Proteomics approach to the study of cattle tick adaptation to white tailed deer.

Cattle ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, are a serious threat to animal health and production. Some ticks feed on a single host species while others such as R. microplus infest multiple hosts. White tailed deer (WTD) play a role in the maintenance and expansion of cattle tick populations. However, cattle ticks fed on WTD show lower weight and reproductive performance when compared to ticks fed on cattle, suggesting the existence of host factors that affect tick feeding and reproduction. To elucidate these factors, a proteomics approach was used to characterize tick and host proteins

Fitness cost of Litomosoides sigmodontis filarial infection in mite vectors; implications of infected haematophagous arthropod excretory products in host-vector interactions.

Filariae are a leading cause of infections which are responsible for serious dermatological, ocular, and vascular lesions. Infective third stage larvae (L3) are transmitted through the bite of a haematophagous vector. Litomosoides sigmodontis is a well-established model of filariasis in the mouse, with the vector being the mite Ornithonyssus bacoti. The aim of the study was to analyse the filarial infection in mites to determine the consequences of filarial infection in the blood-feeding and the reproduction of mites as well as in the regulation of vector-induced inflammation in the mouse skin

Experimental infections of Orchitophrya stellarum (Scuticociliata) in American blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and fiddler crabs (Uca minax).

Outbreaks of an unidentified ciliate have occurred on several occasions in blue crabs from Chesapeake Bay held during winter months in flow-through systems. The parasite was initially thought to be Mesanophrys chesapeakensis, but molecular analysis identified it as Orchitophyra stellarum, a facultative parasite of sea stars (Asteroidea). We investigated the host-parasite association of O. stellarum in the blue crab host. Crabs were inoculated with the ciliate, or they were held in bath exposures after experimentally induced autotomy of limbs in order to determine potential mechanisms for infec

Host susceptibility is altered by light intensity after exposure to parasites.

Translating research advances to natural systems using experimental laboratory studies is often difficult because of the variability between the natural environment and experimental conditions. Because environmental conditions have a large effect on an organism's physiology, responses to stressors like nutrient limitation, temperature, oxygen deprivation, predation, and parasite/pathogen infection are likely to be context dependent. Therefore, it is essential to examine the impact the study environment has on the experimental outcome. Here, we explored the effect of light exposure on susceptib

[Nosoareas of clonorchiasis in the Primorye Territory].

The mammalian liver parasite (Clonorchis sinensis flukes) has spread in the Primorye Territory. The areas of the first intermediate hosts for the parasite mollusks of the genus Parafossarulus have been found to recently become wider south-western predominantly due to lotus acclimatization, resulting in the expansion of a parasite habitation area. The intensity of newly formed foci of clonorchiasis is an order of magnitude greater than that of natural ones and they are a higher hazard since they have formed in the recreation areas used by the population for rest and fishing. The carp is the sec

History and prospects of Coxiella burnetii research.

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, is the only known intracellular pathogenic bacterium that replicates within the acidic, degradative confines of a eukaryotic phagolysosome. It appears that the bacterium nullifies or thwarts the toxic elements of this vacuole and evades both innate and adaptive immune responses. C. burnetii is ubiquitous in its geographic distribution with the disease prevalence more widespread than previously considered. Recent molecular and cell biological advances, along with improved instrumentation, have provided unique insight into the host-parasite inte

Laboratory virulence and orchard efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes against the lesser peachtree borer (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae).

The lesser peachtree borer, Synanthedon pictipes (Grote & Robinson) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), is indigenous to eastern North America. It is a pest of commercially grown Prunus spp., especially to southeastern peach orchards where earlier regulatory changes affected pesticide use on peach leading to increased S. pictipes damage. Pest management practices are now having a positive effect toward control of this pest, but cost-competitive biological control solutions that promote environmental stewardship are needed. Here, we tested four Steinernema species and five Heterorhabditis species of entom

Drug delivery strategies for therapy of visceral leishmaniasis.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the most overwhelming type of leishmaniasis associated with the poverty of developing countries and usually mortal if untreated. Most of the conventionally used dosage forms offer us the shortcomings of toxic side effects and emergence of drug resistance. Several efforts have been made to overcome the barriers involved in the treatment of VL. Colloidal carriers extensively represent the drug delivery systems (DDSs) for intracellular localization of antileishmanial compounds in macrophage-rich organs such as liver, spleen and bone marrow.

Fleshflies in the flesh: epidemiology, population genetics and control of outbreaks of traumatic myiasis in the Mediterranean Basin.

Although the damaging effects on healthy tissues of its developing larvae were first described in 1770, the fleshfly Wohlfahrtia magnifica remains a serious pest for the livestock industry. Wohlfahrtiosis, the severe myiasis caused by this fly, is a grave problem in terms of both the animal welfare and economic loss. This review highlights important aspects of the biology, pest status, epidemiology, population genetic structure, economics and control of W. magnifica and wohlfahrtiosis, with an emphasis on recent outbreaks in Greece and Morocco and fly population dynamics in the Mediterranean B

Veterinary vaccines against Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxoplasma gondii has a very wide intermediate host range and is thought to be able to infect all warm blooded animals. The parasite causes a spectrum of different diseases and clinical symptoms within the intermediate hosts and following infection most animals develop adaptive humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. The development of protective immunity to T. gondii following natural infection in many host species has led researchers to look at vaccination as a strategy to control disease, parasite multiplication and establishment in animal hosts. A range of different veterinary vaccines

Differential host utilisation by different life history stages of the fish ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus (Crustacea: Branchiura).

In this study we examine differences in the occurrence of life history stages of the destructive fish ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus (L., 1758) on eight fish species (stickleback, rudd, roach, gudgeon, bream, tench, crucian carp and common carp) sampled from a mixed-species recreational fishing lake on nine occasions during late spring and summer. Total numbers ofA. foliaceus, as well as the number of larval, juvenile and adult parasite stages, from each fish were recorded along with the fish species. Lice generally exhibited an aggregated distribution approximating a negative binomial distrib

Effects of rootstock and flushing on the incidence of three insects on 'Clementine de Nules' citrus trees.

We evaluated the influence of six different citrus rootstocks on the incidence of the citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), and the aphid species, Aphis gossypii Glover and A. spiraecola Patch (Hemiptera: Aphididae), on 'Clementine de Nules' trees (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.). Sampling was conducted during 2005 and 2006 in a grove of 3-yr-old trees in southern Spain with six rootstocks arranged in a completely randomized block design. Incidence (i.e., degree of infestation) and availability of resources for herbivores were assessed bi-weekly, and

Interspecific antagonism and virulence in hosts exposed to two parasite species.

Co-infection of host organisms by multiple parasite species has evolutionary consequences for all participants in the symbiosis. In this study, we co-exposed aquatic-snails (Biomphalaria glabrata) to two of their trematode parasites, Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma caproni. In co-exposed snails, E. caproni prevalence was 63% compared to only 23% for S. mansoni. Co-exposed E. caproni-infected snails exhibited reduced fecundity, higher mortality, and higher parasite reproduction (higher virulence) compared to hosts exposed to echinostomes alone. Conversely, co-exposed S. mansoni-infected sna

Improved dry-fleshed sweetpotato genotypes resistant to insect pests.

Thirty-five mostly dry-fleshed sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. (Convolvulaceae), genotypes from the USDA-ARS/Clemson University sweetpotato breeding program were evaluated in nine field experiments at the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory, Charleston, SC, from 1998 to 2004. There were highly significant entry effects for percentage of uninjured roots; wireworm, Diabrotica, and Systena (WDS) index; percentage of roots damaged by sweetpotato weevil, Cylas formicarius elegantulus (Summers); percentage of roots damaged by sweetpotato flea beetle, Chaetocnema confinis Crotch); and percentage of root

Response of resistant and susceptible barley to infestations of five Diuraphis noxia (Homoptera: Aphididae) biotypes.

Since 2003, four new biotypes of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov) (Homoptera: Aphididae), RWA2-RWA5, have been discovered that have the ability to damage most of the wheat germplasm resistant to the original Russian wheat aphid population (RWA1). Barley germplasm lines with resistance to RWA1 have not yet been evaluated against the newest biotypes. Our study compared how biotypes RWA1-RWA5 affected the growth and leaf damage of RWA1-resistant germplasm (STARS 9301B, STARS 9577B), moderately resistant germplasm (MR-015), and susceptible varieties (Schuyler, Harrington, and M

Natural infection of Lutzomyia neivai with Leishmania spp. in northwestern Argentina.

The natural infection of Lutzomyia neivai with Leishmania in the endemic area of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in northwestern Argentina was analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-hybridization technique. Phlebotominae sand flies were captured in the provinces of Tucumán and Salta between 1999 and 2003. From a sample of 440 Lu. neivai females analysed for the detection of the Leishmania (Viannia) and Leishmania (Leishmania) subgenera, 9.1% of the samples resulted infected with a parasite of the subgenus Viannia and none with the Leishmania. This is the first report of natural

Parasitogenic alterations of vector behaviour.

In many parasite-vector systems, alterations of the behaviour of the blood-sucking arthropods result in an increase of the transmission rate, but the underlying mechanisms are elucidated in only some systems. The more sluggish movements of the Trypanosoma rangeli-infected triatomine Rhodnius prolixus might increase the rate of predation by insectivorous mammals but also the transmission rate between the triatomines via cannibalism. Alterations of the feeding behaviour by which the number of attacks on hosts by blood-sucking arthropods can be increased seem to derive from two possible mechanism
