The Synthesis of Novel Glucosylamide Organosilicon Quaternary Ammonium Salts and Long-Lasting Modification of Different Materials.

Using renewable D-gluconic acid δ-lactone as the starting material, two novel glucosamide-based organosilicon quaternary ammonium surfactants (2/3SiDDGPBH) were synthesized through an environmentally friendly three-step process involving amidation, hydrophobic modification, and quaternization. Comprehensive characterization demonstrated their exceptional performance: surface tension reduction to 33.4 mN/m (2SiDDGPBH) and 33.64 mN/m (3SiDDGPBH), uniform spherical micelles (1-10 nm and 30-100 nm) were formed, and outstanding foam properties with 3SiDDGPBH developed, showing superior foamability

SHASI-ML: a machine learning-based approach for immunogenicity prediction in Salmonella vaccine development.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate prediction of immunogenic proteins is crucial for vaccine development and understanding host-pathogen interactions in bacterial diseases, particularly for Salmonella infections which remain a significant global health challenge. METHODS: We developed SHASI-ML, a machine learning-based framework for predicting immunogenic proteins in Salmonella species. The model was trained and validated using a curated dataset of experimentally verified immunogenic and non-immunogenic proteins. Three distinct feature groups were extracted from protein sequences: global properties, sequ

A plant-based oligomeric CD2v extracellular domain antigen exhibits equivalent immunogenicity to the live attenuated vaccine ASFV-G-∆I177L.

African swine fever (ASF), caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), is a deadly, highly contagious disease in both domestic pigs and wild boar. With mortality up to 100%, the disease has been making a serious impact on the swine industry worldwide. Because no effective antiviral treatment has been observed, proactive prevention such as vaccination remains the key to controlling the outbreak. In the pursuit of expediting vaccine development, our current work has made the first report for heterologous production of the viral outer envelope glycoprotein CD2v extracellular domain (CD2v ED),

Isolation and identification of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides from Tartary buckwheat albumin.

BACKGROUND: Tartary buckwheat protein peptides have been shown to be able to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), but the exact protein type has been less studied for ACE activity inhibition, and only a few types of ACE inhibitory peptides have been reported. In this study, we purified and identified ACE inhibitory peptides from albumin hydrolysate (AH). RESULTS: Albumin, globulin, prolamin and glutelin were extracted from Tartary buckwheat, and their ACE active peptides were obtained by a pepsin-trypsin sequential hydrolysis process. All four hydrolysates exhibited ACE inhibitory act

Sulfur Dioxide Promoted Mercury Fast Deposition over a Selenite-Chloride-Induced Surface from Wet Flue Gas.

Gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) extraction from industrial flue gases is undergoing intense research due to its unique properties. Selective adsorption that renders Hg0 to HgO or HgS over metal oxide- or sulfide-based sorbents is a promising method, yet the sorbents are easily poisoned by sulfur dioxide (SO2) and H2O vapor. The Se-Cl intermediate derived from SeO2 and HCl driven by SO2 has been demonstrated to stabilize Hg0. Thus, a surface-induced method was put forward when using γ-Al2O3 supported selenite-chloride (xSeO32--yCl-, named xSe-yCl) for mercury deposition. Results confirmed that

Pathogenic Potential of Respirable Spodumene Cleavage Fragments following Application of Regulatory Counting Criteria for Asbestiform Fibres.

Health risks from exposure to lithium-bearing spodumene cleavage fragments are unknown. While asbestiform fibres can lead to fibrosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer, controversy remains whether non-asbestiform cleavage fragments, having equivalent dimensions, elicit similar pathologic responses. The mineralogy of respirable particles from two alpha (α)-spodumene concentrate grades (chemical and technical) were characterised using semi-quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD). Particles were measured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the dimensions (length [L], diameter [D], aspect ratio

Investigation of monthly residues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water and sediment samples from Kirikkale Kizilirmak River Basin.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contain two or more benzene rings and are categorized as general environmentally harmful pollutants. PAHs occur because of various combustion and pyrolysis processes with different environmental and anthropogenic sources. The Kizilirmak River is one of the major important water sources used for drinking water and irrigation purposes in Turkey. There are important industrial facilities around the river and PAH pollution is important in terms of environmental health. This study was carried out to determine the residues of PAHs in water and sediment samples

Resisting the Heat: Bacterial Disaggregases Rescue Cells From Devastating Protein Aggregation.

Bacteria as unicellular organisms are most directly exposed to changes in environmental growth conditions like temperature increase. Severe heat stress causes massive protein misfolding and aggregation resulting in loss of essential proteins. To ensure survival and rapid growth resume during recovery periods bacteria are equipped with cellular disaggregases, which solubilize and reactivate aggregated proteins. These disaggregases are members of the Hsp100/AAA+ protein family, utilizing the energy derived from ATP hydrolysis to extract misfolded proteins from aggregates via a threading activity

Cytogenetic status of blood lymphocytes in schoolchildren living middle and high latitudes.

Intensive industrial development of the northern regions of the Russian Federation is primarily associated with the extraction and processing of natural resources, which leads to environmental pollution and makes the tasks of sanitary and hygienic monitoring urgent. Rapid methods are convenient for the rapid diagnosis of the genetic well-being of the environment, one of which is the micronucleus test in combination with the cytokinetic block cytochalasin B. mitosis. At the moment, there are scanty data on the inter-latitudinal comparison of the results of cytogenetic studies on cells of variou

A strong spatial association between e-waste burn sites and childhood lymphoma in the West Bank, Palestine.

A paper in the International Journal of Cancer analyzed Palestinian cancer registry data in the West Bank from 1998 to 2007, showing a cluster of elevated cancer incidence in rural villages in south-west Hebron, with a 4.10 risk ratio for childhood lymphoma (p = 0.0023). The paper called for investigation of the environmental or genetic etiologies of this cluster in an otherwise unremarkable rural area.1 Our research in these same villages shows them to be the center of an extensive informal electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) dismantling industry in Palestine, operating for almost two d

Halal authenticity of gelatin using species-specific PCR.

Consumption of food products derived from porcine sources is strictly prohibited in Islam. Gelatin, mostly derived from bovine and porcine sources, has many applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. To ensure that food products comply with halal regulations, development of valid and reliable analytical methods is very much required. In this study, a species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using conserved regions of mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b gene) was performed to evaluate the halal authenticity of gelatin. After isolation of DNA from gelatin powders with know

[Cluster cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma in an oil factory].

BACKGROUND: The traditional occupational hazards of the productive cycle of oils are attributable to chemicals (use of solvents, pesticides and other agents), dusts, labour accidents (trauma, ignition, explosion), noise, manual lifting, work organization and hot-wet microclimate. The latest risk is due to the use of high temperatures (from 50 up to 250 degrees C) during the processes of extraction with solvent and refining. No cases are reported in literature of asbestos related disease in subjects who worked in oil factories. Nevertheless the structure and organization of the workplace, which

Childhood cancers and atmospheric carcinogens.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To retest previous findings that childhood cancers are probably initiated by prenatal exposures to combustion process gases and to volatile organic compounds (VOCs); and to identify specific chemical hazards. DESIGN: Birth and death addresses of fatal child cancers in Great Britain between 1966 and 1980, were linked with high local atmospheric emissions of different chemical species. Among migrant children, distances from each address to the nearest emissions "hotspot" were compared. Excesses of outward over inward migrations show an increased prenatal or early infancy risk.

Anaerobic co-reduction of chromate and nitrate by bacterial cultures of Staphylococcus epidermidis L-02.

Industrial wastewater is often polluted by Cr(VI) compounds, presenting a serious environmental problem. This study addresses the removal of toxic, mutagenic Cr(VI) by means of microbial reduction to Cr(III), which can then be precipitated as oxides or hydroxides and extracted from the aquatic system. A strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis L-02 was isolated from a bacterial consortium used for the remediation of a chromate-contaminated constructed wetland system. This strain reduced Cr(VI) by using pyruvate as an electron donor under anaerobic conditions. The aims of the present study were to

An Affordable Artificial Intelligence Solution for Intelligent Document Processing of Faxed Documents.

Despite widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs), health systems remain heavily dependent on faxed documents for critical patient information. At New York University Langone Health, this represents nearly 20 million document-pages per year - laboratory results, consult notes, imaging prescriptions, refill requests, and prior authorizations - each requiring manual review and indexing. These workflows are time consuming, involve multiple staff touchpoints, can be prone to error, and may create delays for patients awaiting follow-up care. To provide the highest quality of care to p

Extraction, preparation, pharmacological activities, and potential applications of ginsenosides Rk1 and Rg5.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Panax species (Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolius L., and Panax notoginseng) are globally recognized as valuable medicinal and dietary resources with a long history of use in traditional medicine. Ginsenosides are their primary active constituents, among which rare ginsenosides, particularly Rk1 and Rg5, exhibit superior physiological activities-including antitumour, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects-compared to common ginsenosides. However, their industrial application is hindered by low natural abundance, structural complexity, and challenges in

Aqueous Adsorption of Rare Earth Elements by Organophosphonate-Ligand-Modified Metal-Organic Frameworks: The Role of Ligand Loading in Surface Complexation.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential to clean energy and many other technologies, but REE mines are concentrated in a few geographical locations in the world and their broad accessibility is susceptible to trade bottlenecks. Waste streams from mining and other industrial processes containing trace REEs are attractive REE sources for enhancing the supply chain, but their separation from the waste stream remains a key challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer well-defined, nanoscale pore structures highly conducive to chemical functionalization, allowing the design of organic ligand-m
