Dental health status and hygiene in children with cerebral palsy: A matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are at risk for oral pathology and parafunctional habits, and are reliant on caregivers for oral hygiene. AIM: To evaluate oral hygiene habits and oral examination findings among a group of children with CP and a healthy age- and gender-matched control group. DESIGN: A comparative, cross-sectional study, consisting of a questionnaire component and a standard dental examination component, each applied to both groups. RESULTS: Eighty-three children with CP and 84 healthy children were included. Parents of children with CP were more likely to be of…

The relationship between oral hygiene-related self-efficacy, general self-efficacy and daily plaque control.

OBJECTIVES: To assess validity and reliability of Turkish oral hygiene-related self-efficacy (OHSE) scale, and the scores of general self-efficacy (GSE) and OHSE in the patients with gingivitis and chronic periodontitis (CP). Additionally, the effect of motivation and oral hygiene instructions on the OHSE scores and plaque index (PI) was also aimed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GSE and OHSE scores were obtained from 210 patients with gingivitis and CP (Group A). After determination of "cut-off" values on OHSE scores, patients with OHSE scores <30 (OHSE-low) and ≥50 (OHSE-high) were included in Grou…

Poor WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Conditions Are Associated with Leprosy in North Gondar, Ethiopia.

Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is critical for preventing the spread of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) including leprosy. WASH-related transmission factors remain largely unexplored in the leprosy transmission cycle. The aim of this project is to better understand WASH exposures among leprosy cases through a case-control study in North Gondar, Ethiopia. We hypothesized that leprosy cases were more likely to have inadequate WASH access and were more likely to have concurrent schistosomiasis, as schistosomiasis immune consequences may facilitate leprosy infection. Forty…

Acceptability of menstrual products interventions for menstrual hygiene management among women and girls in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: A key challenge for menstruating girls and women in low-resource countries is the inadequate and unreliable supply of menstrual products. Although development partners are implementing menstrual product interventions to address this challenge in Malawi, there is a paucity of information on the distribution of menstrual products and the acceptability of these interventions among users. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with girls (n = 20) and women (n = 26) and 4 focus group discussions (FGDs) with women (n = 35) and 7 FGDs with girls (n = 60) to explore the acceptability o

A step beyond the hygiene hypothesis-immune-mediated classes determined in a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity patterns of childhood infections, atopic diseases, and adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are related to immune system programming conditions. The aim of this study was to make a step beyond the hygiene hypothesis and to comprehensively classify these patterns with latent class analysis (LCA). A second aim was to characterize the classes by associations with immunological, clinical, and sociodemographic variables. METHODS: LCA was applied to data from the CoLaus|PsyCoLaus study (N = 4874, age range 35-82 years) separately for men and women. It was based on survey info…

Better Oral Hygiene Habits Are Associated With a Lower Incidence of Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis.

Some peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis cases are thought to be caused by the pathogens in the oral cavity; however, the relationship between peritonitis and oral hygiene habits is unclear. In this study, we retrospectively examined the relationship between oral hygiene habits and peritonitis in patients who agreed to a questionnaire survey. Of the 75 patients, 37 patients developed PD-related peritonitis during the observation period. Peritonitis-free survival was significantly higher in patients who spent more time on oral hygiene daily and in patients who replaced their toothbrush…

Hand hygiene in hospitals: an observational study in hospitals from two southern states of India.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is a simple and low-cost measure to reduce healthcare associated infection yet it has always been a concern in low as well as high resource settings across the globe. Poor hand hygiene during intra-partum and newborn care may result in sepsis, which is a major cause of death among newborns and puts a financial burden on already strained health systems. METHODS: We conducted non-participatory observations in newborn care units and labour rooms from secondary and tertiary level, public and private hospitals, as part of a baseline evaluation of a quality improvement coll…

Comparing knowledge and self-reported hand hygiene practices with direct observation among Iranian hospital nurses.

We compared knowledge and self-reported hand hygiene practices with direct observations among Shiraz Nemazee Hospital nurses. Overall hand hygiene compliance was low (39.6%). Use and appreciation for alcohol-based handrubs were suboptimal. Some reluctance was due to religious concerns. Most nurses self-reported performing proper hand hygiene more than 75% of the time, whereas direct observation indicated much lower levels of compliance. It appears that additional training and improved monitoring are needed.

Towards a renewed public health regulatory and surveillance role in water, sanitation and hygiene (Editorial).

Evidence from the burden of disease studies indicates that improving water, sanitation and hygiene (WSH) is a primary disease prevention measure. It prevents 57% of diarrheal deaths, contributes to prevention and management of neglected tropical diseases, and is the first line of defense against Cholera. Moreover, water and sanitation (W&S) services and hygiene contribute to programme initiatives including new-born, child and maternal health; infection prevention and control; universal health care; antimicrobial resistance; and health emergencies. Access to W&S services is recognized by the Un…

Randomized Controlled Trial of Hospital-Based Hygiene and Water Treatment Intervention (CHoBI7) to Reduce Cholera.

The risk for cholera infection is >100 times higher for household contacts of cholera patients during the week after the index patient seeks hospital care than it is for the general population. To initiate a standard of care for this high-risk population, we developed Cholera-Hospital-Based-Intervention-for-7-Days (CHoBI7), which promotes hand washing with soap and treatment of water. To test CHoBI7, we conducted a randomized controlled trial among 219 intervention household contacts of 82 cholera patients and 220 control contacts of 83 cholera patients in Dhaka, Bangladesh, during 2013-2014.

Exposure models for the prior distribution in bayesian decision analysis for occupational hygiene decision making.

This study introduces two semi-quantitative methods, Structured Subjective Assessment (SSA) and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Essentials, in conjunction with two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations for determining prior probabilities. Prior distribution using expert judgment was included for comparison. Practical applications of the proposed methods were demonstrated using personal exposure measurements of isoamyl acetate in an electronics manufacturing facility and of isopropanol in a printing shop. Applicability of these methods in real workplaces was discussed based on t
