The relationship between physical activity, body fatness and metabolic syndrome in urban South African school teachers: The sympathetic activity and ambulatory blood pressure in Africans study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) is rising because of increased levels of physical inactivity and obesity. In South Africa, information about teachers' physical activity (PA), body fatness and MS is limited. AIM: To assess the relationship between PA, body fatness and MS in urban South African teachers. SETTING: The study setting was in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District in the North West province of South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data drawn from the sympathetic activity and ambulatory blood pressure in Africans (SABPA) st

Lipid levels and changes in body fat distribution in treatment-naive, HIV-1-Infected adults treated with rilpivirine or Efavirenz for 96 weeks in the ECHO and THRIVE trials.

BACKGROUND: Pooled ECHO/THRIVE lipid and body fat data are presented from the ECHO (Efficacy Comparison in Treatment-Naïve, HIV-Infected Subjects of TMC278 and Efavirenz) and THRIVE (TMC278 Against HIV, in a Once-Daily Regimen Versus Efavirenz) trials. METHODS: We assessed the 96-week effects on lipids, adverse events (AEs), and body fat distribution (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) of rilpivirine (RPV) and EFV plus 2 nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (N[t]RTIs) in treatment-naive adults infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). RESULTS: Rilpivirine pr

Body fat percentage is more strongly associated with biomarkers of low-grade inflammation than traditional cardiometabolic risk factors in healthy young adults - the Lifestyle, Biomarkers, and Atherosclerosis study.

The primary aim was to appraise the relationship between body fat percentage and the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP) and orosomucoid in a population of young, non-smoking, healthy, Swedish adults, without any chronic diseases. A secondary aim was to compare whether these associations differed between the women using estrogen contraceptives and those who did not. We assessed the association in linear regression models between body fat percentage based on a bio-impedance measurement and plasma concentrations of CRP and orosomucoid in men and women aged 18-26 years, n = 834. Life-course analysis of a fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene variant and body mass index in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 using structural equation modeling.

The association between variation in the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene and adulthood body mass index (BMI; weight (kg)/height (m)(2)) is well-replicated. More thorough analyses utilizing phenotypic data over the life course may deepen our understanding of the development of BMI and thus help in the prevention of obesity. The authors used a structural equation modeling approach to explore the network of variables associated with BMI from the prenatal period to age 31 years (1965-1997) in 4,435 subjects from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. The use of structural equation mode

Heavy injection drug use is associated with lower percent body fat in a multi-ethnic cohort of HIV-positive and HIV-negative drug users from three U.S. cities.

BACKGROUND: The clinical implications of lower body weight in drug using populations are uncertain given that lower mean weights may still fall within the healthy range. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of type, mode and frequency of drug use on underlying body composition after accounting for differences in body shape and size. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 511 participants from the Tufts Nutrition Collaborative (TNC) Study. Data included measures of body composition, a 24-hour dietary recall, and a detailed health history and lifestyle questionnaire. Multivariate r

Assessment of skeletal muscle triglyceride content by (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in lean and obese adolescents: relationships to insulin sensitivity, total body fat, and central adiposity.

The metabolism and composition of skeletal muscle tissue is of special interest because it is a primary site of insulin action and plays a key role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. Intramyocellular (IMCL) triglyceride stores are an accessible form of energy that may decrease skeletal muscle glucose utilization, thereby contributing to impaired glucose metabolism. Because of the invasive nature of muscle biopsies, there is limited, if any, information about intramuscular lipid stores in children. The development of (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provides a unique n

Anovulation in eumenorrheic, nonobese adolescent girls born small for gestational age: insulin sensitization induces ovulation, increases lean body mass, and reduces abdominal fat excess, dyslipidemia, and subclinical hyperandrogenism.

Adolescent girls born small for gestational age (SGA) are at risk for anovulation, hyperinsulinism, subclinical hyperandrogenism, dyslipidemia, and central adiposity. Hyperinsulinemic insulin resistance has been proposed as a key pathogenetic factor underpinning these associations. We have tested this hypothesis in an intervention study by assessing the effects of insulin sensitization (metformin treatment, 850 mg/d for 3 months) in eumenorrheic, nonobese, anovulatory SGA adolescents [n = 13; mean birth weight, 2.3 kg; age, 15 yr; body mass index (BMI), 20.5 kg/m(2); >or=3 yr post-menarche] wh

Growth hormone binding protein correlates strongly with leptin and percentage body fat in GH-deficient adults, is increased by GH replacement but does not predict IGF-I response.

GH-binding protein (GHBP) corresponds to the extracellular domain of the GH receptor (GHR) and has been shown to be closely related to body fat. This study aimed to examine the inter-relationship between GHBP, leptin and body fat, and to test the hypothesis that GHBP is modified by GH replacement in GH-deficient adults and predicts IGF-I response. Twenty adults, mean age 47 years (range 20-69) with proven GH deficiency were randomly allocated to either GH (up to 0.25 U/kg/week in daily doses) or placebo for 3 months before cross-over to the opposite treatment. Plasma GHBP and leptin were measu

Increased weight-load improves body composition by reducing fat mass and waist circumference, and by increasing lean mass in participants with obesity: a single-centre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effects of increased weight-loading on body weight, body composition, fat mass distribution, physical activity and energy balance in individuals with obesity. METHODS: This single-centre non-blinded randomised controlled trial was conducted from August 1, 2021, through February 28, 2022. Adults with obesity class 1 (body mass index, BMI 30-35 kg/m2) were assigned to wear either a heavy (high load; 11% of body weight, n = 28) or light (low load; 1% of body weight, n = 30) weight vest for 8 h per day over 5 weeks. RESULTS: High-load treatment reduced fat mass (me

Imidacloprid decreases energy production in the hemolymph and fat body of western honeybees even though, in sublethal doses, it increased the values of six of the nine compounds in the respiratory and citric cycle.

BACKGROUND: Neonicotinoids, including imidacloprid (IM), cause harm to Apis mellifera in a number of ways, among others by impairing body maintenance, resistance and immunity. Energy resources are important to preventing this, as we hypothesized, not only in the hemolymph but particularly in the fat body, the insufficiently investigated, as yet, equivalent of the mammalian liver and pancreas. Both suppression and hormesis (diaphasic stressor response) of energy supply was reported in the energy-dependent traits of bees exposed to sublethal doses of imidacloprid. Therefore, our goal was to answ…

Pregnancy or cord 25-hydroxyvitamin D is not associated with measures of body fat or adiposity in children from three months to three years of age. An Odense Child Cohort study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The susceptibility to overweight in adults born during winter season may suggest foetal programming of prenatal vitamin D levels on adiposity. We investigated whether cord or pregnancy serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (s-25OHD) was associated with infant and child body fat measures in a Danish population-based prospective cohort. METHODS: In the Odense Child Cohort, 1905 singletons had cord s-25OHD and data on waist circumference (WC), weight, body mass index (BMI), and sum of skin folds (SSF) at median 3.7 months, 18.9 months and three years' age. Early and late pregnancy samples

Comparison of general obesity and measures of body fat distribution in older adults in relation to cancer risk: meta-analysis of individual participant data of seven prospective cohorts in Europe.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the associations of anthropometric indicators of general obesity (body mass index, BMI), an established risk factor of various cancer, and body fat distribution (waist circumference, WC; hip circumference, HC; and waist-to-hip ratio, WHR), which may better reflect metabolic complications of obesity, with total obesity-related and site-specific (colorectal and postmenopausal breast) cancer incidence. METHODS: This is a meta-analysis of seven prospective cohort studies participating in the CHANCES consortium including 18 668 men and 24 751 women with a mean age of 62 an

Body weight categories and fat distribution in relation to all-cause mortality among adults with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a population-based analysis of NHANES, 2007-2018.

OBJECTIVE: Although body mass index (BMI)-defined non-obesity metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) predicts poor prognosis, the role of visceral adiposity and weight-based phenotypes is unclear. This study aimed to examine the clinical correlates of four unique MASLD phenotypes based on BMI and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and to assess the prognostic value of this classification with respect to mortality. DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study with prospective mortality follow-up. SETTING: Nationally representative US population derived from the National

DEXA-Derived Body Fat Distribution and Its Correlation With Clinical, Anthropometric, Insulin Sensitivity, Metabolic, and Hormonal Parameters Among Kashmiri Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM) and is commonly associated with obesity, particularly central adiposity, which is linked to metabolic and hormonal derangements. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) enables the precise assessment of regional body fat distribution, overcoming the limitations of conventional anthropometric indices, which inadequately characterize fat distribution.

Body fat estimation in the Mexican women's national soccer team: a cross-sectional agreement study between a derived Mexican Football Federation anthropometric equation and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

BACKGROUND: Precise assessment of body composition is fundamental for monitoring training adaptations, guiding nutritional strategies, and informing performance-related decision-making in elite female soccer. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is considered a reference method; however, its limited accessibility restricts routine use in high-performance settings. Existing anthropometric equations often lack population-specific validation, particularly for elite Mexican female soccer players. This study aimed to derive and internally validate an anthropometric equation for estimating body fa
