A Guideline for Parkinson's Disease Nurse Specialists, with Recommendations for Clinical Practice.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease Nurse Specialists (PDNS) play an important role in the care for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their caregivers. Until now, there were no nursing guidelines in PD, and interventions were based solely on daily clinical practice because there is no evidence to support the merits of nursing interventions. Consequently, there is little uniformity in current care delivery. OBJECTIVE: Developing a guideline for PDNS. METHODS: We developed a guideline based on a questionnaire among PDNS and a literature review, supplemented with expert opinion plus the in

Nurses' perceptions of an audiovisual material to support patient education on oral health management in diabetes care.

Educational support for nurses is essential to promote oral health management education for patients with diabetes. However, few studies have focused on supporting nurses in this context. This study explored the effects of an audiovisual material designed to support nurses' patient education on oral health management in diabetes care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight certified diabetes nurse educators. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Four main themes emerged: (1) enhancement of nurses' individual learning (8/8 participants), including improved knowledge of the co

Misoprostol in Spontaneous Abortion: Why Nurses Must Lead the Conversation.

The pharmacologic management of spontaneous abortion with misoprostol is a clinically essential, evidence-based intervention. However, the conflation of "spontaneous abortion" and "medically induced abortion" in political discourse, lay media, and emerging legislation threatens access to this medication for persons experiencing pregnancy loss. Failure to correct this conflation risks regulatory and prescribing barriers that could result in serious maternal harm, including retained products of conception leading to hemorrhage and sepsis. Nurses, positioned at the front line of reproductive and

Impact of a structured educational intervention on the prevention of ocular surface disorders in critically ill patients: A non-randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular surface disorders (OSDs) are common in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, with incidence rates ranging from 13.2% to 59.4%. Risk factors include impaired eyelid closure, reduced blink reflexes, and systemic inflammation, exacerbated by sedation and mechanical ventilation. Despite these risks, ICU nurses often lack standardized ocular care training, leading to inconsistent practices and suboptimal patient outcomes. AIM: To evaluate the impact of a structured educational intervention on ICU nurses' regarding ocular care in critically ill patients. METHOD: A non-randomized

The nursing home as a hub: boundary work as a key to community health promotion.

This article considers ways in which a nursing home can come to serve as a hub for community health promotion. Inspired by the term 'boundary crossing' (Akkerman and Bakker. Boundary crossing and boundary objects. Rev Educ Res 2011;81:132-69), we suggest the notion of 'boundary work' to illustrate how a nursing home arranges community activities and includes a wide range of participants. In health research, a 'hub' refers to a space in which activities and expertise are 'bound together' over time. The concept of the hub indicates that health organizations have the power to become centres for h

Beyond "what works": Realist evaluation as a transformative approach to building evidence in nurse education.

The persistent "what works" question in nurse education research conceals a conceptual trap. We seek universal interventions that reliably produce outcomes regardless of context, building an evidence base where promising interventions repeatedly fail to transfer across settings. Critical realism and its methodological offspring, realist evaluation, offers a transformative alternative from the social sciences. Rather than asking "does this work," realist evaluation asks: for whom, in what circumstances, through what mechanisms, producing which outcomes? This Big Ideas paper introduces the Conte

Technical Rationality Under Pressure: Nursing Leadership and Clinical Governance in Politically Volatile Health-Care Settings.

Clinical protocols are commonly framed as technical instruments for standardizing care and improving patient safety. Their implementation in practice, however, depends not only on the strength of the evidence that underpins them, but also on the organizational and political conditions that enable their continuity over time. In health-care settings characterized by administrative instability, political interference, patronage-based appointments, and high workforce turnover, adherence to protocols becomes especially fragile. This practice-based analysis examines how such conditions affect clinic

Correlates of disruptive behaviors in nursing homes. A reanalysis.

This study reexamines factors associated with the occurrence of disruptive behaviors using a representative sample of nursing home residents in Rhode Island in 1984-1985. Four indicators of disruptive behaviors are examined using multivariate methods: evidence of any disruptive behaviors, abusive behavior, wandering, and noisiness. Results are compared with the 1989 study by Jackson et al., which was based on the same data. Findings indicate that the likelihood of exhibiting disruptive behaviors in nursing homes increases with the severity of cognitive impairment, ADL dysfunction, and incontin
