A Retrospective Study of Lateral Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve Neuropathy: Electrodiagnostic Findings and Etiologies in 49 Cases.

BACKGROUND: The lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LACN) is the terminal sensory branch of the musculocutaneous nerve and is rarely entrapped or injured. This study describes the electrodiagnostic (EDX) findings and etiologies of LACN neuropathy. METHODS: This is a review of 49 patients with pain and/or paresthesia of the forearm who underwent EDX studies. The diagnosis of LACN neuropathy was based on clinical and sensory conduction abnormalities. RESULTS: The most common etiology of LACN neuropathy was iatrogenic injury in 30 (61.2%) patients, primarily due to biceps tendon repair at the

Traumatic cubitus valgus consequent of distal humeral fracture: Two case studies from the Holocene Later Stone Age in southern Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Distal fractures of the humerus and their complications have rarely been described or analysed in the palaeopathological literat … consequences, raising questions relating to probable care received during the healing process. The elbow injuries would have resulted in restricted motion and instability of the elbow joint, with a high likelihood of ulnar neuropathy. LIMITATIONS: The contextual information for these individuals is limited and do not permit broader population level study. SUG …

Fractures of the elbow and forearm.

Fractures and dislocations of the elbow usually occur secondary to indirect trauma. In the adult, fractures of the distal humerus almost always involve the condyles. Fractures of the radial head and neck may be subtle, and the appearance of secondary signs, such as the elevated fat pads from an elbow joint effusion, may be diagnostically useful. Dislocations of the elbow can be associated with fractures, such as those involving the ulnar coronoid process. In children, the presence of epiphyseal and apophyseal ossification centers can confuse the inexperienced observer in the setting of elbow t

[Imaging of the elbow joint with focus MRI. Part 2: muscles, nerves and synovial membranes].

This review article discusses the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and pathological changes of muscles, nerves and the synovial lining of the elbow joint. Typical imaging findings are illustrated and discussed. In addition, the cross-sectional anatomy and anatomical variants, such as accessory muscles and plicae are discussed. Injuries of the muscles surrounding the elbow joint, as well as chronic irritation are particularly common in athletes. Morphological changes in MRI, for example tennis or golfer's elbow are typical and often groundbreaking. By adapting the examination sequences

Hahn-Steinthal fracture: report of two cases.

Isolated capitellar fractures are rare injuries accounting for only 1% of all elbow fractures. Type I or Hahn-Steinthal fractures require internal fixation to restore the anatomic integrity of the elbow joint. Many different fixation methods have been described and, independently of the method chosen, precise reduction is mandatory to maximize articular congruency and to diminish the potential for secondary osteoarthritis. The treatment and the outcome of two type I capitellar fractures are described in this study. One patient (April 1999) underwent open reduction and Kirschner wire fixation w

Overuse injuries in youth sports.

Although youth sports participation is beneficial on many levels, it is also associated with an increased risk of injury. Risk factors for injury in children and adolescents include the presence of growth cartilage, existence of muscle imbalance, and pressure to compete despite pain and fatigue. Overuse injuries, such as patellofemoral pain, Osgood-Schlatter disease, calcaneal apophysitis, Little League elbow, Little League shoulder, spondylolysis, and osteochondritis dissecans, are common injuries in organized sports. However, proper education, supervision, and training can help reduce the ri

[Traumatic occlusion of the internal carotid artery as an injury sequela of soccer].

The largest number of people engaged in sports in Germany play football. There were about 1.5 million sports injuries annually in the previous Federal Republic of Germany. Steinbrück (5) reported that the highest number was found in football players, in whom the injuries of the legs are most frequent. Head and vascular injuries are unusual and seldom in football players. We report on the case of a patient who received an elbow blow from his opponent. He developed a stroke with hemiparesis because of a traumatic dissection of the A. carotis interna.

Overuse injuries in the young athlete.

Overuse injuries are now well known to sports enthusiasts at any age or level of competition. The seeming explosion of overuse stress fractures of lower extremity bones in high-profile professional basketball players has brought about widespread media attention and a better understanding of the phenomenon of "overuse syndrome" by the public. However, the spectrum of overuse injuries in the child or adolescent athlete has only recently been recognized. These injuries can range from the permanent disability of osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow to the completely nonspecific "growing pains" o

Prospective longitudinal evaluation of elbow motion following pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures.

BACKGROUND: Temporary elbow stiffness after the treatment of a supracondylar humeral fracture in a child is often a concern of parents. However, little attention has been devoted to documenting, longitudinally, the time required for motion recovery. The purpose of the present study was to provide a prospective, longitudinal evaluation of elbow motion in a large population of pediatric patients undergoing treatment of a supracondylar humeral fracture. METHODS: We prospectively examined 373 patients (375 fractures) who presented to our urgent care center between March 1, 2007, and September 30,

Lateral Epicondylitis/Extensor Tendon Injury.

Pain over the lateral aspect of the elbow without nerve injury or elbow instability often is diagnosed as lateral epicondylitis or, colloquially, tennis elbow. It is a common complaint, seen most frequently in women between ages 40 and 60, although it is common in men too. Typical presenting symptoms include pain with prolonged wrist extension activities, pain with resisted wrist or elbow extension, and pain at rest radiating from the elbow along the dorsum of the forearm.

Overuse Injuries In Children and Adolescents.

In brief: Athletic injuries among children often fall into the category of overuse, with mechanisms similar to overuse injuries in adults. However, the implications for young, growing athletes are much different because the growth plates are involved, resulting in such problems as traction apophysitis and Little League elbow. Early, appropriate intervention, which sometimes includes cessation of certain athletic activity, can prevent potential long-term complications in growing athletes.

Care of Water Polo Players.

Water polo is a team sport that combines swimming with overhead throwing and wrestling. This places water polo players at risk for a unique group of illnesses and injuries. In addition to the medical problems and injuries seen in competitive swimmers, water polo players are at risk for a variety of traumatic injuries, including concussions, eye injuries, tympanic membrane perforation, fractures, dislocations, and lacerations. Repetitive overhead throwing also places these athletes at risk for related injuries, such as shoulder problems, including rotator cuff strain and impingement, and elbow

Operative Fixation of the Anteromedial Facet of the Coronoid Process.

Anteromedial coronoid facet fractures typically occur with varus, pronation, and axial forces applied to the elbow. Due in part to the high rate of concomitant lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injuries, untreated anteromedial facet fractures can result in varus and posteromedial rotatory elbow instability. Although small fractures that are not amenable to open reduction and internal fixation can be treated with isolated LCL repair, larger fragments are treated with buttress plating on the anteromedial surface of the coronoid with or without LCL repair. The "over-the-top" approach via a split

A Novel Algorithmic Approach to Chronic Forearm Longitudinal Instability.

Essex-Lopresti Lesions are rare injuries that are often missed in the acute setting. Delayed intervention may lead to chronic wrist and elbow pain and overall poor outcomes. The literature currently supports treatments that involve shortening of the ulna to reduce the relative degree of ulnar impaction, followed by attempted reduction of the distal radioulnar joint. Although such techniques may help to temporarily reduce wrist pain secondary to ulnar impaction, they do not address the proximal migration of the radius and ipsilateral radial head dislocation at the elbow. Subsequent procedures a

Pronator Teres Myotendinous Tear.

Pronator teres muscle strain is a rare sporting injury reported thus far only in cricket and golf players. The injury appears to occur when the sporting club or racket strikes the ground during a forceful swing and causes the elbow to experience an eccentric force during resisted elbow flexion and pronation. On initial presentation, this injury can be mistaken for injury to the medial ulnar collateral ligament, or exacerbation of medial epicondylitis. On examination, bruising and tenderness distal to the elbow over the course of the pronator teres are often present. Advanced imaging confirms t

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of Ankle Joint - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Neglected elbow dislocation is defined as a dislocation that is present for 3 weeks or longer. There is no available literature on neglected elbow dislocations, leading to ankylosis of the elbow joint. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old female sustained a road traffic accident. Anteroposterior and lateral view radiographs of the forearm were done and deemed to be normal at another hospital. Six months after the injury, she presented to us with complaints of absent elbow movements. Examination revealed the elbow to be fixed in 30° of flexion. Radiographs of the elbow revealed an ankylosi

Posterolateral rotatory instability of the elbow.

Since its original description by O'Driscoll in 1991, PLRI is becoming increasingly recognized as a significant cause of elbow pathology. It is well documented that this problem results from an insufficiency of the radial ulnohumeral ligament and its related lateral structures, and that this insufficiency is usually the result of elbow trauma. Diagnosis has improved with the introduction of the PLRI test to identify the instability and advancing MR imaging capabilities of illustrating the injury. Whereas open reconstruction was previously the only definitive treatment, improving arthroscopic t

MR imaging of osteochondral and articular lesions.

MR imaging provides clinically useful information in assessing the elbow joint for osteochondral and articular lesions. Post-traumatic osseous abnormalities well seen by MR imaging include radiographically occult fractures, stress fractures, bone contusions, osteochondritis dissecans, and chondral defects. Intraarticular loose bodies can be identified with MR imaging, especially if fluid or contrast material are present within the elbow joint. MR imaging can also provide additional information regarding synovial osteochondritis, osteoarthritis, and bursitis about the elbow.
