Ankle Injuries in Dancers.

The term dance encompasses a broad range of different styles; much of the orthopaedic literature has focused on ballet dancers. Injury is common in dancers at all levels, and many serious dancers sustain multiple injuries as they progress through their career. Foot and ankle injuries are among the most common injuries experienced by dancers. These injuries include those that are specific to dancers because of the unique physical maneuvers required to effectively perform, but they can also include common injuries that may require relatively different treatment because of the physical demands of

Limb salvage treatment for Gollop-Wolfgang complex (femoral bifurcation, complete tibial hemimelia, and hand ectrodactyly).

We reported the findings from three patients with Gollop-Wolfgang complex and demonstrated the results of five limb salvage treatments for this condition. All three femoral bifurcations were accompanied by ipsilateral complete tibial hemimelia. Two patients showed contralateral complete or partial tibial hemimelia, and one patient had hand ectrodactyly. The five limb salvage treatments included resection of the anteromedial bifurcated femur in three limbs, foot centralization in five limbs, tibiofibular fusion in one limb with partial tibial hemimelia, fibular transfer (Brown's procedure) in t

[Effects of age on causes of hospitalization in children suffering from sickle cell disease].

The objective of this work was to assess the frequency the nature of complications and prognosis of the disease in children suffering from sickle cell disease. This retrospective study was conducted from January 2002 to December 2003 among 251 children suffering from sickle cell disease, hospitalized at the Brazzaville Teaching Hospital, Congo. The main hospitalization causes were dominated by the vaso-occlusive crisis (26.7%), anaemic crisis (20.3%) and infections (36.6%). The vaso-occlusive crisis were observed particularly in the 5 year-old children (p < 0.05); the hand-foot syndrome concer…

Temperature as a Key Modulator: Investigating Phosphorylation Patterns of p.Asn666 PDGFRB Variants and Their Role in Downstream Signaling.

Four different amino acid substitutions have been reported at the p.Asn666 position in platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRβ): p.Asn666Lys, p.Asn666Tyr, p.Asn666Ser, and p.Asn666His. All four substitutions result in strikingly different phenotypes, ranging from somatic infantile myofibromatosis in p.Asn666Lys and ocular pterygium-digital keloid dysplasia in p.Asn666Tyr to a severe form of Penttinen syndrome in p.Asn666Ser, while p.Asn666His is associated with a complex phenotype characterized by debilitating hand and foot contractures and facial coarseness. Here, we show that the p

Current Status and Advancements in Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a treatment modality has been around for the last four decades, but only truly gained popularity over the last 10 to 15 years in medicine, in a variety of fields ranging from regenerative medicine to infertility treatment. It has gained popularity, especially in treating musculoskeletal conditions where the bulk of research has been performed and published. There is level I evidence available supporting its efficacy in the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), epicondylitis, bursitis, compressive neuropathy, plantar fasciitis, muscular injuries and osteochondral lesio

Discontinuous polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with multiple systemic disorders and unique genetic mutations: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) is an uncommon developmental bone disease in which normal bone and marrow are replaced by pseudotumoral tissue. The etiology of PFD is unclear, but it is generally thought to be caused by sporadic, post-zygotic mutations in the GNAS gene. Herein, we report the case of a young female with bone pain and lesions consistent with PFD, unique physical findings, and gene mutations. CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old female presented with unbearable bone pain in her left foot for 4 years. Multiple bone lesions were detected by radiographic examinations, and a

Orofacial complex regional pain syndrome: pathophysiologic mechanisms and functional MRI.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is one of the most challenging chronic pain conditions and is characterized by burning pain, allodynia, hyperalgesia, autonomic changes, trophic changes, edema, and functional loss involving mainly the extremities. Until recently, very few reports have been published concerning CRPS involving the orofacial area. We report on a 50-year-old female patient who presented with unbearable pain in all of her teeth and hypersensitivity of the facial skin. She also reported intractable pain in both extremities accompanied by temperature changes and orofacial pain t

Onset of male gynaecomastia in a patient treated with sunitinib for metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

Sunitinib is an orally administered multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor that has demonstrated substantial antitumour activity in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. The more common grade 3 or 4 adverse effects of sunitinib include hypertension, fatigue, hand-foot syndrome, elevated lipase and lymphopenia. We report the case of a 69-year-old patient with metastatic renal clear-cell carcinoma, treated with nephrectomy and three lines of therapy (interleukin-2 plus interferon-alpha2a, vinorelbine plus gemcitabine, and capecitabine), who started a fourth-line therapy with oral sunit…

A single C to T transition in intron 5 of LMBR1 gene is associated with triphalangeal thumb-polysyndactyly syndrome in a Chinese family.

Triphalangeal thumb-polysyndactyly syndrome (TPT-PS) is a type of human hand-foot malformation. In this study, we collected data from a Chinese family with TPT-PS and mapped the disease region to chromosome 7q36. By using a fine mapping study and a haplotype analysis, we narrowed the affected region to 1.7cM between markers D7S2465 and D7S2423, which contains four candidate genes: HLXB9, LMBR1, NOM1, and RNF32. By sequence analysis, we found no sequence alterations, which are specific to the patients in the transcribed regions and in the intron-exon boundaries among the four genes. After close

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease in Calicut.

OBJECTIVE: Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a mild exanthematous illness seen worldwide, affecting mainly children under ten years of age. The causative agents were initially Coxsackie virus type A 16 and related serotypes. The situation changed drastically about thirty years ago with the advent of a new aetiological agent, Enterovirus type 71 (EV 71), which has caused very large outbreaks with severe complications and many deaths. METHODS: The authors report an outbreak of papulovesicular lesions on the skin and oral mucosa compatible with the diagnosis of HFMD in children in and around
