PURPOSE: Dry eye is a major ocular pathology worldwide. Although dry eye is a multifactorial disease, recent studies have shown that chronic immunologic processes have a pivotal role in its pathogenesis, characterized by the infiltration of immune cells in the lacrimal glands, elevated levels of tear inflammatory cytokines, and increased density of immune cells in the cornea and conjunctiva. The purpose of this study was to objectively assess the tarsal accessory lacrimal gland of Wolfring and its excretory duct by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The upper eyelid of 6 female grey rabbits (2 kg) was fixed in the fully extended configuration with buffered glutaraldehyde. At the tarsal/orbital portion of the palpebral conjunctiva, a series of prominent acinar glands were located by both light microscopy and TEM. Cells within the acini were characterised by apical tight junctions and desmosomal connections as well as abundant intra-cytoplasmic osmophillic (secretory) granules.

An 8-month-old girl presented with a painless mass on her left shoulder that was noticed by her mother. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-defined subcutaneous cystic mass. The excised cyst was lined with ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with occasional goblet cells and diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst. She made a good recovery.

A study was conducted on 107 eyes of 70 patients with dry eye disorders and mechanical and chemical extrinsic alterations and 64 eyes of 32 control subjects in order to describe a possible specific response of the conjunctival and corneal surface.
