Epidemiology of a large restaurant-associated outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O111:NM.

In August 2008, a large outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O111:NM infections associated with a buffet-style restaurant in rural Oklahoma was identified. A case-control study of restaurant patrons and a retrospective cohort study of catered event attendees were conducted coupled with an environmental investigation to determine the outbreak's source and mode of transmission. Of 1823 persons interviewed, 341 (18·7%) met the outbreak case definition; 70 (20·5%) were hospitalized, 25 (7·3%) developed haemolytic uraemic syndrome, and one died. Multiple food items were signifi

Molecular aspects of milk allergens and their role in clinical events.

Milk allergy is the most frequent food allergy in childhood. Even though cases of newly developed milk allergy in adulthood are known, this allergy is less frequent in adults since it is normally outgrown by children during the first years of life. One of the reasons why allergy to cow's milk shows its highest prevalence in children is its early introduction into the diets of babies when breast feeding is not possible. The major allergens are caseins and beta-lactoglobulin, but allergies to other minor proteins (immunoglobulins, bovine serum albumin) have also been reported. Milk allergenicity

[A new complex approaches for the identification of Listeria isolated during production of fermented sausages].

Distribution L. monocytogenes and other Listeria spp. in raw meat and during manufacturing of fermented meat products is investigated. The high contamination of raw materials and semi finished foods--in 36.5% of samples, ready-to-eat sausages--31.8% by Listeria spp. is established. Detection L. monocytogenes in 9.7% cases from the surfaces of equipment indicates the intensive circulation of listeriosis agents on meat plants. For identification 49 isolated strains the approach providing application of most informative for L. monocytogenes phenotypical tests (mobility, ability to haemolysis, pre

[HIV infection in the operating room conditions].

Several cases of occupational HIV transmission during surgical procedures have been reported all over the world in the last few years. Orthopaedic surgeons are at particularly high risk for blood contamination and skin injuries. This article addresses the risk of HIV transmission in the surgical setting with a focus on specific risk factors: the prevalence of the infection in general population, the stage of the disease, virulence, inoculum size, the nature and frequency of blood contacts. It also shows how the last two factors depend on surgical specialty, duration and kind of the procedure,

Subtotal colectomy with surgical stapling instruments via a trans-cecal approach for treatment of acquired megacolon in cats.

Surgical stapling equipment was used to perform an end-to-end colonic anastomosis in 15 cats for the treatment of acquired megacolon. An end-to-end stapling device was passed to the anastomotic site by a trans-cecal approach. Subsequent closure of the cecal incision was accomplished with a thoracoabdominal stapling device. Two cats had hemorrhagic episodes immediately after surgery that required blood transfusions. All 15 cats have had good to excellent health after subtotal colectomy and colocolostomy performed using this stapling technique. Results of this study have demonstrated that "singl

Prevention of infection in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is an extremely important therapy widely used for nutritional support of many hospitalized patients with complicated medical and surgical problems. One of the most significant complications of TPN therapy however is sepsis. Catheter-associated sepsis is the most frequent infectious complication, although intrinsic or extrinsic contamination of TPN fluid or administration sets or local catheter site infection also occur. Most of the infectious complications of TPN therapy can be prevented with meticulous attention to aseptic technique. An organized team approach

[Pacemaker infection in fragile patients].

Complications associated with cardiac implantable electric devices (CIED) are manifold. They include lead dislocation, twiddler's syndrome, device malfunction, haematoma formation and infection. Infections can be divided into acute, subacute and late infections. Both the time of onset and the route of infection play a crucial role. The consequences of a CIED infection are devastating. The most modern treatment methods include the removal of all implanted implants. If complete removal is not followed in the event of infection, there is a high rate of infection recurrence. DNAzyme-Based Core-Shell Hydrogel Microneedle Arrays for In Situ Live Bacterial Detection on Surfaces.

Surface bacterial contamination poses significant risks to public health and food safety, yet conventional detection methods often require complex sample processing and laboratory equipment. Here, we report simple and sensitive DNAzyme-based core-shell hydrogel microneedle arrays (DzCS-HMA) for in situ live bacterial detection on surfaces. DzCS-HMA combines a lysozyme-loaded pullulan shell for on-site live bacterial lysis and a DNAzyme-embedded hydrogel core for bacterial recognition, enabling a straightforward three-step detection process (i.e., surface wetting, microneedle application, and f

Scott test paper: A solvent-free, portable presumptive method for cocaine detection in field forensic applications.

Presumptive colorimetric tests are widely used in forensic field investigations. However, the conventional liquid Scott test has important operational drawbacks for patrol officers, including limited portability, higher costs, user exposure to hazardous chemicals, and the generation of chemical waste. In this context, this study aimed to develop a Scott test paper (STP) by immobilizing a cobalt thiocyanate reagent in glycerin onto a paper matrix. Evaluation with authentic street cocaine samples showed a limit of detection (LOD) of 4 mg·mL⁻¹ and 100% agreement with the conventional Scott test.

A Case Report of Pasteurella multocida Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis: Your Pet Cat May Be a Source of Disease!

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus commonly found in the oropharyngeal flora of various animals, including domestic pets such as cats and dogs. Transmission of Pasteurella to humans usually occurs through close contact and can cause soft tissue infections, pneumonia, peritonitis, and meningitis. CASE REPORT: We present a case of peritonitis in a 52-year-old male patient who had been undergoing home peritoneal dialysis for four years due to chronic renal failure. Peritoneal fluid culture identified the causative agent as P. multocida using matrix-assisted laser

Femoral artery ligature for treatment of infected groin pseudoaneurysm in injected drug abusers.

Drug addiction is a major social and medical concern. Infected groin pseudoaneurysm (IGP) is the result of direct arterial needlestick injury associated with contamination of the arterial wall or peri-arterial area by the injection equipment. Femoral artery (FA) ligation with extensive debridement is an alternative to direct revascularization in an area of sepsis. In case of femoral bifurcation free of infection or in case of isolated FA below the femoral artery of thigh involvement, a simple ligation of the FA is performed. Ligation of each femoral vessel is indicated in case of extension of

Photocatalytic Treatments for Personal Protective Equipment: Experimental Microbiological Investigations and Perspectives for the Enhancement of Antimicrobial Activity by Micrometric TiO2.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to countries enforcing the use of facial masks to prevent contagion. However, acquisition, reuse, and disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE) has generated problems, in regard to the safety of individuals and environmental sustainability. Effective strategies to reprocess and disinfect PPE are needed to improve the efficacy and durability of this equipment and to reduce waste load. Thus, the addition of photocatalytic materials to these materials, combined with light exposure at specific wavelengths, may represent promising solutions. To this aim, we prepa

Rapid detection of urinary tract infection by analyzing the dried spots of biological fluids using convolutional neural networks.

To find the cause of infectious diseases such as urinary tract infections, a the diagnostic patterning test was used. In this method, the whole blood and serum samples for every person were dried on a glass substrate to create a special pattern due to formation of central and peripheral regions. This process was performed during 1 h at 25 °C which is much shorter than the classical and instrumental methods. The resulting patterns can be observed by an optical microscope. The study aimed to classify the UTI patients and healthy controls (N=600). In addition, the images of dried patterns were ca

How gaps in regulation of compounding pharmacy set the stage for a multistate fungal meningitis outbreak.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the regulation issues surrounding compounding pharmacy that allowed the United States fungal meningitis outbreak to occur and the changes in regulation that ensued. SUMMARY: In September 2012, a single case report sparked an investigation into a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis due to contaminated injectable drugs. The source of the contamination, New England Compounding Center (NECC), was in violation of several state and federal laws and had a history of such violations. The regulation of compounding pharmacies has historically been left to the s
