Family instability and the problem behaviors of children from economically disadvantaged families.

This longitudinal study examined the relation between family instability and the problem behaviors of children from economically disadvantaged families. Family instability was assessed when the children were ages 5 and 7 and included number of residence changes, changes of intimate caregiver relationships, and recent negative life events. The results showed direct concurrent relations between family instability and preschool children's externalizing behavior in the context of other family process variables, relations between subsequent family instability and 1st-grade children's internalizing

Identification and Functional Analysis of the CLAVATA3/embryo Surrounding Region-Related (CLE) Gene Family in Tartary Buckwheat Suggests the Promoting Effect of FtCLE7 on Growth and Nitrogen Accumulation.

Low nitrogen use efficiency caused by irrational nitrogen fertilization restricts Tartary buckwheat (TB) yield improvement. CLE peptides are key signaling molecules regulating plant nitrogen response, yet their functions in TB remain unclear. Herein, 16 FtCLE genes were identified in TB, and all encoding proteins contained conserved bioactive CLE mature peptides. The root-specific and high nitrogen-induced gene, FtCLE7, was screened as the key CLE member by expression analysis. Exogenous synthetic FtCLE7 peptide treatment significantly promoted growth and nitrogen accumulation in TB, and resha

Pediatric stroke-like episodes temporally associated with pollen exposure in GJB1-related CMTX1: an expanded family case report with serial MRI and DTI follow-up.

BACKGROUND: X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMTX1), caused by pathogenic variants in GJB1 encoding connexin 32, is primarily an inherited peripheral neuropathy. A minority of patients develop transient central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction with reversible white matter lesions, which may mimic acute paediatric stroke. Triggers such as fever, infection and exercise have been reported, but allergy-related exposure has rarely been discussed and causal mechanisms remain uncertain. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old boy developed acute left-sided weakness, dysarthria and central facial

Research-Based Whole Genome Sequencing Identifies Biallelic Loss of Function Variants in DOCK3 Gene Causing DOCK3-Related Disorder: The End of a Diagnostic Journey for This Family.

The DOCK3 gene (NM_004947.5) is located on chromosome 3p21.2 spanning 53 exons and encodes the dedicator of cytokinesis 3 protein. DOCK3 belongs to the family of guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) that activate GTPases. DOCK3 is expressed almost exclusively in the central nervous system and has been shown to promote axonal outgrowth. Biallelic disruptions of DOCK3 are implicated in a neurodevelopmental disorder presenting with intellectual disability, hypotonia and ataxia (OMIM: 618292). We report a 9-year-old female with global developmental delay, moderate intellectual disability, wi

How Does Family Communication Relate to Adolescent Dating Violence and Externalizing Behaviors? The Role of Parent-Adolescent Risk Communication and Attitudes toward Violence in a Nicaraguan Sample.

Family plays a critical role for adolescent socialization. Parents in particular can promote either adolescent prosocial or problem behaviors. The purpose of the present study is two-fold. The first is to investigate the main and interaction effects of family communication (i.e., verbal hostility and expressiveness) on adolescent risk behaviors (i.e., dating violence and externalizing behaviors). The second is to test whether family communication is indirectly associated with adolescent risk behaviors through parent-adolescent risk communication and adolescent attitudes toward violence. Segregation of two variants suggests the presence of autosomal dominant and recessive forms of WFS1-related disease within the same family: expanding the phenotypic spectrum of Wolfram Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: WFS1 was initially described as causative agent of autosomal recessive (AR) Wolfram syndrome, a childhood-onset disorder involving diabetes, optic atrophy, hearing loss and neurodegenerative features. However, the discovery of autosomal dominant (AD) disorders caused by this gene has resulted in clinical counselling and result interpretation challenges. OBJECTIVE: We seek to report a family that appears to segregate dominant and recessive forms of WFS1-related disease. METHODS/RESULTS: A 19-year-old woman presented with progressive childhood sensorineural hearing loss and recent

Pregnancy-related low back pain and pelvic girdle pain approximately 14 months after pregnancy - pain status, self-rated health and family situation.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) in pregnancy is distinct from pregnancy-related low back pain (PLBP). However, women with combined PLBP and PGP report more serious consequences in terms of health and function. PGP has been estimated to affect about half of pregnant women, where 25% experience serious pain and 8% experience severe disability. To date there are relatively few studies regarding persistent PLBP/PGP postpartum of more than 3 months, thus the main objective was to identify the prevalence of persistent PLBP and PGP as well as the differences over time in regard to pain status, s

Fish E587 glycoprotein, a member of the L1 family of cell adhesion molecules, participates in axonal fasciculation and the age-related order of ganglion cell axons in the goldfish retina.

Axons derived from young ganglion cells in the periphery of the retinae of larval and adult goldfish are known to fasciculate with one another and their immediate forerunners, creating the typical age-related order in the retinotectal pathway. Young axons express the E587 antigen, a member of the L1 family of cell adhesion molecules. Repeated injections of Fab fragments from a polyclonal E587 antiserum (E587 Fabs) into the eye of 3.4 cm goldfish disrupted the orderly fascicle pattern of RGC axons in the retina which was preserved in controls. Instead of bundling tightly, RGC axons crossed one

Identifying Gastrostomy Care and Home Gastrostomy Tube Feeding-Related Educational Content for Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Their Family Caregivers: A Delphi Panel With Professional Stakeholders.

Enteral nutrition is delivered through a gastrostomy tube to provide nutritional support to patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who have developed severe dysphagia at home. Complications may arise from gastrostomy and enteral nutrition when family caregivers do not provide adequate care. This study identifies key areas of educational content that can improve the care of patients with ALS requiring gastrostomy and home enteral nutrition. We conducted a modified three-round e-Delphi survey with health care experts to clarify their perspectives on the educational content regarding g

Prevalence and correlates of suicidal behaviours in a representative epidemiological youth sample in Hong Kong: the significance of suicide-related rumination, family functioning, and ongoing population-level stressors.

BACKGROUND: Young people are most vulnerable to suicidal behaviours but least likely to seek help. A more elaborate study of the intrinsic and extrinsic correlates of suicidal ideation and behaviours particularly amid ongoing population-level stressors and the identification of less stigmatising markers in representative youth populations is essential. METHODS: Participants (n = 2540, aged 15-25) were consecutively recruited from an ongoing large-scale household-based epidemiological youth mental health study in Hong Kong between September 2019 and 2021. Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of su

Novel LRRK2 mutations and other rare, non-BAP1-related candidate tumor predisposition gene variants in high-risk cancer families with mesothelioma and other tumors.

There is irrefutable evidence that germline BRCA1-associated protein 1 gene (BAP1) mutations contribute to malignant mesothelioma (MM) susceptibility. However, BAP1 mutations are not found in all cases with evidence of familial MM or in other high-risk cancer families affected by various cancers, including MM. The goal of this study was to use whole genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the frequency and types of germline gene variants occurring in 12 MM patients who were selected from a series of 141 asbestos-exposed MM patients with a family history of cancer but without a germline BAP1 mutat

Relational Spirituality and Transgenerational Obligations: The Role of Family in Lay Explanatory Models of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in Male Cameroonian Asylum Seekers and Undocumented Migrants in Europe.

Context: Diasporic Cameroonians are increasingly leading a transnational life in which family members are sustained through networks of relations and obligations. However, before arriving in Europe, the vast majority of African migrants who take the Mediterranean route are exposed to trauma and hardship. Moreover, the joint occurrence of forced displacement, trauma, and extended separation from families has a significant impact on mental health. Objectives: This study explores the role of culture-specific conceptualizations of family structures and transnationalism in explanatory models of pos
