Research on expressed emotion in the families of schizophrenic patients has seemed to offer a new perspective on environmental factors that cause relapse in schizophrenia. A review of the literature, however, reveals that while expressed emotion may predict relapse, there is no evidence that it causes relapse. Nor does the evidence support the continued linkage of the three components of expressed emotion--criticism, hostility, and emotional overinvolvement--in a single global variable. The authors also question the clinical significance of expressed emotion ratings and believe that treatment

During the third largest outbreak of botulism reported in the United States, affective responses of patients and their family members were assessed to monitor and compare the emotional distress experienced by the two groups during the initial, acute phase of the life-threatening illness. Ratings of 12 patients and 16 family members indicated that family members were significantly more fearful and depressed than patients during the first week and as fearful and depressed as patients during the second week of hospitalization/treatment. Anxiety and helplessness decreased significantly in both gro

A 41-yr-old psychologically disturbed woman presented with attacks of paroxystic dyspnea, laborious expiration, cough, and expiratory wheezing. She had been treated for bronchial asthma and had developed an iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome. Wheezing had maximal intensity over the larynx, and fiberoptic bronchoscopy showed an almost closed glottis orifice during its production. Lung function tests were normal both before and during the attacks. Inhalation challenge tests with acetylcholine and histamine were negative. During the attacks the patient breathed near residual volume, and tidal flows re

The validity of a diagnostic classification scheme for the emotional adjustment reactions of children is tested, and empirical findings are offered in support of a descriptive approach to classification. Results validate clinical observations of four types of children commonly seen for emotional adjustment reactions. Further research is proposed to develop instruments for personality assessment that would be sensitive to these categories.

Previous reports on survivors of Reye's syndrome have indicated a high proportion of significant neurological and intellectual sequelae. However, increasingly sophisticated monitoring and therapeutic techniques have diminished both the mortality and morbidity of this disease. Our present study documented the relatively good intellectual and neurological prognosis for recent survivors of Reye's at our institution and explored the emotional impact of this illness on survivor's families. The significant emotional problems of the children and their families were in striking contrast to the relativ

Emphasis on the process and content of the emotional aspects of rehabilitation are presented as a process interwoven with a patient's physical rehabilitation. The impact of trauma and subsequent rehabilitation involves for patients the resolution of these stages: shock, denial, depressive reaction, reaction against independence, and adaptation. Factors which facilitate and impede the negotiation of these steps on both the part of the patient and attending staff are examined from the prospective of the psychiatrist as a member of the medical rehabilitation team.

On the basis of ten clinical cases of post emotional shock, the following aspects are discussed: the causal emotion and its characteristics, its psychological repercussions and the mechanisms involvent, the clinical patterns observed, both somatic and psychic, and their interpretation. Attention is called to the consequences of such emotions from the forensic view-point and the need to ascertain and specify the nature and intensity of the emotional trauma and the actual state of anxiety. Emphasis is laid on the difficulty of making expert appraisals and fixing equitable compensations, as exper…

Making judgments of learning (JOLs) can directly modify future memory, which is termed JOL reactivity. Recently, JOLs were found to produce positive reactivity for negative faces but not for positive faces. The finding was interpreted as support for the changed-goal hypothesis, which posits that making JOLs highlights item differences in learning difficulty, thereby prompting people to become more performance-oriented and to focus more on items perceived as easier (e.g., negative faces) at the cost of items perceived as harder (e.g., positive faces). While face emotion was manipulated in a mix

Negotiation is integral to social life. Whether we focus on exchanges between individuals, groups, organizations, or nations, negotiation is the most common and constructive way of making deals and solving disputes. Negotiations can spark intense emotions, which in turn shape negotiation processes and outcomes. Here, we review research on the social consequences of emotional expressions in negotiation. We summarize evidence regarding specific single emotions (e.g., anger, happiness, disappointment, sadness, fear, guilt, shame, pride, hope) as well as alternative (patterns of) emotional respons…

Emotion regulation is a multifaceted process essential to mental health. This review synthesizes established theoretical models within an integrative framework of emotion regulation that links individual regulatory abilities with the dynamic processes through which emotions are modulated. It outlines how these abilities develop through the interplay of biological predispositions and environmental factors, learning processes, and beliefs about emotion and highlights how regulatory abilities and process-level dynamics interact within a feedback-sensitive system. Repeated failures in this system,…
