Rational emotive health therapy for the management of depressive symptoms among parents of children with intellectual and reading disabilities in English language.

BACKGROUND: There is little data in developing countries such as Nigeria with regard to the impact of caring for their children with intellectual and reading disability (IRD) on the quality of life of the parents and the risk of psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the study was to assess the level of psychopathology, i.e., depression among parents of children with intellectual and reading disabilities. METHODS: This was pretest/posttest control group design with 198 parents (99 fathers/99 mothers) of 100 children with the diagnosis of IRD. The measures used in this study for da

Preventing children's aggression in immigrant Latino families: a mixed methods evaluation of the Families and Schools Together program.

The effectiveness of the evidence based program, Families and Schools Together (FAST), was examined in two inter-related studies with immigrant Latino (Mexican) families in the U.S. In Study 1, we reported findings from pre-test, 3-month post-test, and 12-month follow-up surveys of parents and children participating in the FAST program. Families were selected from communities that were randomly assigned to either intervention or control groups. A total of 282 parents (263 mothers and 19 fathers) participated in either the intervention (140 parents) or control (142 parents) condition over the c

Anemia and iron deficiency among schoolchildren in the Aral Sea region, Kazakhstan.

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency among schoolchildren in the Aral Sea region of Kazakhstan and to determine the various factors associated with anemia in this population. We conducted a cross-sectional study of randomly selected schoolchildren. Blood samples were collected for measuring hemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin (SF), total iron binding capacity (TIBC), and other hematological indices, and subjects were screened for anemia and iron deficiency. Associations between Hb concentration and SF, TIBC, anthropometric, and socioeconomic da

Investigation of the Neurocognitive Characteristics of Parents of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A CANTAB-Based Study.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heritable neurodevelopmental condition whose genetic underpinnings may manifest as subclinical cognitive and behavioral traits in first-degree relatives, including parents of diagnosed individuals. Assessing parental cognitive profiles is valuable for identifying Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP) endophenotypes. Accordingly, this study examined possible cognitive endophenotypes by comparing neurocognitive profiles of parents (mothers and fathers) of children with ASD versus parents of neurotypical children. This cross-sectional study included 124 parents o

Exploring Factors Associated With Parental Acceptance-Rejection Among Parents of Children With Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia in Central Java, Indonesia.

Children living with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) are at increased risk of psychosocial adjustment difficulties. Parental acceptance-rejection has been consistently associated with children's psychosocial adjustment across cultures. Understanding factors associated with parental acceptance-rejection in CAH families might help genetic counselors recognize those needing additional psychosocial assessment and support, potentially improving psychosocial adjustment in affected children. To our knowledge, no study has yet examined factors associated with parental acceptance-rejection in this

A patient with tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome misdiagnosed as Kawasaki disease: A case report and literature review.

This article reports a case of tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) misdiagnosed as Kawasaki disease and summarizes the clinical features and therapeutic progress of TRAPS and the relationship between its clinical manifestations and gene mutations. We retrospectively analyzed a patient with tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 1A (TNFRSF1A) -mutated auto-inflammatory disease who was misdiagnosed with Kawasaki disease in another hospital. The clinical features and therapeutic progress of TRAPS were analyzed by combining clinical features and gene repo

Associations between accelerated parental biologic age, autism spectrum disorder, social traits, and developmental and cognitive outcomes in their children.

Parental age is a known risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), however, studies to identify the biologic changes underpinning this association are limited. In recent years, "epigenetic clock" algorithms have been developed to estimate biologic age and to evaluate how the epigenetic aging impacts health and disease. In this study, we examined the relationship between parental epigenetic aging and their child's prospective risk of ASD and autism related quantitative traits in the Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation study. Estimates of epigenetic age were computed using three ro

Risk of attention deficit hyperactivity and autism spectrum disorders among the children of parents with autoimmune diseases: a nationwide birth cohort study.

Studies have suggested that maternal autoimmune diseases are associated with an increased risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, research on the association of paternal autoimmune diseases with ADHD and ASD risk has remained inconclusive. Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, we selected 708,517 family triads (father-mother-child) between 2001 and 2008 and followed them until the end of 2011. Parental autoimmune diseases as well as ADHD and ASD in children were identified during the study period. Increased AD

Beginning treatment for paediatric acute myeloid leukaemia: diagnosis and the early hospital experience.

Despite the plethora of clinical literature on the medical treatment for paediatric acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), there is a dearth of psycho-social literature on how families cope with either the disease or its treatments. The present article seeks to make a contribution by placing psychosocial aspects of childhood AML on the agenda. The findings are from a 5-year longitudinal, qualitative study on the psychosocial aspects of paediatric leukaemia. Qualitative data is gathered from open-ended interviews at three points in time on the experience of illness. The holistic findings from T1 presen

Interpretations of stillbirth.

BACKGROUND: Continuity is a major concept in the father-son domain of the Han Chinese value system in Taiwan. Aspects of continuity may include structure, interactions and other facets of family; however, providing descendants is the keystone of women's reality in these families. In a culture in which death is seen as a taboo subject and the unborn child has not been recognized as a real baby, losing a long-expected child at the end of pregnancy becomes a great challenge to women who have experienced stillbirth. AIM: The aim of this paper is to report a study exploring Taiwanese mothers' inte

Associations Between Mother-Adolescent and Father-Adolescent Relationships and Young Adult Health.

IMPORTANCE: Studies linking the quality of parent-adolescent relationships with young adult health outcomes could inform investments to support these complex relationships. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether consistently measured, modifiable characteristics of parent-adolescent relationships are associated with young adult health across multiple domains. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from waves I (1994-1995; ages 12-17 years) and IV (2008-2009; ages 24-32 years) of the US National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Childhood adversities and quality of sleep in adulthood: A population-based study of 26,000 Finns.

OBJECTIVE: To find out if childhood adversities predict poor sleep quality in working age. METHODS: Survey data from the Health and Social Support (HeSSup) study was used (N=25,605, 59% women). Negative childhood adversities and quality of sleep in adulthood were assessed by the questionnaire in 1998. Multinomial regression models were used. RESULTS: A graded association between childhood adversities and the quality of sleep in adulthood was found. Odds ratio (OR) of poor quality of sleep for those with multiple childhood adversities (3-6) was 3.64 (95% CI 2.94-4.50). The association between

Age of walking and intellectual ability in autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed walking is common in intellectual disability (ID) but may be less common when ID occurs with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous studies examining this were limited by reliance on clinical samples and exclusion of children with severe motor deficits. OBJECTIVE: To examine in a population-based sample if age of walking is differentially related to intellectual ability in children with ASD versus other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). METHODS: Participants were from the nested Autism Birth Cohort Study of the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). C

Women's choices regarding HIV testing, disclosure and partner involvement in infant feeding and care in a rural district of Malawi with high HIV prevalence.

The influence of HIV-related stigma on women's choices with regard to HIV testing, disclosure and partner involvement in infant feeding and care is not well understood in rural Malawi but may influence the risk of vertical HIV transmission and infant health. In a study of HIV-infected and -uninfected women in 20 rural locations in Zomba District, Malawi, mothers were questioned at 18-20 months post-partum about these issues. Ten per cent of women claimed unknown HIV status in labour so HIV testing should be routinely offered in Labour & Delivery wards. HIV-infected women were somewhat less lik

An inquiry into the effects of health related behaviour on dental health among young Asian children resident in a fluoridated city in Canada.

In low-fluoride areas, infant feeding practices have been implicated in the aetiology of extensive caries found in young Asian children. The purpose of this study was to compare the findings in low-fluoride Leeds, UK with fluoridated Edmonton, in Canada. A multilingual interpreter interviewed Asian parents, and their children aged 2 to 5 years were then given a dental examination. From the initial sample contacted by post, a 72 per cent response rate was achieved. Of the 72 parents interviewed, three-quarters reported that the child was initially breast fed, 11 for over 12 months. The majority

Recalled parent-child interactions that characterize "risky" early family environments.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences have been associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes and occur predominantly within the family. Many widely used assessments of early adversities have significant psychometric limitations and have not been adequately integrated with established theories relating parent-child interactions to similar outcomes. To examine the behaviorally specific ratings of parent-child interactions in early childhood associated with concurrent adverse childhood experiences believed to confer risk for poor health. METHOD: In total, 180 young adult undergrad

Consumption frequency of ultra-processed foods and beverages among 6- to 36-month-olds in Kampala, Uganda.

The nutrition transition in sub-Saharan Africa has led to increased consumption of ultra-processed foods in infancy, especially sweet foods. This has heightened the risk for nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, including dental caries and overweight/obesity, and promotes poor food choices later in life. The present study used a cross-sectional design to investigate the consumption frequency of ultra-processed foods and beverages among urban 6- to 36-month-olds attending four selected health facilities in Kampala using a standardised questionnaire and 24-h diet recall record. The primar

Obesity and type 2 diabetes risk in midadult life: the role of childhood adversity.

OBJECTIVE: Child abuse has been associated with poorer physical health in adulthood, but less is known about childhood adversity more broadly, including neglect and family problems, or the pathways from adversity to adult disease. We have examined how different stressful emotional or neglectful childhood adversities are related to adiposity and glucose control in midadulthood, taking into account childhood factors, and whether the relationships are mediated by adult health behaviors and socioeconomic position. METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal study of 9310 members of the 1958 Brit
