Living with less: a qualitative study of economic insecurity and mental health among older adults.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored how older adults experience and make sense of economic insecurity and its impact on mental health, dignity, and everyday aging within a Middle Eastern sociocultural context. METHODS: A qualitative phenomenological design was adopted. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 community-dwelling older adults aged 60-80 years recruited from urban and rural areas through primary healthcare centers and social assistance offices. Interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis informed by Braun and Clarke's six-phase approach. RESULTS: F

The association of safety-net program participation with government perceptions, welfare stigma, and discrimination.

Safety-net programs in the United States offered critical support to counter food insecurity and poverty during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) are both means-tested programs with significant benefits. Take-up of SNAP and EITC is lower in California than nationwide and reasons for this difference are unclear. We examined associations of participation in SNAP and receipt of the EITC and perceptions of the US government, 2 types of welfare stigma (program stigma and social stigma), and perceived…

Systematic Review: HIV, Aging, and Housing-A North American Perspective, 2012-2023.

Advances in anti-retroviral therapy (ART) have decreased mortality rates and subsequently led to a rise in the number of HIV-positive people living longer. The housing experiences of this new population of interest-older adults (50 years and older) living with HIV-are under-researched. Understanding the housing experiences and unmet needs of older people with HIV can better provide comprehensive care services for them. This study's systematic review evaluated the peer-reviewed literature reporting housing access/insecurity/assistance/options, housing impact, and unmet needs of older individual

Athletic Trainer-Reported Prevalence of Mental Health, Substance Use, and Barriers to Health in Secondary Schools.

CONTEXT: Where a person lives can have a significant effect on health. Limited access to health care, food insecurity, lack of affordable housing, and violence increase a person's likelihood of poor health. Athletic trainers (ATs) can contribute to identifying and improving the determinants of health that affect student-athletes. OBJECTIVES: (1) What were the current perceptions ATs had about the health behaviors (specifically mental health and substance use) of high school student-athletes? (2) What were the barriers that ATs experienced when providing health services to high school student-…

Health and treatment implications of food insufficiency among people living with HIV/AIDS, Atlanta, Georgia.

HIV/AIDS is concentrated among the inner-city poor and poverty may directly interfere with HIV treatment. This study examined food insuffici … ment status, income, housing, depression, social support, and non-alcohol substance use. Hunger and food insecurity are prevalent among people living with HIV/AIDS, and food insufficiency is closely related to multiple HIV-related health indicators, particularly medication adherence. Interventions that provide consistent and sustained meals to people living with …

Mechanisms and perceived mental health changes after a livelihood intervention for HIV-positive Kenyans: Longitudinal, qualitative findings.

While food insecurity and poverty worsen mental health outcomes among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV), few intervention studies have targeted poverty and food insecurity as a way to improve mental health. Among HIV-positive patients, addressing such upstream determinants may prove crucial to ensure better mental health and HIV clinical outcomes. We integrated longitudinal, qualitative research into a randomized trial of a livelihood intervention to understand processes and mechanisms for how the intervention may affect mental health among HIV-infected Kenyan adults. In-depth interviews wer…

Maternal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to foraging uncertainty: A model of individual vs. social allostasis and the "Superorganism Hypothesis".

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is a major global contributor to developmental origins of adult disease. The allostatic load of maternal food uncertainty from variable foraging demand (VFD) activates corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) without eliciting hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activation measured on a group level. Individual homeostatic adaptations of the HPA axis may subserve second-order homeostasis, a process we provisionally term "social allostasis." We postulate that maternal food insecurity induces a "superorganism" state through coordination of individual HPA axis response. …

dsRNA-Loaded Silica Nanoparticles for the Management of Potato Virus Y in Potato Plants.

Food insecurity is a prominent global issue. With a predicted global population of 9 billion by 2050, food production must double at a minimum to accommodate these growing numbers. One approach to combat food insecurity is targeting plant pathogens that affect crop quality and yield, resulting in an overall increase in edible food production. Plant pathogen management has previously utilized the RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism for remediation; however, its widespread use has technical limitations. In this study, silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) were utilized as nanocarriers of therapeutic dou…

Edible layered double hydroxide nanoparticles on 3D scaffolds for accelerated biological cell development.

By 2050, surging global population will intensify food insecurity, making it imperative to develop innovative strategies that boost plant productivity. Plants are our core food supply. Engineered nanoparticles have emerged as promising growth stimulants; however, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), despite their efficacy, are inedible and pose eco-toxicity concerns that restrict their agrobiological deployment. Furthermore, conventional whole-tissue studies obscure individual cell responses, preventing precise characterization of nanoparticle-cell interactions. Here, we introduce magnesium-aluminium laye…

Creating Integrated Strategies for Increasing Access to Healthy Affordable Food in Urban Communities: A Case Study of Intersecting Food Initiatives.

In New York and other cities, substantial evidence documents that community food environments interact with inequitable allocation of power, wealth, and services to shape the distribution of diet-related diseases and food insecurity. This case study shows how one Central Brooklyn community organization, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, has launched multiple coordinated food initiatives in order to reduce the burden of food-related health problems and boost community development. The report used standard case study methods to document the implementation of the New York City Food and …

Feeding desires: Understanding the food needs and wishes of women experiencing homelessness in São Paulo.

Food desires have been studied as a critical subjective aspect of eating and are closely linked to the pleasure and comprehensive care associated with food. Women experiencing homelessness (WeH) face food insecurity intertwined with social stigma and neglect based on sex, race, and sexuality. However, the WeH's desire is often overlooked in studies and government policies on food security. Motivated by our understanding of WeH's food desires within the Human Right to Adequate Food framework, we conducted an ethnographic study between 2018 and 2022 in São Paulo, Brazil. Our methods included non…
