To clarify the mechanism underlying ear fullness in otosclerosis, we studied the relationship between clinical features and examinations. Subjects were 116 otosclerosis patients (140 ears). The presence or absence of ear fullness was judged from a questionnaire in initial diagnosis or a chart description. Ear fullness was observed in 44 ears (31%) and absent in 96. The averaged air and bone conduction hearing levels (500 Hz-4 k Hz) in initial diagnosis were significantly lower in the group with ear fullness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of hyperlipidemia in patients suffering from vertigo, and/or tinnitus and/or hearing loss of unknown origin. 48 patients (25 women and 23 men) were included into this study. Porencephalic cyst expanding into the ear is a very rare complication of temporal bone fracture. We report a case of a 20-year-old male who developed a traumatic porencephalic cyst of the temporal lobe expanding into the ear through a tegmen fracture in association with a cholesteatoma. The clinical presentation was otitic meningitis. This occurrence was not encountered in any of the cases reviewed in the literature. The diagnosis, pathogenesis, treatment and prognosis of this condition are reviewed.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the diagnosis and therapeutic effect of the middle ear abnormalities.
METHOD: 65 ears from 1967 to 1996 were reviewed. The degrees of the ossicular abnormalities were analyzed, operative effect were valued.
RESULT: In the 65 ears, incus abnormalities was 57 ears (87.7%), stapes was 55 ears (84.6%), mixed malformation was dominant. 47 ears were operated with ossicular chain reconstruction. 44 ears (93.6%) had hearing improvement, 32 ears (68.1%) had obviously improvement (> 20 dB). OBJECTIVE: To analyse the results and effective factors of middle ear operation in children and juveniles.
METHOD: 105 cases (146 ears) were analyzed retrospectively. 49 ears were followed up over 3 months.
RESULT: 120 ear had perfect hearing materials. The difference of average air-bone gap between postoperation (21.86 +/- 13.15) dB HL and preoperation (35.20 +/- 13.87) dB HL was significant (P < 0.01).

Ear trauma is one of the most important epidemiological factors in causation of deafness. The causation of otologic trauma in eighty three patients is analysed. The triad of pain, hearing loss and tinnitus comprised the most frequent presenting complaints. Physical assault was the most common causation in 49.4% of the cases, road traffic accidents in 19.3% and self-inflicted injury in 15.6%. BACKGROUND: Titanium has been a well established implant material for many years. New material processing techniques now permit the manufacture of small implants for ossicular chain reconstruction.
METHODS: Between November 1994 and September 1995, 100 titanium middle ear implants (55 PORP, 45 TORP) were used for reconstruction of the ossicular chain. A range of five different sizes for partial and total protheses suits all implantation needs. The shape of the implants can be altered by bending.
