Astrocyte neuronal metabolic coupling in the anterior cingulate cortex of mice with inflammatory pain.

Chronic pain is a major global concern, with at least 1 in 5 people suffering from chronic pain worldwide. Mounting evidence indicates that neuroplasticity of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a critical step in the development of chronic pain. Previously, we found that chronic pain and fear learning are both associated with enhanced neuronal excitability and cause similar neuroplasticity-related gene expression changes in the ACC of male mice. However, neuroplasticity, imposes large metabolic demands. In the brain, neurons have the highest energy needs and interact with astrocytes, which

Molecular mechanisms and behavioral relevance underlying neural correlates of childhood neglect.

BACKGROUND: Childhood neglect is associated with brain changes, yet the molecular mechanisms and behavioral relevance underlying such associations remain elusive. METHODS: We calculated fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) using resting-state functional MRI and tested their correlation with childhood neglect across a large sample of 510 healthy young adults. Then, we investigated the spatial relationships of the identified neural correlates of childhood neglect with gene expression, neurotransmitter, and behavioral domain atlases. RESULTS: We found that more severe chil

Abnormal dynamics of functional connectivity density and effective connectivity in overactive bladder.

PURPOSE: The study aims to analyze alterations in dynamic functional connectivity density (dFCD) and effective connectivity (dEC) patterns using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), hypothesizing that overactive bladder (OAB) patients will exhibit distinct dFCD and dEC patterns, reflecting altered neural communication underlying the OAB. METHODS: Forty-three female OAB patients and 40 female healthy controls (HC) underwent resting-state fMRI. Sliding window correlation was used to calculate the variability of the dFCD. The changes in dFCD-based dEC between the two groups were examine

Structural connectivity modifications following deep brain stimulation of the subcallosal cingulate and nucleus accumbens in severe anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a mental health disorder characterized by significant weight loss and associated medical and psychological comorbidities. Conventional treatments for severe AN have shown limited effectiveness, leading to the exploration of novel interventional strategies, including deep brain stimulation (DBS). However, the neural mechanisms driving DBS interventions, particularly in psychiatric conditions, remain uncertain. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by examining changes in structural connectivity in patients with severe AN before and after DBS. METHODS:

Smoking Progression and Nicotine-Enhanced Reward Sensitivity Predicted by Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Salience and Executive Control Networks.

INTRODUCTION: The neural underpinnings underlying individual differences in nicotine-enhanced reward sensitivity (NERS) and smoking progression are poorly understood. Thus, we investigated whether brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC.) during smoking abstinence predicts NERS and smoking progression in young light smokers. We hypothesized that high rsFC between brain areas with high densities of nicotinic receptors (insula, anterior cingulate cortex [ACC], hippocampus, thalamus) and areas involved in reward-seeking (nucleus accumbens [NAcc], prefrontal cortex [PFC]) would predict N

Direct changes of neurometabolic concentrations in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex among obsessive-compulsive patients after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a promising new noninvasive brain stimulation therapy, its underlying mechanisms of action remain unknown. OCD patients exhibit impaired response control and attention shifting, which is linked to some brain areas such as anterior cingulate cortex and basal ganglia. OCD patients also display altered neurometabolic concentrations in cortical cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical (CSTC). In this study, we aimed to elucidate efficacy of rTMS treatment in alleviating related symptoms and pregenual anterior cingulate

Decreased Brain GABA Levels in Patients with Migraine Without Aura: An Exploratory Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study.

Increasing neurophysiological studies had revealed that regional excitation-inhibition imbalance in the brain played a key role in the pathogenesis of migraine. This study aimed to explore the alterations in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate/glutamine complex (Glx) levels in the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC) and medial prefrontal lobe (mPFC) of patients with migraine without aura (MWoA) and investigate the correlation between neurotransmitter levels and clinical indicators. A total of 28 patients with MWoA and 28 sex-, age-, and education level-matched healthy controls (HCs) underw

Decreased Prosaposin and Progranulin in the Cingulate Cortex Are Associated with Schizophrenia Pathophysiology.

Prosaposin (PSAP) and progranulin (PGRN) are two lysosomal proteins that interact and modulate the metabolism of lipids, particularly sphingolipids. Alterations in sphingolipid metabolism have been found in schizophrenia. Genetic associations of PSAP and PGRN with schizophrenia have been reported. To further clarify the role of PSAP and PGRN in schizophrenia, we examined PSAP and PGRN levels in postmortem cingulate cortex tissue from healthy controls along with patients who had suffered from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder. We found that PSAP and PGRN levels are r

Neural profiles of observing acceptance and rejection decisions in human mate choice copying.

Mate choice copying refers to an agent copying the choice for a potential sexual/romantic partner made by a relevant model and has been observed across many species. This study investigated the neural profiles of two copying strategies in humans - acceptance and rejection copying - using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Female participants observed female models accepting, rejecting, or being undecided about (control), males as potential romantic partners before and after rating their own willingness to choose the same males. We found that observing acceptance shifted participants

Working memory load modulates oscillatory activity and the distribution of fast frequencies across frontal theta phase during working memory maintenance.

Working memory (WM) is a keystone of our cognitive abilities. Increasing load has been shown to dampen its performance and affect oscillatory neural activity in different frequency bands. Nevertheless, mixed results regarding fast frequencies activity and a lack of research on WM load modulations of cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling mechanisms preclude a better understanding of the impact of increased WM load levels on brain activity as well as inter-regional communication and coordination supporting WM processes. Hence, we analyzed the EEG activity of 25 participants while performing a

Trigeminal neuropathy causes hypomyelination in the anterior cingulate cortex, disrupts the synchrony of neural circuitry, and impairs decision-making in male rats.

Infraorbital nerve-chronic constriction injury (ION-CCI) has become the most popular chronic trigeminal neuropathic pain (TNP) injury animal model which causes prolonged mechanical allodynia. Accumulative evidence suggests that TNP interferes with cognitive functions, however the underlying mechanisms are not known. The aim of this study was to investigate decision-making performance as well as synaptic and large-scale neural synchronized alterations in the spinal trigeminal nucleus (SpV) circuitry and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) neural circuitry in male rats with TNP. Mechanism differences between typical yin and typical yang personality individuals assessed by Five-Pattern Personality Inventory (FPPI): Evidence from resting-state brain functional networks.

BACKGROUND: Most studies assessing brain-personality mechanisms have used Western personality questionnaires. However, Western personality questionnaires may not objectively reflect the personality characteristics of individuals in Eastern cultures such as China. Hence, we adopted the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and the Chinese localized scale, FPPI, to explore the brain mechanisms differences of typical yin and typical yang personalities of individuals in China. METHODS: 30 typical yin personality participants (TYI) and 34 typical yang personality participants (TYA) were enr

Discriminating stress from rest based on resting-state connectivity of the human brain: A supervised machine learning study.

Acute stress induces large-scale neural reorganization with relevance to stress-related psychopathology. Here, we applied a novel supervised machine learning method, combining the strengths of a priori theoretical insights with a data-driven approach, to identify which connectivity changes are most prominently associated with a state of acute stress and individual differences therein. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans were taken from 334 healthy participants (79 females) before and after a formal stress induction. For each individual scan, mean time-series were extracte

Interactive influence of self and other language behaviors: Evidence from switching between bilingual production and comprehension.

The neural mechanisms underlying one's own language production and the comprehension of language produced by other speakers in daily communication remain elusive. Here, we assessed how self-language production and other-language comprehension interact within a language switching context using event-related functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (er-fMRI) in 32 unbalanced Chinese-English bilinguals. We assessed within-modality language interference during language production and comprehension as well as cross-modality interference when switching from production to comprehension and vice versa. Improved and residual functional abnormalities in major depressive disorder after electroconvulsive therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can induce fast remission of depression but still retain the residual functional impairments in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. To delineate the different functional circuits of effective antidepressant treatment and residual functional impairments is able to better guide clinical therapy for depression. Herein, voxel-level whole brain functional connectivity homogeneity (FcHo), functional connectivity, multivariate pattern classification approaches were applied to reveal the specific circuits for treatment response and residual impairments in MDD pati

The impact of phantom decoys on the neural processing of valuation.

Rational decision theories posit that good choices should be based solely on information that is relevant to the choice at hand. However, introducing an inferior option that would never be chosen can influence choices among other relevant options, known as decoy effect. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) combined with a simple gambling task to investigate the neural signature of decision-making in or against the influence of the decoy effect in inferior and superior phantom decoy conditions. The fMRI results show that compared with choosing against the influence of the domina

Altered brain creatine cycle metabolites in bipolar I disorder with childhood abuse: A 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood abuse (CA) is a risk factor for a number of psychiatric disorders and has been associated with higher risk of developing bipolar disorders (BD). CA in BD has been associated with more severe clinical outcomes, but the neurobiological explanation for this is unknown. Few studies have explored in vivo measurement of brain metabolites using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in CA and no studies have investigated the association of CA severity with brain neurometabolites in BD. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether CA severity is associated with changes in anterior

Over-activation of primate subgenual cingulate cortex enhances the cardiovascular, behavioral and neural responses to threat.

Stress-related disorders such as depression and anxiety are characterized by enhanced negative emotion and physiological dysfunction. Whilst elevated activity within area 25 of the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC/25) has been implicated in these illnesses, it is unknown whether this over-activity is causal. By combining targeted intracerebral microinfusions with cardiovascular and behavioral monitoring in marmosets, we show that over-activation of sgACC/25 reduces vagal tone and heart rate variability, alters cortisol dynamics during stress and heightens reactivity to proximal and d

Functional dissociation of anterior cingulate cortex and intraparietal sulcus in visual working memory.

Previous electrophysiological studies of lateralized visual working memory (VWM) identified an ERP component, defined as contralateral delay activity (CDA), directly modulated by the number of items held in memory. One of the main candidate as the cortical source of this ERP component is the inferior intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Moreover, previous neuroimaging studies put forth evidence for the presence of a distributed VWM network involving also prefrontal areas and in particular the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Nonetheless, the understanding of the functional role of ACC is still debated.
