The potential of geographical information systems and remote sensing in the epidemiology and control of human helminth infections.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies are being used increasingly to study the spatial and temporal patterns of infectious diseases. For helminth infections, however, such applications have only recently begun despite the recognition that infection distribution patterns in endemic areas may have profound effects on parasite population dynamics and therefore the design and implementation of successful control programmes. Here, we review the early applications of these technologies to the major human helminths (geohelminths, schistosomes and the major lymphati

Helminth and arthropod parasites of indigenous goats in the northern Transvaal.

Helminth and arthropod parasites of 60 female indigenous goats of three age groups on a farm in the northern Transvaal were collected, identified and counted. Anoplocephalid tapeworms were present in the two younger groups of goats, while larvae of Taenia hydatigena were recovered from all three groups. Eight species and two genera of nematodes were found in the youngest goats, five species and three genera in the middle group and six species and two genera in the oldest goats. Strongyloides papillosus was the most numerous and most prevalent nematode in the youngest goats, while Haemonchus co

The epidemiological implications of a multiple-infection approach to the control of human helminth infections.

It has been suggested that there is economic advantage in using a single community therapy programme to deliver multiple treatments against several parasitic infections. This preliminary study estimates the occurrence of concurrent helminth infection in Africa and Brazil to determine whether such an approach is justified epidemiologically. The results indicate that the occurrence of geohelminthiasis with schistosomiasis is sufficiently frequent in some areas of both Africa and Brazil for a combined approach to control to be appropriate, but that the relatively low frequency of occurrence of on…

[The incidence of intestinal helminths in Samsun district].

17954 stool specimens that were brought to the Microbiology department of Ondokuzmayis University were investigated in regard to the intestinal helminth eggs and the incidence was found to be 16% and 62% of them being Ascaris lumbricoides. The incidence of the intestinal helminth which was %21.08 in 1978 was found to be decreased to %10.45 in 1984.

Treatment of human and livestock helminth infections in a mobile pastoralist setting at Lake Chad: Attitudes to health and analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients of locally available anthelminthic drugs.

Mobile pastoralists face challenges in accessing quality health care and medication for managing human and animal diseases. We determined livestock disease priorities, health seeking behaviour of people bearing helminthiases and - placing particular emphasis on trematode infections - treatment strategies and outcome satisfaction among mobile pastoralists of four ethnic groups in the Lake Chad area using focus group discussions. People suffering from schistosomiasis were interviewed about symptoms, health seeking behaviour and their satisfaction with respect to the provided treatment. Anthelmin

[Prolactin as a modulator of antiparasitic immunity].

Prolactin (PRL) is a polypeptide hormone of the pituitary origin, that expresses over 300 separate biological activities, including its involvement in the regulation of immune functions. The hormone's immune capacities are related, among others, to comitogenic activity, prevention of immune cell apoptosis, stimulation of interleukins and antibodies production. Prolactin acts as a potent positive modulator of immunity to some protozoan parasites. It is well established that the hormone stimulates IFN-gamma and many other TH1-type cytokines production during Toxoplasma gondii, Leishmania sp. and

Persistence of a recurrent group of intestinal helminth species in a coyote population from southern Texas.

The persistence and interrelationships of a recurrent group of intestinal helminth species in a coyote population from southern Texas were determined; data were collected at 4-yr intervals (1979, 1983, and 1987). The a priori expectation was that a defined recurrent group of helminth species persisted over time and that the respective helminth species were stable in terms of their abundances. The Fager index and subsequent recurrent group analysis indicated a small group of taxonomically unrelated recurring species of helminths that always demonstrated affinities with each other and occasional

Production responses to internal parasite control in dairy cattle.

A significant increase in milk production, averaging 164 litres per cow per lactation (a 4.8% increase), was seen after cows infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, paramphistomes and Fasciola hepatica were treated with broad-spectrum anthelmintics. Three hundred and ninety pairs of cows from eight herds with year-round calving were studied. One cow in each matched pair was given 7.5 mg/kg fenbendazole, 7.5 mg/kg levamisole hydrochloride and 15 mg/kg oxyclozanide in March, May and August of one year; the other cow in the pair received no anthelmintic. The number of nematode and trematode egg

Effects of parasitic infestation on the productivity of alpacas (Lama pacos).

A trial was carried out in alpacas (Lama pacos) to determine the economic benefit of controlling both external and internal parasites using ivermectin (Ivomec, Merck, Sharpe and Dohme). After four months the treated male alpacas had gained on average 3.1 kg more than the untreated males and their fleece weighed 0.36 kg more. Treated females gained 1.9 kg more than the controls but their fleece weighed 0.03 kg less. This resulted in a net financial benefit to the farmer of US$3.54 for each male alpaca and US$1.36 for each female.

Studies on the prevalence of gastro-intestinal helminths of dogs in Calabar, Nigeria.

The results of investigational study to determine the prevalence of gastro-intestinal helminths of dogs in Calabar, Nigeria with particular emphasis on the effects of sex and age of the animals on the occurrence of these endoparasites are presented. Of a total of 254 dogs sampled using saturated brime solution floatation method and formalin-ether sedimentation method, 223 (86.97%) were infected. A breakdown of the number of parasitized dogs shows that 180 (70.86%) were positive for Ancylostoma caninum, 68 (26.77%) for Toxocara canis, 38 (14.96%) for Strongyloides stercoralis, 21 (8.26%) for To
