Sexual minority bariatric patients: preliminary examination of eating behaviors, anxiety, and depression.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in obesity care and bariatric surgery persist among patients of diverse identities. However, little is known about sexual minority (SM) bariatric patients. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to describe, in a preliminary fashion, sexual orientation variables of outness, self-esteem, and perceived discrimination among a sample of SM patients pursuing bariatric surgery. The study also sought to compare SM and heterosexual bariatric candidates on measures of eating behaviors, anxiety, and depression. SETTING: Academic medical center in the United States. METHODS: Data were c

Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration and Victimization Among Young Adult Sexual Minorities.

CONTEXT: Intimate partner violence (IPV) among sexual minority young adults has been understudied, and victimization and perpetration estimates are needed. METHODS: Data on 13,653 women and men aged 24-32 who participated in Wave 4 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were used to examine associations between sexual orientation and IPV perpetration and victimization in respondents' current or most recent relationship. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify associations between respondent characteristics and three IPV categories (physical violence, threa

Biological and Behavioral Factors Associated With Positive Chlamydia Retests.

BACKGROUND: Repeat chlamydia detection after treatment is common, and there is concern that treatment failure may be a cause. METHODS: Within a randomized trial, we established a prospective cohort of 600 participants with anogenital chlamydia diagnoses (200 each of women, heterosexual men, and men who have sex with men [MSM]). Participants were invited for repeat testing at 3 months and to complete a behavioral survey at 4 months. Positive samples were analyzed for organism DNA load and genovar. We estimated repeat chlamydia positivity, reinfection and treatment failure rates, and investigat

Sexual Behaviors and Partner Characteristics by Sexual Identity Among Adolescent Girls.

PURPOSE: Data suggest that lesbian and bisexual adolescents engage in risky sexual behaviors at higher rates than heterosexual girls. Whether these findings also apply to girls of other sexual identities is less well understood. Potential differences in risky sexual behaviors reported by lesbian versus bisexual adolescents are also underreported in the literature. METHODS: Data were collected online in 2010-2011 among 2,823 girls, aged 13-18 years, in the United States. Multinomial logistic regression was used to quantify comparisons of sexual behaviors between (1) lesbian; (2) bisexual; and

Time-Site Survey of Substance Use, Sexual Behaviours, and HIV-Testing Practices among Women Attending Social Venues in Prague.

AIM: The rates of HIV acquired through heterosexual contact are increasing in the Czech Republic. This study explored potential HIV risk associa-tions with alcohol, illicit drugs and sexual behaviours among adults from a community-based sample attending gay- and non-gay venues in Prague. METHODS: Women attending bars, cafes and beer gardens in central Prague responded to the self-administered, time-site survey. Alcohol use was measured by the AUDIT-C and CAGE questionnaires. Sexual network structuring identified number, gender and coital frequency with current and recent sexual partners. Stat

Understanding trends in genital Chlamydia trachomatis can benefit from enhanced surveillance: findings from Australia.

OBJECTIVES: To determine trends and correlates of chlamydia positivity among young heterosexuals attending Australian sexual health services and to compare these with population-based notification data. METHODS: Data from 18 sexual health services and the national notification scheme were analysed. A χ2 test assessed trends in chlamydia positivity among young heterosexuals tested from 2006 to 2010, and logistic regression was used to determine correlates of positivity. Nucleic acid amplification tests were used throughout the study period. RESULTS: During 2006-2010, 64 588 heterosexuals aged

Trends in, and determinants of, HIV testing at genitourinary medicine clinics and general practice in England, 1990-2000.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the trends in and determinants of HIV testing and positivity at genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics and in general practice (GP) in England between 1990 and 2000. METHODS: Data on all first HIV specimens from GUM and GP clinics and tested at seven sentinel laboratories were related to key demographic, clinical, and behavioural variables. RESULTS: During the observation period, 202 892 eligible first HIV tests were reported. 90% (182 746) of specimens were from GUM clinics, of which 55% were from heterosexuals, 12% from men who have sex with men (MSM), and 3% from inj

Enhanced surveillance of HIV infections in New Zealand, 1996-1998.

AIM: To improve understanding of the HIV epidemic in New Zealand through use of an enhanced voluntary reporting system for new diagnoses of HIV. METHODS: Routine reporting of new HIV diagnoses by the two laboratories that perform confirmatory HIV antibody testing, to the Department of Health and later to the AIDS Epidemiology Group, has been in place since 1985. From January 1996, this was supplemented by a questionnaire about demographic characteristics and circumstances of HIV exposure sent to clinicians requesting the HIV test. RESULTS: From January 1996 to December 1998, 260 new diagnose

Gender identity and sexual orientation affect health care satisfaction, but not utilization, in persons with Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the association between gender identity and sexual orientation on health care utilization in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS), as well as satisfaction with their doctor and comfort discussing sexual health with their doctor. METHODS: We surveyed participants from the North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis (NARCOMS) Registry regarding their gender identity and sexual orientation in 2017. Participants also reported their sociodemographic characteristics, disability status, health behaviors and health care utilization, including whether any h

Impact of Sexual Orientation Identity on Medical Morbidities in Male-to-Female Transgender Patients.

PURPOSE: We aim to describe the relationship between sexual orientation identity and medical morbidities in a large sample of male-to-female (MTF) transgender patients. METHODS: We reviewed medical records of patients presenting for MTF sex reassignment surgery (SRS) by a single, high-volume surgeon from 2011 to 2015. Sexual attraction to men (heterosexual), women (lesbian), or both (bisexual) was asked of each patient. We examined 16 medical morbidities for this analysis. RESULTS: During the study period, 330 MTF transgender patients presented for SRS. The average age at the time of surgery

Exploring Sexual Orientation Disparities Regarding the Interplay of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Self-Reported Diabetes Status, and Depression Among Adults in the United States.

Previous research has revealed a strong link between the experience of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and diabetes in adulthood. Moreover, research has shown that sexual minorities (SM) are exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) (i.e. CSA) and experience depression at higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts. Thus, it is imperative to further investigate the role of depression and the differential associations of exposure to ACEs with diabetes prevalence by sexual orientation. We explored sexual orientation disparities regarding the relationship between CSA and diabetes and exa

Examining the differential protective effects of women's spirituality and religiosity on alcohol and marijuana use by sexual identity.

The current study explored how religiosity and spirituality may differentially influence substance use by sexual identity based on a sample of adult sexual minority women (SMW; n = 437 lesbian; n = 323 bisexual) relative to a heterosexual comparison sample (n = 636). We examined three questions: (1) whether spirituality was differentially associated with alcohol and marijuana use by sexual identity; (2) whether religiosity was differentially associated with alcohol and marijuana use by sexual identity; (3) whether observed differences between spirituality or religiosity and substance use by se

Immunological study of condylomata acuminata in men infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

As condylomata acuminata often persist in individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), an immunohistological study of warts from infected men was undertaken to further knowledge about human papillomavirus persistence in this group. Using an indirect immunoperoxidase method and a panel of monoclonal antibodies, the phenotypes of cells were studied in cryostat sections of perianal or anal warts removed from 14 HIV-infected men (10 homosexual and 4 heterosexual) and from 16 non-infected men (10 homosexual and 6 heterosexual). Although the median numbers of CD1+, CD3+ and CD4+

Sexually transmitted diseases in hetero-, homo- and bisexual males in Copenhagen.

This study is a mapping of intestinal protozoal and pathogenic bacterial infections, and sexually transmitted urethral and anorectal infections among 365 consecutive male patients attending a veneric disease (VD) clinic in Copenhagen. The profile of diseases was strongly correlated to sexual life-style. Amoebiasis and giardiasis were found respectively in 31.9% and 13.8% of homosexuals. None of the heterosexuals had pathogenic protozoa. Protozoal infections were correlated to anilingus. Forty-five percent of the patients were infected in Denmark. Travelling to endemic areas was of no obvious i

Hepatitis B virus infection in patients attending a genitourinary medicine clinic: risk factors and vaccine coverage.

BACKGROUND: The hepatitis B virus (HBV) immunisation policy in the United Kingdom includes offering vaccines selectively to those at risk by sexual contact. Among genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic attenders, homosexual men are offered vaccine, but estimates of the vaccine uptake are required to monitor policy and estimate the possible impact on transmission; heterosexuals are not routinely offered vaccine, but this policy might change if the prevalence was found to be high. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of HBV infection and vaccine uptake among patients attending a GUM clinic. MET

Sexual identity and confidence in medicine: an analysis of national survey data.

The institution of medicine has at times been associated with the pathologisation of sexual minority individuals. Studies also show that sexual minority individuals sometimes encounter discrimination or hostility when interacting with medical professionals. The current study asks whether this results in a systematic lack of confidence in medicine among sexual minority groups, which could have consequences for these groups' utilisation of health care. Using nationally representative data from the US General Social Survey, the current study investigates whether gay, lesbian and bisexual individu

The contribution of male and female partners' substance use to sexual risks and STDs among African American HIV serodiscordant couples.

Growing evidence suggests that drug and alcohol use are fueling the heterosexual transmission of HIV among African Americans. This study aims to examine the relative contribution of drug and alcohol use of male and female partners to risks of heterosexual transmission of HIV among 535 African American HIV serodiscordant couples (N = 1,070 participants) who participated in an HIV prevention trial. Associations found between use of drugs and alcohol by one or both partners and sexual risk indicators varied by type of substance and whether male or female partner or both partners reported use. Health Promotion Opportunities for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People: Using Data From the New Zealand Health Survey.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Health inequity for sexual minority (lesbian, gay and bisexual) people compared with heterosexual people is well documented globally. However, limited local data have been used to inform health policy and practice. This project analysed data from the New Zealand Health Survey to determine areas of inequity in health behaviours and identify opportunities for health promotion action. METHODS: We used pooled data from six waves of the New Zealand Health Survey (from 2015/2016 to 2020/2021). The sample for analysis comprised 67 426 people aged 15 years and older, including 1224 s

Sexual orientation disparities in gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority (SM) individuals (e.g., those with same-sex attractions/partners or who identify as lesbian/gay/bisexual) experience a host of physical and mental health disparities. However, little is known about sexual orientation-related disparities in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP; gestational hypertension [gHTN] and preeclampsia). OBJECTIVE: To estimate disparities in GDM, gHTN and preeclampsia by sexual orientation. METHODS: We used data from the Nurses' Health Study II-a cohort of nurses across the US enrolled in 1989 at 2
