BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a disorder of aging that is characterized by enlarged cerebral ventricles, gait apraxia, dementia, and urinary incontinence. iNPH is frequently misdiagnosed, in part because the symptoms resemble other neurological disorders, and because other associated symptoms have not been fully characterized. Importantly, iNPH has not previously been associated with stuttering, and shunting has not been shown to alleviate the symptom of stuttering.
CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Here, we report 2 cases of patients with iNPH presenting with stuttering tha

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephlaus (iNPH) is, despite a vastly improved knowledge of the disorder since its first description still underdiagnosed and undertreated. Because of this, there is a need for further large studies describing the typical symptomatology and reversibility of symptoms in iNPH, which was the aim of this study.
METHODS: In all, 429 patients (mean age 71 years) were included. Detailed pre- and postoperative examinations of symptoms and signs were analyzed. A composite outcome measure was constructed.
RESULTS: Sixty-eight % improved after surgery. Preop

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is characterized by the clinical triad of gait and cognitive dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting is often required for treatment. Review of literature shows few case reports discussing benign magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2 hyperintense changes in the corpus callosum of NPH patients after shunting due to mechanical compression of the middle and posterior regions of the body against falx cerebri leading to ischemic demyelination. These changes can be a delayed phenomenon and may interfere with clinical eval

A 59-year-old man with history of multiple sclerosis and residual sensory and motor dysfunction presented with progressive lower-extremity weakness, ataxic gait, and intermittent urinary incontinence. Brain MRI demonstrated volume loss with disproportionate ventricular dilatation, but no evidence of infarction or abnormal enhancement. Radionuclide cisternography showed early and persistent ventricular reflux, poor progression of radiopharmaceutical over convexities, and delayed clearance in a pattern consistent with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Asymmetric activity in the right parietal regio

OBJECTIVES: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a treatable neurological disorder that appears in older adults, lacks specific diagnostic criteria, and resembles symptoms seen in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Presently, differentiating NPH from AD in the early stages of symptom presentation remains difficult. This study established whether olfactory testing may be useful in this regard. In addition, we determined whether olfactory function of NPH patients differed before and after extended lumbar drainage (ELD), as well as six months after surgical implantation of a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) sh

The aim of this study was to determine whether the improvement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics by CSF shunting, can suppress the oligomerization of amyloid β-peptide (Aβ), by measuring the levels of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related proteins in the CSF before and after lumboperitoneal shunting. Lumbar CSF from 32 patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) (samples were obtained before and 1 year after shunting), 15 patients with AD, and 12 normal controls was analyzed for AD-related proteins and APLP1-derived Aβ-like peptides (APL1β) (a surrogate marker for Aβ). INTRODUCTION: Treatment of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is challenging. It is well known that patients with iNPH experience short-term symptom relief after shunt implantation, but the long-term effect of shunting has yielded diverging results. The objective of the present study was to review the literature and to investigate the diagnostics, treatment and outcome of patients with iNPH after shunt treatment.
METHODS: A PubMed search was performed and 430 articles were identified. The search was further limited to humans, language (English and Norwegian) and publication dates

AIMS: To assess the urodynamic patterns present in patients with adult normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in our institution.
METHODS: Retrospectively conducted study on patients diagnosed with NPH by the Neurosurgery Department of our institution, without etiological treatment or urogynecological disorders, who underwent an urodynamic study (UDS) performed according to methods proposed by the International Society of Continence (ICS). Clinical information, complementary tests and UDS were collected, and descriptive analysis was performed, with special focus in urodynamic final diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is considered to be potentially treatable with the placement of a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt. However, the procedure has been reported to have variable success, particularly with respect to improving the cognitive impairment in NPH. The presence of neurologic comorbidities, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD), may contribute to shunt responsiveness. Uncovering the extent to which AD and NPH co-occur has implications for diagnosis and treatment of NPH. Autopsy studies of patients with NPH during their lifetime would elucidate the frequency

Current theories of the pathophysiology of normal pressure hydrocephalus suggest the classical symptoms are a consequence of disruption of normal frontal function. We present the case of a 70-year-old patient with an isolated, frontal dilatation of his lateral ventricles in the presence of a complete triad as supportive of these theories.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a very rare and reversible cause of dementia, and it is often misdiagnosed as other, more common types of cognitive impairments. The classical triad of NPH includes: gait disturbances, urinary incontinence, and cognitive dysfunction. There is a wide spectrum of psychiatric symptoms that may precede or combine the triad NPH symptoms. In this paper, we report a case of 78-year-old NPH patient with puzzling presentation and his cognitive symptoms' response to ventriculoperitoneal shunt. A review of the literature about NPH pathophysiology, evaluation, its as

A 44-year-old African-American male was admitted to our hospital after a suicide attempt. He had depression, poor cognitive function, choreiform movements, difficulty pronouncing words, and difficulty walking. His symptoms had worsened markedly over several months. Chorea lead to genetic testing that confirmed a diagnosis of Huntington Disease (HD). A CT scan of the head showed wider ventricles than is typical of HD. The head CT and gait change suggested normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Lumbar puncture (LP) led to improved neuropsychologic test scores and walking thereby supporting the dia

Polyneuropathy is a rare association of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and may complicate the diagnosis of both diseases. We describe a patient with NPH who presented with acute polyneuropathy. The patient was initially thought to have Guillain-Barré disease (GBS). Early consideration of NPH in patients presenting with acute polyneuropathy could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of NPH.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although gait disturbance is an important feature of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), only tentative theories have been offered to explain its pathophysiology. It has been suggested that the mesencephalic locomotor region is the anatomical substrate for the development of the hypokinetic NPH gait. To investigate this possibility, we evaluated the correlation between gait disturbance and midbrain diameter.
METHODS: We enrolled 21 patients with NPH and 20 age-matched control subjects for the study. The maximal diameter of the midbrain and pons, and the wid

OBJECT: The diagnosis and management of idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) remains controversial, particularly in selecting patients for shunt insertion. The use of clinical criteria coupled with imaging studies has limited effectiveness in predicting shunt success. The goal of this prospective study was to assess the usefulness of clinical criteria together with brain imaging studies, resistance testing, and external lumbar drainage (ELD) of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in determining which patients would most likely benefit from shunt surgery.
METHODS: One hundred fifty-one patient

The psychostimulant methylphenidate has been previously shown to improve cognitive performance in both normal control volunteers and patient populations. In the present case study, the effects of methylphenidate on cognitive and behavioural function were examined in a single patient with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) who had undergone ventriculoperitoneal shunting. A double-blind placebo-controlled ABBA drug design was employed, with the administration of two different doses of methylphenidate followed by neuropsychological assessment on a number of psychometric tests and cogn
