BACKGROUND: Sledding, a fun and easily accessible winter sport, can potentially generate significant speed and energy posing a risk of injury. The objective of this study was to determine the speeds and potential kinetic energy generated by sledders.
METHODS: Observational study conducted of single sledders at sledding hills located in Monroe County, NY during February 2007. Participant's weight, age, and sled type were recorded. Speeds were recorded using Stalker police grade radar guns. Multiple runs by each sledder were measured. The kinetic energy for each run was calculated. Investigator

The history of motorcycle helmet legislation in the United States reflects the extent to which concerns about individual liberties have shaped the public health debate. Despite overwhelming epidemiological evidence that motorcycle helmet laws reduce fatalities and serious injuries, only 20 states currently require all riders to wear helmets. During the past 3 decades, federal government efforts to push states toward enactment of universal helmet laws have faltered, and motorcyclists' advocacy groups have been successful at repealing state helmet laws. This history raises questions about the po

Though a pastime rarely considered rough or dangerous, sledding is not risk-free. The presentation of several serious injuries to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, led us to examine our emergency department and admitting records to determine the incidence of neurological injury among children involved in sledding accidents. We discovered 24 children who had sustained brain or spine injuries as sequelae to sledding mishaps during a 5-year period. The ages ranged from 3 months to 15 years. Injuries included multiple skull fractures, 2 epidural hematomas, 1 subdural hemat

This article reviews the available literature regarding injuries in off-road bicyclists. Recent progress in injury research has allowed the description of several patterns of injury in this sport. Mountain biking remains popular, particularly among young males, although sales and participation figures have decreased in the last several years. Competition in downhill racing has increased, while cross-country racing has decreased somewhat in popularity. Recreational riders comprise the largest segment of participants, but little is known about the demographics and injury epidemiology of noncompe

We compared MR anatomy and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) functional methods in locating the central sulcus. In 20 normal volunteers and 58 patients with intracranial structural lesions, the short latency somatosensory evoked magnetic fields for median nerve and posterior tibial nerve stimuli were measured over the entire head, using a helmet shaped MEG system. The dipole positions estimated by a single current dipole model were projected onto the three dimensional MRI. In 94% of a total of 156 hemispheres, N20m dipole positions for median nerve stimuli coincided with the central sulcus defined

A review of 156 horseback-riding accidents that occurred in southern Alberta over a 6-year period and resulted in nervous system trauma, including 11 deaths, is presented. The majority (81%) of accidents occurred during recreational activity and 81% were associated with falling or being thrown from a horse. Head injury occurred in 92% of patients and accounted for all of the 11 deaths. Spinal injury occurred in 13% of the patients and was associated with head injury in 40%. One peripheral nerve injury was identified. Helmets were used by only two victims. The 11 deaths that occurred as a conse

People use horses for work and recreational purposes on farms and ranches in Alberta, Canada. This retrospective descriptive review examines the records of all those people killed while around horses between 1975 and 1990. The intent is to ascertain features common to these injuries and to suggest prevention strategies. Records from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Alberta revealed that 38 people were involved in horse-related fatalities between 1975 and 1990 and that 22 died of head injuries. All 38 deaths were classified as accidental. Some of these might have been prevented, or i

In a prospective study from northern Sweden, a series of 137 persons injured in snowmobiling accidents was analyzed. Most of the injured riders were males aged 10 to 39 years. Almost two-thirds of the accidents occurred at week-ends and the frequency was highest in the months of March and April. Three of four persons were injured during racing or leisure activities. The accidents most often involved sudden arrest of the snowmobile due to collision with an obstacle, or fall from the machine while driving it. The injuries were of major degree (MAIS greater than or equal to 2) in almost half of t

INTRODUCTION: Child occupant safety in motor-vehicle crashes is evaluated using Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATD) seated in optimal positions. However, child occupants often assume suboptimal positions during real-world driving trips. Head impact to the seat back has been identified as one important injury causation scenario for seat belt restrained, head-injured children (Bohman et al., 2011). There is therefore a need to understand the interaction of children with the Child Restraint System to optimize protection.
METHOD: Naturalistic driving studies (NDS) will improve understanding of out

The round house kick (RHK) is a common technique in taekwondo (TKD). The kicking action originates from the dynamic stability of the pivot leg. However, some knee injuries are caused by more difficult kicking strategies, such as kicks to the opponent's head. This study analyses the effects on TKD players in the lower extremity kinematic and neuromuscular reactions from different kicking heights. This study recruited 12 TKD players (age=20.3 ± 1.3 years, height = 1.72 ± 0.09 m, mass = 62.17 ± 9.45 kg) with no previous lower extremity ligament injuries. All athletes randomly performed 3 RHK at d

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The types, mechanisms and clinical manifestations of head injuries (extracranial, cranial and intracranial) after instrumental delivery are described along with current evidence of their prevention and management.
RECENT FINDINGS: Asymptomatic subdural hematomas can occur in up to 6.1% of uncomplicated vaginal deliveries. Maternal nulliparity, incorrect placement of vacuum extraction cup and failed vacuum extraction are predisposing factors to subgaleal hemorrhage. Injuries associated with the vacuum devices may be minimized if the recommended limits for a safe traction for

The care of burns to the head, face, and neck remains a challenge to the clinician. From 1978 to 1986, halo traction was used as an immobilizing device and as a protective frame for 31 patients with burns to the head (n = 8), face (n = 24), and neck (n = 28). The patients ranged in age from 8 months to 80 years (mean = 16 years) and had second- and third-degree burns covering a total body surface area of 8% to 75% (mean = 28%). The halo was used for an average of eight days (range one to 19 days) and served to immobilize and protect areas of fresh skin grafts, as well as to elevate and protect

We present device standards for low-power non-invasive electrical brain stimulation devices classified as limited output transcranial electrical stimulation (tES). Emerging applications of limited output tES to modulate brain function span techniques to stimulate brain or nerve structures, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), and transcranial pulsed current stimulation (tPCS), have engendered discussion on how access to technology should be regulated. In regards to legal regulations and manufacturing standards for compar
