Two experiments were conducted to explore neurocognitive effects of phobia-related stimuli. Contingency assessments and event-related potentials (ERPs) were collected from animal-fearful individuals during probabilistic classification learning in diverse motivational-affective contexts. As revealed by ERPs, attentional amplification of cortical sensory processing occurred in response to phobia-related stimuli. The existence of subtypes of social phobia has been questioned. Although cluster analytic methods have been used to support various subtype models, a continuous model based on total number of feared social situations seems equally plausible. In a community sample, we calculated mean similarity measures for combinations of item pairs of feared social situations.
