PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of veno-arteriovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-AV ECMO) with a secondary centrifugal pump to control blood flow in return pathways as an alternative to the conventional Hoffman clamp.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all adult patients who underwent V-AV ECMO in our hospital from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023. BACKGROUND: Endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) must be bound to a molecule of phosphatidylcholine (PC) to be fully functional, i.e. to interact with protein C/activated protein C (APC) properly. PC can be replaced with other lipids, such as lysophosphatidylcholine or platelet-activating factor, by the action of group V secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2-V), an enzyme that is upregulated in a variety of inflammatory conditions. BACKGROUND: The mechanism between ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) and multiple organ injury is unclear. The aim of our study was to investigate the mechanisms of VILI-induced distal organ injury.
METHODS: VILI was induced in rat lungs with high tidal volume (V(T)) ventilation of 40 mL/kg for 6 h. Rats with low V(T) ventilation of 6 mL/kg served as controls. Inflammatory and apoptotic indices in lung and distal organs were assessed.
