Virtual reality social cognition training for young adults with high-functioning autism.

Few evidence-based social interventions exist for young adults with high-functioning autism, many of whom encounter significant challenges during the transition into adulthood. The current study investigated the feasibility of an engaging Virtual Reality Social Cognition Training intervention focused on enhancing social skills, social cognition, and social functioning. Eight young adults diagnosed with high-functioning autism completed 10 sessions across 5 weeks. Significant increases on social cognitive measures of theory of mind and emotion recognition, as well as in real life social and occ

Progress of microneedle patches in analgesic management.

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Acute or chronic pain not only impairs quality of life but also triggers a series of psychological problems. Currently, pain management mainly relies on intravenous injection and oral medication, while effective, precise pain management approaches remain lacking. As a novel transdermal drug delivery system, microneedle patches have effectively overcome the limitations of traditional analgesic methods (such as oral and injectable administration), including low bioavailability and poor patie

[The performance of children with AD(H)D according to the HAWIK-IV].

The focus of the present study were performances of N = 433 children and adolescents with AD(H)D on the German version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children (HAWIK-IV). Furthermore, we investigated whether test results depend on comorbid disorders based on subgroups (n = 212, n = 262, n = 217) composed by excluding individuals based on comorbidities on either (a) the first, (b) the second, and (c) the first and the second axis of the multiaxial classification scheme for mental disorders in childhood and adolescents. The specificity of the AD(H)D profile was investigated by comparing

Mood changes during the internship.

A prospective study using two standardized psychological tests, the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), was conducted in an effort to quantify the emotional changes experienced by internal medicine house staff members during the internship. In contrast to instruments used in previous investigations of this type, the POMS and the SDS are standardized tests with proven reliability and validity. The six mood factors measured, "tension-anxiety," "depression-dejection," "anger-hostility," "vigor-activity," "fatigue-inertia," and "confusion-bewilderment," are re

Navigating self-injury in a digital world: adolescents' perspectives on coping, help-seeking, and technology.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), hereafter referred to as self-injury, is common among adolescents and is associated with elevated risk for suicide attempts and other adverse mental health outcomes. Because most adolescents who self-injure do not receive formal treatment, accessible alternatives are needed. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) may offer an accessible and scalable means of support. While previous research has examined DMHIs for youth, less is known about how adolescents who engage in self-injury understand their experiences and use digital technologies, includ

Neuropsychological attention skills and related behaviours in adults with tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder associated with mTOR over-activation and disruption of MAPK, PI3K and AMPK signalling. Children with TSC have significant deficits on neuropsychological attention tasks, particularly dual tasking. Here we investigated attentional skills and related behaviours in daily life in normally intelligent adults with TSC and matched controls using the Test of Everyday Attention for Children (TEA-Ch) and the Attention-Deficit Scales for Adults (ADSA). No group differences were demonstrated on selective or sustained attention tasks carried out alone.

Effect of walnut consumption on neuropsychological development in healthy adolescents: a multi-school randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Omega-3 fatty acids are critical for neuropsychological functioning. Adolescence is increasingly believed to entail brain vulnerability to dietary intake. The potential benefit on adolescent neurodevelopment of consuming walnuts, a source of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a 6-month multi-school-based randomised controlled nutrition intervention trial to assess whether walnut consumption has beneficial effects on the neuropsychological and behavioural development of adolescents. The study took place between 04/01/2016 and 06/30/2017 in tw

Understanding Digital Dementia and Cognitive Impact in the Current Era of the Internet: A Review.

Dementia encompasses symptoms resulting from brain damage that impairs cognitive functions, surpassing natural aging effects. This condition affects emotional regulation, behavior, and motivation while preserving consciousness. Dr. Manfred Spitzer coined the term 'digital dementia,' highlighting the cognitive decline associated with excessive reliance on digital devices such as smartphones and Google, potentially exacerbating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and memory loss. This condition mirrors terms like 'digital amnesia' and 'the Google Effect,' highlighting the brain's ten

The Reciprocal Influence of Callous-Unemotional Traits, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Parenting Practices in Preschoolers.

The present study investigates reciprocal associations between positive parenting, parental monitoring, CU traits, and ODD in children assessed at age 3 and again at age 6. Data were collected from a sample of preschoolers (N = 419; 51.58 % female) through diagnostic interviews and questionnaires answered by parents and teachers. Structural equation modeling revealed a bidirectional relationship between poor monitoring and ODD, with poor monitoring at age 3 predicting ODD at age 6 (β = 0.11, p < 0.05), and ODD at age 3 predicting poor monitoring at age 6 (β = 0.10, p < 0.05). Randomized trial of parent training to prevent adolescent problem behaviors during the high school transition.

This randomized controlled trial tested a widely used general parent training program, Common Sense Parenting (CSP), with low-income 8th graders and their families to support a positive transition to high school. The program was tested in its original 6-session format and in a modified format (CSP-Plus), which added 2 sessions that included adolescents. Over 2 annual cohorts, 321 families were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the CSP, CSP-Plus, or minimal-contact control condition. Pretest, posttest, 1-year follow-up, and 2-year follow-up survey data on parenting as well as youth schoo

Social skills and psychopathic traits in maltreated adolescents.

Child maltreatment has frequently been associated with impaired social skills and antisocial features, but there are still controversies about the effect of each type of maltreatment on social behaviour. The aim of this study was to compare the social functioning and psychopathic traits of maltreated adolescents (MTA) with a control group (CG) and to investigate what types of maltreatments and social skills were associated with psychopathic traits in both groups. The types and intensity of maltreatment were evaluated through the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) in 107 adolescents, divided

Social anxiety and emotion regulation in daily life: spillover effects on positive and negative social events.

To minimize the possibility of scrutiny, people with social anxiety difficulties exert great effort to manage their emotions, particularly during social interactions. We examined how the use of two emotion regulation strategies, emotion suppression and cognitive reappraisal, predict the generation of emotions and social events in daily life. Over 14 consecutive days, 89 participants completed daily diary entries on emotions, positive and negative social events, and their regulation of emotions. Using multilevel modeling, we found that when people high in social anxiety relied more on positive

Emotion perception in Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism: the importance of diagnostic criteria and cue intensity.

This study compared emotion perception accuracy between children with Asperger's syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA). Thirty children were diagnosed with AS or HFA based on empirically supported diagnostic criteria and administered an emotion perception test consisting of facial expressions and tone of voice cues that varied in intensity. Participants with AS and the typically developing standardization sample of the emotion perception instrument had the same mean emotion perception accuracy, whereas participants with HFA performed significantly worse. Results also provided prelimi

Decoding of emotion through facial expression, prosody and verbal content in children and adolescents with Asperger's syndrome.

This study examined differences in the ability to decode emotion through facial expression, prosody, and verbal content between 14 children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and 16 typically developing peers. The ability to decode emotion was measured by the Perception of Emotion Test (POET), which portrayed the emotions of happy, angry, sad, and neutral among the modalities of static and dynamic facial expression, prosody, verbal content, and all modalities combined. Results revealed that children with AS had more difficulty identifying emotions through static facial expression, dynamic facial ex
