INTRODUCTION: Residual hearing in cochlear implant (CI) candidates requires the functional integrity of the nerve in particular regions of the cochlea. Nerve activity can be elicited as electrically evoked compound action potentials (ECAP) after cochlear implantation. We hypothesize that ECAP thresholds depend on preoperative residual hearing ability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analyzed 84 adult cochlear implant users who had received a Nucleus® CI632 Slim Modiolar Electrode and who preoperatively had had residual hearing. Inclusion criteria were severe to profound he

In order to assess occupational hearing loss, damage to outer hair cell function must be demonstrated. Measurements of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion products (DPOAE) allow clinicians to investigate objectively the cochlear amplification process. In this prospective study, 50 persons with suspected occupational hearing losses were tested with pure-tone and speech audiometry. Additionally, TEOAE and DPAOE were determined. Significant linear correlations were observed when comparing hearing thresholds and speech discriminations with evoked emissions. Three groups

Today's audiological functional diagnostics is based on a stock of hearing tests, whose large number takes account of the variety of malfunctions of a complex sensory organ system and the necessity to examine it in a differentiated manner and at any age of life. The objective is to identify nature and origin of the hearing loss and to quantify its extent as far as necessary to dispose of the information needed to initiate the adequate medical (conservative or operational) treatment or the provision with technical hearing aids or prostheses. Moreover, audiometry provides the basis for the asses

Retrocochlear lesions cause typical patterns of hearing loss as detailed in special audiometric tests. Such losses, however, may be temporary deficits. Indeed, return to near normalcy following severely depressed auditory function is documented in this article. Conservative surgery on lesions influencing eighth nerve function should be considered. This is not to say that neoplasia can be partially removed, but rather that when tumors can be resected while preserving the cochlear nerve, this should be done inasmuch as good hearing levels may be restored.

Hearing impairment is one of the most common chief complaints in newly diagnosed nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, but baseline audiometric assessments are seldom reported. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of hearing impairment in this population through comprehensive audiometric testing and analyse the associated factors. A cohort of 187 newly diagnosed NPC patients were recruited from three hospitals. Pre-treatment comprehensive audiometric assessments, including pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry, Eustachian tube function tests and distortion product otoacoustic emission

Introduction There are some discrepancies in the literature about the influence of vitiligo on auditory functions. According to some authors, vitiligo influences hearing, whereas others question such influence. Therefore, we conducted a study to evaluate audiological functions in vitiligo patients. Objectives To determine the effect of vitiligo on auditory functions. Methods A hospital-based observational study was done from January 2017 to July 2017. Clinically diagnosed cases of vitiligo were enrolled for the study. A complete otological examination was conducted in all patients. Results

In assessing children with suspected hearing loss, audiologists are faced with the challenge of attempting to describe auditory function in a population that presents with a wide range developmental levels and abilities. Fortunately, there are a number of behavioral and physiologic tools available for the evaluation of auditory sensitivity and system integrity in children of all ages and developmental abilities. As powerful as many of these tools may be, however, it is important that the diagnosis of hearing loss be based on the outcome of independent measures of auditory function, which serve

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is designed to restore useful auditory sensations in patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2). The implantation is usually performed at the time of tumor removal in patients who do not undergo radiation treatment. The authors evaluated the performance of ABIs in three patients with NF2 in whom vestibular schwannoma continued to grow after radiation treatment. These three patients with NF2 received a 21-channel ABI; a translabyrinthine approach was used for both the tumor removal and the ABI placement. The interval between radiosurgery and the tumor remo

The purpose of the present study was to describe the audiological and vestibular deficit in patients presumed to suffer from chronic impairment of the blood supply to the labyrinth. Thirty-nine subjects affected by various pathologies often impairing systemic blood circulation, which also presented labyrinthine damage of unclear origin, were evaluated for a possible relationship between these two conditions. At the time of this study 80 per cent of the subjects showed also a certain degree of increased blood viscosity. The most common finding in the group was slow and progressive bilateral sen

Shingle sawyers are exposed to noise predominantly from the left side. This study examined the asymmetry in hearing loss among shingle sawyers and its possible relation to the difference in noise exposure to the two ears. The results suggest that the lateral difference in noise exposure in industry, even in the obvious case of a shingle sawyer, is small. The resulting asymmetrical noise-induced hearing loss is also relatively small. Therefore, significant asymmetry in hearing loss in this type of occupation should be viewed with caution. Special tests and medical examination should be undertak

In an attempt to develop an animal model of immune mediated Meniere's disease, we have injected lipopolysaccharide (LPS) directly into scala media of guinea pigs and monitored functional and morphological changes over a period of 6 weeks. Depending on the concentration of LPS, changes ranged from moderate-to-severe hearing loss and endolymphatic hydrops with minimal cellular infiltrate or fibrosis, to dense cellular infiltration that filled the scalae. Interestingly, higher concentrations of LPS not only induced severe cellular infiltration, hydrops, and hearing loss, but also a substantial en

In humans, functional evidence based on recording cochlear microphonic, auditory nerve, and brain stem responses has shown that the site of lesion in hearing loss following neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is the auditory nerve (with sparing of the hair cells). Structural damage to the central nervous system (CNS) including the cochlear nuclei has been demonstrated in adult, homozygous Gunn rats which develop hyperbilirubinemia shortly after birth. In an attempt to use the Gunn rat as an experimental model for bilirubin-induced CNS damage, auditory nerve and brain stem responses (ABR) were recorded

Forward- and simultaneous-masked thresholds were measured at 0.5 and 2.0 kHz in bandpass maskers as a function of masker bandwidth and in a broadband masker with the goal of estimating psychophysical suppression. Suppression was operationally defined in two ways: (1) as a change in forward-masked threshold as a function of masker bandwidth, and (2) as a change in effective masker level with increased masker bandwidth, taking into account the nonlinear growth of forward masking. Subjects were younger adults with normal hearing and older adults with cochlear hearing loss. Thresholds decreased as

Auditory function was studied before and after surgery in 143 consecutive patients who were operated on for hemifacial spasm by microvascular decompression of the intracranial portion of the facial nerve. The acoustic middle ear reflex was abnormal preoperatively in 41% of the patients, indicating that the vascular abnormalities that caused the hemifacial spasm also affected the auditory nerve. Three patients suffered a profound hearing loss in the ear on the operated side, and one lost hearing function totally. In addition, 24 patients had a moderate elevation in the pure-tone threshold at on

Current estimates suggest that nearly half a billion people worldwide are affected by hearing loss. Because of the major psychological, social, economic, and health ramifications, considerable efforts have been invested in identifying the genes and molecular pathways involved in hearing loss, whether genetic or environmental, to promote prevention, improve rehabilitation, and develop therapeutics. Genomic sequencing technologies have led to the discovery of genes associated with hearing loss. Studies of the transcriptome and epigenome of the inner ear have characterized key regulators and path

IMPORTANCE: In the United States, the population of individuals older than 80 years is expected to double in the next 40 years. Cardiovascular comorbidities are prevalent in this older old population, and their relationship with hearing loss has not been well characterized.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related risk factors with auditory function among the older old (>80 years).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Audiological data and medical records from 2001 through 2014 of 433 patients aged 80 to 106 years at an academic medical center were anal

Objectives: Observational studies have shown that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with an increased risk of hearing impairment. However, causality remains unclear, including with respect to lung function. This study aimed to investigate the associations of lung function and COPD with hearing impairment in the UK Biobank and confirm potential causalities using Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using logistic regression models in a subsample of the UK Biobank. Two-sample MR analyses were performed on summary statistics for f

Mutations in mitochondrial 12S rRNA (MT-RNR1) are the important causes of sensorineural hearing loss. Of these mutations, the homoplasmic m.1555A>G or m.1494C>T mutation in the highly conserved A-site of MT-RNR1 gene has been found to be associated with both aminoglycoside-induced and non-syndromic hearing loss in many families worldwide. Since the m.1555A>G and m.1494C>T mutations are sensitive to ototoxic drugs, therefore, screening for the presence of these mutations is important for early diagnosis and prevention of deafness. For this purpose, we recently developed a novel allele-specific
