A Weak Temporal Association Between Multi-Week Geomagnetic Activity and Satellite-Derived Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Anomalies.

Magnetic-field effects have been reported in controlled biological systems, but the relevance of weak geomagnetic variability to vegetation under natural conditions remains uncertain. We examined temporal associations between satellite-derived solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and geomagnetic disturbance derived from the Disturbance Storm Time (Dst) index. We defined the sign-inverted Dst index, SII, as the sign-inverted daily mean Dst, so that stronger negative Dst excursions corresponded to larger positive SII values. The primary exposure was the trailing 28-day mean SII, excludin

Methods and computational techniques for predicting adherence to treatment: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Treatment non-adherence of patients stands as a major barrier to effectively manage chronic conditions. However, non-adherent behavior is estimated to affect up to 50 % of patients with chronic conditions, leading to poorer health outcomes among patients, higher rates of hospitalization, and increased mortality. OBJECTIVE: This study offers a provision of a structured overview of the computational methods and techniques used to build predictive models of treatment adherence of patients. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted, and the following databases were searched to identify

Influence of Gaussian calculation method settings on QSRR model accuracy for DFT-calculated phenolic acid solubility energy.

CONTEXT: Quantitative structure-retention relationship is a key method for rapidly predicting the retention time of compounds. However, there have been few systematic studies on the application of QSRR to predict the retention time of phenolic acids, and there are many molecular descriptors and reference standards. This model utilized the experimental chromatographic retention parameter (tR value) of ten phenolic acid compounds as the dependent variable, while the solubility energy of the compounds in water (EW) and in methanol (EM) served as the independent variables. A new QSRR method was es

Alcohol's Effects on the Lung and Lung Disease.

PURPOSE: Alcohol misuse is widely accepted as an independent risk factor for a wide variety of lung diseases, such as pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Alcohol induces changes in the regulatory mechanisms of the lung, both at a mechanical and immunological level. Understanding these changes might help discover new targets for drugs and therapeutic approaches for the prevention of respiratory disease following alcohol misuse. SEARCH METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on January 25, 2025, in PubMed, Medline, and Embase of manuscripts published between January

Adult-plant resistance to leaf scald and net form net blotch in food barley genotypes at a hot spot location in Ethiopia.

Globally, the fungal pathogens Rhynchosporium graminicola and Pyrenophora teres f. teres produce foliar diseases that significantly reduce barley yield. These diseases are known as leaf scald and net form net blotch, respectively. One hundred food barley genotypes in reaction to the diseases were assessed in Ethiopia's natural environment. Since Ethiopia is a secondary center of genetic diversity in barley and consequently its pathogens, this assessment is certainly of interest in identifying new sources of resistance and using the identified genotypes in breeding. In addition, effect of the d

RABIES IMMUNOGLOBULIN: Brief history and recent experiences in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal viral zoonosis mainly transmitted via dog bites. The estimated 59'000 annual deaths caused by the disease are preventable through correct and timely administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PEP should be initiated as soon as possible after an exposure to a rabies suspected animal and consists of a course of active vaccinations and administration of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) in case of severe exposure. However, RIG is not accessible in most rabies endemic countries and its impact on survival in combination with modern vaccines and its cost-effectiveness

Repeated mild traumatic brain injury affects microbial diversity in rat jejunum.

Whether the integration of genetic/omic technologies in sports contexts will facilitate player success, promote player safety, or spur genetic discrimination depends largely upon the game rules established by those currently designing genomic sports medicine programs. The integration has already begun, but there is not yet a playbook for best practices. Thus far discussions have focused largely on whether the integration would occur and how to prevent the integration from occurring, rather than how it could occur in such a way that maximizes benefits, minimizes risks, and avoids the exacerbati

Experimental design to evaluate directed adaptive mutation in Mammalian cells.

BACKGROUND: We describe the experimental design for a methodological approach to determine whether directed adaptive mutation occurs in mammalian cells. Identification of directed adaptive mutation would have profound practical significance for a wide variety of biomedical problems, including disease development and resistance to treatment. In adaptive mutation, the genetic or epigenetic change is not random; instead, the presence and type of selection influences the frequency and character of the mutation event. Adaptive mutation can contribute to the evolution of microbial pathogenesis, canc

Management and environmental factors related to benzimidazole resistance in sheep nematodes in Northeast Spain.

A survey to determine the level of parasite resistance to benzimidazoles (BZ) under field conditions was performed on 107 commercial sheep farms located in the Aragon region of northeast Spain. Resistance was measured using the discriminant dose, a simplified form of the in vitro egg hatch assay (EHA). Taking into account the spatial structure of the data, a multivariate approach was applied to management and environmental variables as well as to their relationships with BZ resistance levels compiled from each flock. Results estimated that 11% of flocks had resistant parasite populations, alth

Fenofibrate, homocysteine and renal function.

Fibrates or PPAR alpha agonists, in particular fenofibrate, are known to increase homocysteine levels (Hcy). A 3 to 5 micromol/L increase in Hcy is commonly observed within the first few weeks of fenofibrate treatment; it then persists in plateau when treatment is continued and is reversible upon its cessation. Since its description in 1999, this pharmacological effect attracted a great deal of attention as epidemiological studies in most populations have shown that elevated Hcy levels i.e.Hcy> or =15 micromol/L are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events (CVD), venous throm

Surgery versus medical therapy for heavy menstrual bleeding.

BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) significantly impairs the quality of life of many otherwise healthy women. Perception of HMB is subjective and management usually depends upon what symptoms are acceptable to the individual. Medical treatment options include oral medication and a hormone-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS). Surgical options include conservative surgery (uterine resection or ablation) and hysterectomy. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness, safety and acceptability of surgery versus medical therapy for HMB. SEARCH STRATEGY: In September 2005 we searched the Co

The use of positron emission tomography in cerebrovascular disease.

Even with rapid development of other neuroimaging modalities such as MR imaging and CT, PET is the only technique that provides accurate, quantitative measurements of regional hemodynamics and metabolism in human subjects. Through the use of these combined measurements, we have greatly expanded our knowledge of the pathophysiology of cerebrovascular disease of different types. It has been possible to document the compensatory responses of the brain to reductions in perfusion pressure and to directly relate these responses to prognosis. PET measurements of OEF identify a subgroup of patients wh

Environmental signaling: what embryos and evolution teach us about endocrine disrupting chemicals.

The term "endocrine disrupting chemicals" is commonly used to describe environmental agents that alter the endocrine system. Laboratories working in this emerging field-environmental endocrine research-have looked at chemicals that mimic or block endogenous vertebrate steroid hormones by interacting with the hormone's receptor. Environmental chemicals known to do this do so most often with receptors derived from the steroid/thyroid/retinoid gene family. They include ubiquitous and persistent organochlorines, as well as plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, and natural hormones. These chemicals functi

In vitro formation and expansion of cysts derived from human renal cortex epithelial cells.

Acquired renal cysts derive from terminally differentiated tubular epithelium in adults as a consequence of increased epithelial cell proliferation, fluid accumulation and extracellular matrix remodelling. To understand better how human epithelial cysts may be initiated and progressively expand, cells from primary cultures of normal human adult renal cortex were dispersed in polymerized type I collagen. The transparent matrix permitted repeated observation by light microscopy of cyst formation from individual renal cells. The cyst cells reacted strongly with distal nephron histochemical marker

Botulinum toxin in the treatment of rare head and neck pain syndromes: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is used to treat various neurological disorders associated with pathologically increased muscle tone. Botulinum toxin inhibits the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction thereby inhibiting striatal muscle contractions. Besides the reduction in muscle tone BoNT tends to reduce pain in pain syndromes associated with muscle spasm. In addition, BoNT has been proposed as an analgesic, suggesting alternative non-cholinergic mechanisms of action.Surprisingly, BoNT was reported as a potential treatment for tension-type headac

Molecular mechanisms of light-induced photoreceptor apoptosis and neuroprotection for retinal degeneration.

Human retinal dystrophies and degenerations and light-induced retinal degenerations in animal models are sharing an important feature: visual cell death by apoptosis. Studying apoptosis may thus provide an important handle to understand mechanisms of cell death and to develop potential rescue strategies for blinding retinal diseases. Apoptosis is the regulated elimination of individual cells and constitutes an almost universal principle in developmental histogenesis and organogenesis and in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis in mature organs. Here we present an overview on molecular and cel
