The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between heel BMD, risk factors for osteoporosis, falls history, and the Jarman Underprivileged Area Score in an older community population. From the general practice register, 1,187 women (mean age 70, range 60 to 94) were recruited. BMD of the heel was measured using the GE Lunar PIXI densitometer. BACKGROUND: Defects in the weight-bearing heel or forefoot are commonly derived from chronic wounds, acute trauma, or tumor excision. BACKGROUND: Painful procedures are unavoidable in the medical care of preterm babies. The unpleasant experience during the neonatal period may contribute to hyperalgesia and poor neurodevelopment outcome later. In 50 patients (72 clubfeet), the posterior tibial tendon was excised during complete soft tissue clubfoot release. The end results after an average of 3 years were graded as follows: 55.5% excellent, 29.3% good, 8.3% fair, and 6.9% poor. Heel varus and forefoot adduction were the main causes for recurrence. Heel valgus occurred in one foot. Excision of the posterior tibial tendon is safe, does not lead to overcorrection, and may prevent further scarring created when the tendon is lengthened.

A retrospective study was conducted in order to investigate the relation between increased plantar pressure and ulcers in the diabetic foot and contribute more information on this subject. Maximal plantar pressure (MPP) is reported on various areas of the plantar aspects of the feet in 328 diabetic patients and 75 healthy subjects. Anterior transfer of the long toe flexors combined with the Baker procedure, or heel cord lengthening was used to correct equinus foot deformity in 21 patients with cerebral palsy. In more than two-thirds of the cases, heel-to-ball gait became possible. There were no significant recurrences that required re-operation. There were no complications caused by loss of original function in the long toe flexors even in younger patients. Excellent and good results were seen in 57.1% of the patients according to the overall results.

In correcting foot deformities the author observed a constant relationship between the forefoot and the hindfoot. If the forefoot is adducted, the heel automatically goes into the varus position. On the other hand, abduction of the forefoot will result in a valgus position of the heel. Precalcaneal congenital fibrolipomatous hamartomas are rare benign lesions that present in infancy. Lesions typically appear as unilateral or bilateral skin-colored asymptomatic subcutaneous nodules on the precalcaneal plantar heel. Diagnosis is clinical, and operative intervention is not indicated unless lesions are symptomatic. We report two cases of subcutaneous plantar nodules diagnosed as precalcaneal congenital fibrolipomatous hamartomas. The aim is to raise awareness of this rare diagnosis and emphasize its benign nature and conservative management.
