Hip pathology in the pediatric patient can be very challenging to diagnose, as there are many diagnoses that must be considered by the clinician. Categorizing children by age can aid in the process of making an early diagnosis, which is especially important when it comes to serious pediatric hip conditions such as septic arthritis, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease and slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

PURPOSE: Past epidemiological studies demonstrated a nearly fivefold lower incidence of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) in New Mexico compared with Connecticut. A recent study demonstrated some regional variability but did not address this earlier finding. We sought to reexamine the incidence of SCFE in New Mexico to improve the understanding of the epidemiology and ultimately the disorder itself.
METHODS: The discharge databases for the 11 major medical centers in the state were reviewed for the ICD-9 code for SCFE (732.2) for 1995 to 2006. The data were analyzed by comparison with

Delay in diagnosis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis has important implications with regard to slip severity and long-term hip outcomes. The aims of this review were to identify the incidence of delayed diagnosis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in the hospital to which the authors are affiliated, and the causes for such delays. A retrospective review was conducted of all patients admitted to the Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide between January 1997 and October 2004 with a diagnosis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The inpatient and outpatient medical records for each pa

The authors report their experience with eight patients (11 hips) with Down syndrome who sustained a slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Six patients were diagnosed with hypothyroidism. All patients were greater than the 85th percentile for body mass index. Initial treatment was by in situ pinning in all hips. Six of the 11 slips progressed, 2 had collapse consistent with avascular necrosis, and 1 developed collapse secondary to joint sepsis and osteomyelitis. Additional surgery was necessary on seven hips. Four of eight hips followed until maturity had substantial femoral head deformity

The gold standard in the therapy of SCFE is the bilateral procedure in Central Europe. Several statistics demonstrate more than 30% of bilateral slippage as an average. Complications such as accidental pin perforation have become rare since the introduction of large cannulated screws. The advantage of screws as an implant is the easier removal of the device after termination of growth. Exceptionally, only the involved site may be operated on when cessation of growth is to be expected immediately. Because the disease takes place in the growing area of the femur, leg length differences up to 2 c

Two patients had displaced femoral neck fractures at the bone-screw interface after in situ fixation of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Both fractures required closed reduction and internal fixation. Inadvertent derotation of the femur occurred in both patients and allowed fixation of the fracture through the intramedullary canal of the femoral neck without anterior penetration of the pins into the joint; a nonunion occurred in this patient. The other patient developed chondrolysis and avascular necrosis. Because the femoral neck is vulnerable to stress fractures in young adults, there is s

Extracapsular base of femoral neck osteotomy was performed in 36 hips with moderate to severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Follow-up ranged from 2 to 24 years (average 9 years). According to modified Southwick's criteria, 90% of the hips had excellent or good result. There were no cases of avascular necrosis (AVN). Prevention of permanent limb-length discrepancy > 15 mm, as occurs in unilateral cases, warrants close follow-up and contralateral epiphysiodesis when necessary. We highly recommend this osteotomy as a safe and effective way to prevent further slippage and improve hip r

The authors review 26 patients who underwent either "in situ" extracapsular epiphysiodesis or intracapsular reduction followed by epiphysiodesis for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). A total of 32 operations were performed. In the first group (chronic grade II SCFE), no complications occurred in the 16 operations and the results were excellent in all cases. In the second group (chronic grade II and III SCFE and acute-on-chronic SCFE), in 16 operations we observed four cases of avascular necrosis, two of which accompanied by chondrolysis. Three of these were in cases of acute-on-chronic

In 15 boys and eight girls with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), height, weight, body proportions, and skeletal and sexual maturation were assessed prospectively. A significant preponderance of relatively long legs was found in boys and girls and of relatively high body weights in boys; otherwise, growth and maturation were not different from those of normal children. The time of occurrence of SCFE was most closely related to bone age and the peak of the growth spurt. If one considers growth and maturation the most sensitive indicators of a well-functioning endocrine system, there is

Three cases of valgus slippage of the distal tibial and fibular epiphysis that masqueraded as severe idiopathic flatfoot are described. These occurred in patients with renal osteodystrophy and were treated by osteotomies of the reverse dome type without internal fixation. All the osteotomies healed well.

To evaluate if the immune system is active in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) or chondrolysis, 16 patients with SCFE were studied by evaluation of their serum immunoglobulins, histology of their synovium, and immunofluorescent staining of their synovium. Patients with Perthes' disease, chondromalacia patellae, septic arthritis, sickle cell disease, and torn meniscus were controls. Serum immunoglobulins were normal in all patients. The histology demonstrated synovitis in all patients except in one normal knee. Plasma cells were a prominent feature of the synovitis in the patients with

OBJECTIVES: Slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFE) is a common pediatric hip disease with the risk of osteoarthritis and impingement deformities, and 3D models could be useful for patient-specific analysis. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) bone segmentation and feasibility of 3D printing and of 3D ROM simulation using MRI-based 3D models were investigated.
METHODS: A retrospective study involving 22 symptomatic patients (22 hips) with SCFE was performed. All patients underwent preoperative hip MR with pelvic coronal high-resolution images (T1 images). Slice thickness was 0.8-1.2

A slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE) is the most common disease of the hip among adolescents. In the light of our current knowledge on the development of coxarthrosis, it represents a first line model case that has led to a series of novel ideas in the therapy for SUFE. The development of coxarthrosis from a cam impingement, i.e., the loss of offset of the neck of the femur and degenerative damage to the acetabular lip as its early form, is seen again in the clinical picture of slipped upper femoral epiphysis. Depending on the degree of slippage, we see a varying severity of the loss of of

Hip pain in athletes involves a wide differential diagnosis. Adolescents and young adults are at particular risk for various apophyseal and epiphyseal injuries due to lack of ossification of these cartilaginous growth plates. Older athletes are more likely to present with tendinitis in these areas because their growth plates have closed. Several bursae in the hip area are prone to inflammation. The trochanteric bursa is the most commonly injured, and the lesion is easily identified by palpation of the area. Iliotibial band syndrome presents with similar lateral hip pain and may be identified b

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common hip disorder in adolescents that can result in substantial complications, impacting the quality of life. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) administration may elevate the risk of SCFE, though the relationship remains unclear. Clarifying this association could enable better monitoring and earlier diagnosis of SCFE in patients receiving HGH. The aim of the study is to investigate the association between HGH administration and the incidence of SCFE.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized data from the TriNetX research database f

While the usual etiology of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is idiopathic, there are many other factors that increase the predisposition to slippage. Chemotherapy can be one of them. In this article, we report a rare case of acute SCFE after tumor prosthesis implantation in a patient who received chemotherapy. A 10-year-old girl with osteosarcoma of the right distal femur underwent (neo-) adjuvant chemotherapy, wide tumor resection, and reconstruction using a growing tumor prosthesis and a short non-cemented femoral stem. Half a year after implantation, she developed aseptic loosening
