Resting Heart Rate and Incident CKD Among Individuals With CKD Risk Factors.

AIM: Elevated resting heart rate has been associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events. However, its association with the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among individuals with established CKD risk factors under clinical care remains uncertain. METHODS: We analysed 1210 participants with one or more CKD risk factors, an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, and no proteinuria at baseline, enrolled in the Fukushima Cohort Study, to evaluate the association between baseline resting heart rate and new-onset CKD. Participa…

Reduced heart rate variability predicts severe intraventricular haemorrhage in extremely preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) is a serious complication of extreme prematurity. Reduced heart rate variability (HRV) has been linked to severe IVH (sIVH). This study aimed to identify HRV metrics best predictive of sIVH. METHODS: This prospective cohort study used ECG traces of preterm infants (≤ 28 weeks) collected in the first week of life. The earliest five 2 h noise-free ECG segments were processed in MATLAB, extracting eight metrics of HRV spanning the time, frequency and non-linear domains: SDRRI, HF, LF, VLF, SD1, SD2, alpha1 and alpha2. Group differences were tested u…

Heart rate variability as a digital biomarker for frailty in cardiovascular patients.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a syndrome associated with age-related impairments in multiple organ systems, of which the autonomic nervous system plays a fundamental role. Measurement of heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive method to evaluate the autonomic activity and gain insights into cardiovascular health and potentially, frailty. A few small studies have explored the relationship between HRV and frailty, with promising but conflicting results. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between HRV and frailty among adult patients with cardiovascular disease. DESIGN: A cross-sectional…

Resting Heart Rate and Risk of Incident Venous Thromboembolism: The Tromsø Study.

While resting heart rate (RHR) is associated with multiple diseases, conflicting information exists on the association between RHR and venous thromboembolism (VTE). We, therefore, aimed to investigate the association between RHR and risk of VTE in a population-based cohort.Participants (n = 36,395) were followed from inclusion in the Tromsø 4 to 7 surveys (1994-2016) throughout 2020. RHR was measured in beats per minute (bpm) at each survey (repeated measurements for those attending several surveys). All first-time VTEs during follow-up were recorded. Hazard ratios (HR) for VTE with 95% confid…

Trauma-analogue symptom variability predicted by inhibitory control and peritraumatic heart rate.

The reasons why some individuals who experience trauma develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while others do not remain poorly understood, highlighting the complex interplay of encoding-related and intrapersonal factors. This study aimed to examine factors predicting variability in trauma-related symptom development. Using a trauma film paradigm in a healthy sample (N = 32), we investigated how inhibitory control and peritraumatic responses relate to the development of intrusive memories and self-assessed event impact. Peritraumatic heart rate was associated with more frequent, vivid, …

Exercise and Heart Rate Variability in Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is a prevalent condition associated with significant disability. Emerging evidence suggests that autonomic dysfunction, reflected by heart rate variability (HRV), may play a role in the pathophysiology of CMP and could be responsive to exercise interventions. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of exercise on HRV in persons with CMP. METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases from database inception until June 15, 2024. Eligible studies included those examining exercise interven…

L-Type Cav1.3 and HCN Channels Mediate Heart Rate Acceleration by Catecholamines.

BACKGROUND: The ionic mechanism by which catecholamines increase the heart rate is incompletely understood. In this study, we have assessed the roles of sinoatrial node L-type Cav1.3 (α1D) Ca2+ channels, phosphorylation of L-type channel regulatory partner protein Rad (Ras-related RGK GTP-binding protein), and cAMP-dependent regulation of hyperpolarization-activated HCN (hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated) channels. METHODS: We studied β-adrenergic regulation of heart rate and sinoatrial pacemaker activity in mice lacking Cav1.3 channels and in mice expressing dihydropyridine…

Sleep in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: An Exploratory Investigation of Heart Rate Variability.

Introduction: The monitoring of autonomic nervous balance during childhood remains underexplored. However, heart rate variability (HRV) is widely recognized as a biomarker of health risk across the lifespan. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), a group of chronic inflammatory joint disorders, is associated with persistent inflammation and pain, both of which contribute to increased cardiovascular risk, commonly linked to reduced HRV. Among HRV parameters, very-low frequency (VLF) components have been associated with physiological recovery processes. This study aimed to assess HRV during sleep …

Relationships Between Adiposity Measures and Heart Rate Variability in Children and Adolescents.

Understanding relationships between specific measures of adiposity and heart rate variability (HRV) allows for better understanding obesity as a risk factor for cardiovascular and autonomic dysfunction. We sought to examine associations between specific adiposity depots and cardiovascular autonomic function assessed via HRV among children and adolescents. We performed a secondary cross-sectional analysis of a previously completed study of 8-17-year-olds (n = 325; 12.4 ± 2.7 years). Adiposity was assessed via dual x-ray absorptiometry. Resting HRV measures included root mean square of successiv…

II - Evaluation of Autonomic Control of Heart Rate in Various Clinical Conditions.

Through the comparison of responses of normal volunteers, assessment of autonomic function under abnormal clinical conditions focused on the detection of dysautonomia involving both the parasympathetic and adrenergic limbs in patients with Chagas heart disease, post-cardiac surgery, chronic heart failure, mitral valve prolapse, and hyperthyroidism. In particular, the autonomic impairment observed in Chagas disease patients involved predominantly the parasympathetic control of heart rate at the sinus node level, and the adrenergic innervation at the myocardial ventricular level. The autonomic d…

Heart rate dynamics for cognitive load estimation in a driving simulation task.

Cognitive load (CL) is one of the leading factors moderating states and performance among drivers. Heavily increased CL may contribute to the development of mental stress. Averaged heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) indices are shown to reflect CL levels in different tasks. The aim of this large-scale study was to explore how accurately HR and HRV metrics can differentiate between varying CL conditions during driving. Participants (N = 892, 44% female, from 18 to 79 years old) performed simulated driving in highway and urban scenarios. The n-back task was used as a mental distrac…

Heart rate variability measurement and influencing factors: Towards the standardization of methodology.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is widely recognized as an effective and valuable tool for evaluating cardiac autonomic modulation. However, various factors can influence HRV before and during assessment, complicating the interpretation and comparability of results. This review outlines the different factors affecting HRV and underscores the importance of considering them to ensure consistent and reliable HRV outcomes. Key influencing factors are categorized into physiological (e.g., age, gender, genetics), lifestyle (e.g., physical activity, alcohol use, smoking, drugs, diet), environmental (e.g…

Anthropometric Predictors of Heart Rate Variability in Overweight Individuals: A Comparative Study.

Introduction The autonomic nervous system is crucial in regulating cardiovascular function. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, a non-invasive method to assess autonomic function, reflects the beat-to-beat variations in heart rate and provides insights into the dynamic interplay between sympathetic and parasympathetic influences on the cardiovascular system. In this study, we aimed to find the HRV parameters in overweight individuals by comparing different anthropometric parameters, including body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat (%BF), waist circumference (WC), and waist-hip ratio (WH…
