Effect of 2 weeks rest-pause on oxidative stress and inflammation in female basketball players.

Intense exercise leads to increased production of free radicals, resulting in an inflammatory response in athletes. For this reason, it was decided to investigate whether a single intensive exercise until exhaustion applied after a 2-week rest period would result in a violation of the pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance. Twenty-seven trained female basketball players (age: 16.55 ± 0.96 years, body mass: 66.40 ± 13.68 kg, height: 173.45 ± 5.14 cm) were enrolled to the study following the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Study was conducted at the end of the competitive training phas

Factors Associated with the Uncoupling of Perceived and Achieved Exercise Capacity in Patients Undergoing Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing.

An objective of the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) is to standardize assessments of exertional intolerance. However, patient factors associated with inaccurate assessments of exercise capacity with this tool are not well described. Patients who completed the DASI in preparation for a treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) at our institution from 2022 to 2023 were analyzed. Metabolic equivalents of task (METs) were calculated from the DASI score and measured from CPET. Clinical characteristics were compared using Chi square or Mann-Whitney U tests between those who overestimated vers

[Ten questions about cardiopulmonary exercise testing: all that the cardiologist dares or dares not to ask].

In patients with cardiovascular, pulmonary, muscular and neurological diseases, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a valuable tool providing clinically-relevant diagnostic and prognostic information by evaluation of exercise response. CPET requires to be performed in dedicated centers able to correctly carry out the examination and to carefully evaluate the results. CPET analyzes functional capacity revealing both symptomatic and asymptomatic intolerance to exercise. One of the most important advantages for clinicians derived by the use of CPET, beyond standard exercise electrocardiogr

Clinical determinants of the modified incremental step test in adults with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

OBJECTIVES: This study primarily aimed to investigate the clinical determinants of the Modified Incremental Step Test (MIST) in adults with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). A secondary objective was to compare the cardiopulmonary responses after the MIST and Incremental Shuttle Walk Test (ISWT), two commonly adopted symptom-limited maximum field tests in chronic respiratory diseases. METHODS: Forty-six patients with clinically stable bronchiectasis participated in this cross-sectional study. MIST and ISWT were performed to determine exercise capacity, while disease severity, fatigue

Electromyogram Power Spectrum and Cardiac Function Changes After Combined Aerobic Interval Training and Inspiratory Muscle Training in Chronic Heart Failure Patients.

Exercise intolerance and dyspnea are the major symptoms of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and are associated with a poor quality of life. In addition to impaired central hemodynamics, symptoms may be attributed to changes in peripheral skeletal muscles. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of aerobic interval training (AIT) combined with inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on cardiac and skeletal muscle function and on functional capacity and dyspnea in patients with CHF and inspiratory muscle weakness.Left ventricle ejection fraction was improved significantly after AIT and AIT &

Laryngeal widening and adequate ventilation by expiratory pressure load training improve aerobic capacity in COPD: a randomised controlled trial.

RATIONALE: Despite strategies acting on peripheral airway obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), exercise intolerance remains inadequately improved. We hypothesised that laryngeal narrowing is a potential treatment target of expiratory pressure load training (EPT) to improve exercise intolerance in COPD. METHODS: The effect of 3-month EPT was assessed in 47 patients with COPD divided into Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) mild-to-moderate (I-II) and severe-to-very severe (III-IV), randomly allocating 1:1 to EPT or control groups. The primary o

Exercise Rehabilitation and Chronic Respiratory Diseases: Effects, Mechanisms, and Therapeutic Benefits.

Chronic respiratory diseases (CRD), is a group of disorders, primarily chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, which are characterized by high prevalence and disability, recurrent acute exacerbations, and multiple comorbidities, resulting in exercise limitations and reduced health-related quality of life. Exercise training, an important tool in pulmonary rehabilitation, reduces adverse symptoms in patients by relieving respiratory limitations, increasing gas exchange, increasing central and peripheral hemodynamic forces, and enhancing skeletal muscle function. Aerobic, resistance, an

Fixed-intensity exercise tests to measure exertional dyspnoea in chronic heart and lung populations: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Exertional dyspnoea is the primary diagnostic symptom for chronic cardiopulmonary disease populations. Whilst a number of exercise tests are used, there remains no gold standard clinical measure of exertional dyspnoea. The aim of this review was to comprehensively describe and evaluate all types of fixed-intensity exercise tests used to assess exertional dyspnoea in chronic cardiopulmonary populations and, where possible, report the reliability and responsiveness of the tests. METHODS: A systematic search of five electronic databases identified papers that examined 1) fixed-inte

The concept of detection of dynamic lung hyperinflation using cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Dynamic lung hyperinflation (DLH) caused by air trapping, which increases residual air volume, is a common cause of shortness of breath on exertion in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). DLH is commonly evaluated by measuring the decrease in maximal inspiratory volume during exercise, or using the hyperventilation method. However, only few facilities perform these methods, and testing opportunities are limited. Therefore, we investigated the possibility of visually and qualitatively detecting DLH using data from a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). Four men who underwent symptom-l

Endurance capacity impairment in cold air ranging from skin cooling to mild hypothermia.

We tested the effects of cold air (0°C) exposure on endurance capacity to different levels of cold strain ranging from skin cooling to core … f cold exposure on endurance capacity at 70% peak power output. Skin cooling significantly impaired exercise tolerance time by ∼31%, whereas core cooling led to a further reduction of 30%-40% with no difference between Δ-0.5°C and Δ-1.0°C. Overall, simply cooling the skin impaired endurance capacity, but this impairment is further magnified by core cooling.

Antihypertensive treatment effect on exercise blood pressure and exercise capacity in older adults.

BACKGROUND: An exaggerated blood pressure (BP) response to exercise and low exercise capacity are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The effect of pharmacological antihypertensive treatment on exercise BP in older adults is largely unknown. This study investigates these effects accounting for differences in exercise capacity. METHODS: Participants enrolled in the Southall and Brent Revisited (SABRE) study undertook a 6-min stepper test with expired gas analysis and BP measured throughout exercise. Participants were stratified by antihypertensive treatment status and resting BP con

Evidence of a double anaerobic threshold in healthy subjects.

AIMS: The anaerobic threshold (AT) is an important cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) parameter both in healthy and in patients. It is normally determined with three approaches: V-slope method, ventilatory equivalent method, and end-tidal method. The finding of different AT values with these methods is only anecdotic. We defined the presence of a double threshold (DT) when a ΔVO2 > 15 mL/min was observed between the V-slope method (met AT) and the other two methods (vent AT). The aim was to identify whether there is a DT in healthy subjects. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analysed
