A 14-month-old, male German Shepherd dog was admitted with a six-week history of lameness and swelling of the right hindlimb. Clinical examination revealed polyarthritis, fever, petechiae and ecchymoses of the abdominal skin and prepuce. The haematology and blood chemistry were indicative of sepsis. Mediolateral radiographic views of both of the stifle joints revealed signs of bilateral articular capsule swelling. The radiographical, bacteriological and necropsy findings confirmed a diagnosis of septic polyarthritis due to infection with Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.

Monitoring the activity of the central nervous system with the 14C-2-deoxyglucose method of Sokoloff was utilized to explore the possibility to develop a model for the study of central nervous system reaction to peripheral trauma. Preliminary evidence indicates that the activation caused by tactile stimuli to one hindlimb nerve is that expected from earlier physiologic studies. However, an increase of stimulation intensity to recruit nociceptive (pain) fibers seems to abolish the changes, indicating that inhibitory systems have been activated.

A 2-year-old cat was presented with generalised muscle tremors and progressive fore- and hindlimb ataxia, 5 months after the initiation of chemotherapy for thymic lymphoma. The lymphoma was treated with combination chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisolone), which resulted in remission. The neurological signs progressed to paralysis and the cat subsequently died. On autopsy, multiple meningiomas were diagnosed, which is an unusual finding. It is possible that the lymphoma chemotherapy resulted in the development of the multiple meningiomas as secondary malignancies.

A two-year-old female alpaca suddenly became lame on its right hindlimb. Eight days later clinical and radiographic examinations showed that the patella had become temporarily fixed within the supratrochlear notch of the femur. Under general anaesthesia an abrasion trochleoplasty followed by fascial imbrication was carried out. After two weeks in supporting slings, the animal put full weight on the leg, and six months after the surgery it showed no signs of lameness or recurrence of the upward fixation.

Verrucous pastern dermatitis is a progressive inflammatory skin disease commonly involving the palmar or plantar aspects of the pasterns of horses. There are no reports of successful surgical treatment for multifocal circumscribed verrucous masses in the chronic stages of verrucous pastern dermatitis. A combination of sharp dissection and electrocautery was used to resect numerous multifocal circumscribed verrucous masses from the distal hindlimb of an 11-year-old gelding draught horse. There was no evidence of significant regrowth or complications at a 24 month postoperative examination.

An 8-month-old male Pekingese was admitted with a 1-month history of right hindlimb lameness and crepitation in the right coxofemoral joint. There was radiographic evidence of a focus of subchondral osteolysis of the right femoral head. The tentative diagnosis was avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The problem was corrected by femoral head ostectomy. Gross and microscopic examination of the femoral head resulted in a diagnosis of osteochondritis dissecans. Osteochondritis dissecans is an uncommon diagnosis both in small breeds of dogs and in the coxofemoral joint.

Congenital malformations may occur during early embryogenesis in cases of genetic abnormalities or various environmental factors. Affected subjects most often have only one or 2 abnormalities; subjects rarely have several unrelated congenital defects. A 5-year-old male Siberian husky bred outdoor in Tokyo had a swollen paw with interdigital granulomatous lesions in the left hindlimb. The dog had no apparent pulmonary or gastrointestinal involvement. Histopathological analysis of the skin lesions demonstrated yeast-like organisms predominantly within macrophages. Sequence analysis of fungal ribosome RNA gene isolated from a paraffin sample revealed a 100% homology with the teleomorph of Histoplasma capsulatum. The present case may support the concept of primary cutaneous canine histoplasmosis as an endemic phenotype recognized in Japan.

Hindlimb condemnations occurred in 0-11 per cent (194/173,580) of all cattle at a large Scottish slaughterhouse over a 22-month period. Cows and bulls were more frequently involved than steers or heifers. Gross pathology, studied in 42 cattle (21 per cent of the total condemned), revealed osteoarthritis of the stifle and hip respectively in 19 and 16 cases. The traumatic lesions included meniscal damage, anterior and other ligamentous rupture. The UK loss from such condemnation is estimated at over pounds200,000 in January 1977.

A case of peripheral arterial tumor embolization in a cat is described. The cat presented with signs of aortic thromboembolism, including decreased peripheral pulse quality, pallor, and coolness of the distal limbs, as well as proprioceptive deficits. Thoracic radiographs revealed a cavitary lung mass; echocardiography was unremarkable. Cytologic evaluation of aspirates of the mass suggested malignancy.
