This reports presents a case of malignant chemodectoma in the epiglottic region of a 47-year-old man. His initial complaint was laryngeal discomfort and he expired from generalized metastases of the tumor about one year after operation. The tumor was detected by laryngoscopy and laryngogram. The yellow parenchymatous tumor, 2.8 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm in size, was resected together with two enlarged regional lymph nodes. The mass was subjected to a histopathological study and biochemical assay. The value of quantitatively determined C-reactive protein (CRP), measured from a finger prick sample for rapid detection of septicemia, was examined in 76 blood culture-positive infections in 54 immunocompetent and 18 compromised children; 73 patients with systemic viral infections served as controls. Seven patients presented to our swallowing center with solid food dysphagia. The age range at presentation was 69 to 90 years. A search was made in The National Board Hospital Register of all admissions to Danish hospitals caused by ingestion of corrosives or suspected ingestion of corrosives during 1984-1988 among children aged 0-14 years. Sonography was compared with operative and histological results in 42 patients with advanced laryngeal cancer. Sonography was accurate in the imaging of supraglottic tumours.
