The Dynamic Nature of the Socioeconomic Determinants of Cardiovascular Health: A Narrative Review.

Despite decades of social epidemiologic research, health inequities remain pervasive and ubiquitous in Canada and elsewhere. One reason may be our use of socioeconomic measurement, which has often relied on single point-in-time exposures. To explore the extent to which researchers have incorporated dynamic socioeconomic measurement into cardiovascular health outcome evaluations, we performed a narrative review. We estimated the prevalence of socioeconomic longitudinal cardiovascular research studies that identified socioeconomic exposures at 2 or more points in time between the years of 2019 a

Nor Any Drop to Drink: Creating a Community-Based Assessment Tool to Address 1,4-Dioxane Water Contamination.

OBJECTIVE: 1,4-Dioxane (DX), a synthetic organic chemical solvent prevalent in water systems, has been monitored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a possible carcinogen since 2013. Delegation of risk tolerance levels to states has resulted in varying exposure standards across the U.S., concerning DX-impacted communities. This study employed a community-based participatory research (CBPR) to design a survey that identifies DX-impacted communities' concerns and preferred risk management strategies. METHODS: CBPR survey design drew on descriptions of two DX-impacted communitie

Psychological trauma symptom improvement in veterans using emotional freedom techniques: a randomized controlled trial.

This study examined the effect of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), a brief exposure therapy combining cognitive and somatic elements, on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychological distress symptoms in veterans receiving mental health services. Veterans meeting the clinical criteria for PTSD were randomized to EFT (n = 30) or standard of care wait list (SOC/WL; n = 29). The EFT intervention consisted of 6-hour-long EFT coaching sessions concurrent with standard care. The SOC/WL and EFT groups were compared before and after the intervention (at 1 month for the SOC/WL group and aft

Age, gender and diabetic status are associated with effects of bone marrow cell therapy on recovery of left ventricular function after acute myocardial infarction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Clinical studies on intracoronary bone marrow cell (BMCs) infusion in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) revealed mixed results. Recently, meta-analysis on this topic have been conducted and found that there was marked heterogeneity between trials. The objective of this systematic review is to have a retrospection of the efficacy of cell therapy and explore whether the study design or characteristics of subjects may have influenced the effects of cell therapy on recovery of left ventricular function after AMI. Trials were identified in ClinicalTrial, mRCT, Cochrane Library, EMBASE

Differential recall bias and spurious associations in case/control studies.

Consider a case/control study designed to investigate a possible association between exposure to a putative risk factor and development of a particular disease. Let E denote the information required to specify a subject's exposure to the risk factor. We examine the effect that errors in the recorded values of E (which we denote by E*) have on inferences of an association between disease and the risk factor. We concentrate on situations where the errors in recorded exposure are such that exposure is underestimated for controls and overestimated for cases. This phenomenon is referred to as diffe

Mothers and Babies Virtual Group (MBVG) for perinatal Latina women: study protocol for a hybrid type-1 effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Immigrant Latinas (who are foreign-born but now reside in the USA) are at greater risk for developing postpartum depression than the general perinatal population, but many face barriers to treatment. To address these barriers, we adapted the Mothers and Babies Course-an evidence-based intervention for postpartum depression prevention-to a virtual group format. Additional adaptations are inclusion of tailored supplemental child health content and nutrition benefit assistance. We are partnering with Early Learning Centers (ELC) across the state of Maryland to deliver and test the ada

Implementation research of a cluster randomized trial evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of intermittent preventive treatment for malaria using dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine on reducing malaria burden in school-aged children in Tanzania: methodology, challenges, and mitigation.

BACKGROUND: It has been more than 20 years since the malaria epidemiologic shift to school-aged children was noted. In the meantime, school-aged children (5-15 years) have become increasingly more vulnerable with asymptomatic malaria prevalence reaching up to 70%, making them reservoirs for subsequent transmission of malaria in the endemic communities. Intermittent Preventive Treatment of malaria in schoolchildren (IPTsc) has proven to be an effective tool to shrink this reservoir. As of 3rd June 2022, the World Health Organization recommends IPTsc in moderate and high endemic areas. Even so,

The Dialogic Health Systems Research Framework (DHSRF): A tool for facilitating self-criticality, researcher interactions and knowledge management in Health Systems Research & Policy Studies.

Health Systems Research (HSR) has witnessed significant progress in theory, methodology and practice over the last two decades. The complexity of health systems has allowed for diverse lenses for HSR. However, given the absence of dialogue between the different streams of HSR, the diversity of this field, perhaps its greatest strength, is turning out to be quite the challenge. Without a common language that enables researcher interaction and critical examination of the field, diversity can easily turn into a din. To overcome this confusion, evidence-based policy making requires tools that can

The anatomy of a forbidden desire: men, penetration and semen exchange.

The rising popularity of unprotected anal sex (bareback sex) among men who have sex with men (MSM) is perplexing healthcare providers working in sexual health clinics. Epidemiological research on the topic overlooks several socio-cultural and psychological dimensions. Our research attempts to construct an appropriate theoretical edifice by which we can understand this sexual practice. In order to achieve this objective, a qualitative design was selected and 18 semiconductive in-depth interviews were carried out with barebackers from five European and North American cities. We then analyzed the

A comprehensive overview of the burden, prevention, and therapeutic aspects of arboviral diseases in India.

Outbreaks of arboviruses have become one of the major and consistent health burdens in India. With no effective vaccines or antivirals, it is challenging to control the exponential increase in cases of arboviral diseases. Accurate assessment of cases, timely and accurate diagnosis, treatment, tracking fatalities, surveillance of vectors, adopting integrated vector management policies, real-time genomic surveillance, and relating these to symptoms and tracking transmission are essential for keeping the emergence of arboviruses in check. This comprehensive review explores current literature and
