Awake Fibreoptic Intubation for Forearm Injury in a Patient with Occipito-Cervical Fixator.

A 23-year-old male patient with occipitocervical fixator was scheduled for surgery due to injury to the right forearm. The patient's thyrome … ck was performed with local anaesthetic infiltration of tissues 1 cm below the greater horns of the hyoid bone. Lingual and pharyngeal branches of the glossopharyngeal nerve were blocked. Transtracheal block was performed. Following completion of local anaesthesia, the patient was intubated using the awake FOB technique, on 5 L min(-1) of 100% O2. After musc …

Management of obstructive sleep apnea in pediatric craniofacial anomalies.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often associated with congenital craniofacial malformations such as Pierre-Robin Syndrome, He … younger children with OSA expanding the mandible and concomitantly advancing the base of tongue and hyoid bone increasing the pharyngeal airway. The external devices permit greater distraction length, the removal is simple but the devices are uncomfortable for the patients. On the other hand, the internal devices are more comfortable for patients but permit …

One hundred eighty-nine cases of known dead bodies brought for medicolegal autopsy with alleged history of hanging were studied at the Depar … of sternomastoid was seen in 19.6%, and carotid intimal tear was seen in 1.1% of cases. Fracture of hyoid bone at their greater horns was seen in 2.7% and thyroid cartilage in 5.3% of cases. Vertebral fracture and dislocation were noted between third and fourth cervical vertebrae in 1.6% of cases. Neck skeleton injuries were noted in persons older than 38 ye …

Metastasis to the lingual lymph node in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth: a report of two cases.

Cancer of the tongue or the floor of the mouth sometimes metastasizes to the lingual lymph node. We present two patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth who developed metastases to the lateral lingual lymph nodes. Case 1, a 62-year old male, had squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth (T3N2cM0). He underwent tumor resection and bilateral neck dissection, and histological examination revealed five metastatic nodes including the lateral lingual node near the hyoid bone. No recurrent tumors were evident, but he died of pneumonia 10 months after the surgery. Case 2…

The anatomy of the human thyroid veins and its surgical application.

The present study was motivated by the importance of the thyroid veins in surgery in the anterolateral cervical region, particularly in trac … n (52.1%), and was located between 1.0 and 2.5 cm below a plane that passes the upper margin of the hyoid bone. The medial thyroid vein, when present, was not constant (43.3%), was single (96.1%), terminated in the internal jugular vein and was located between 2.0 and 4.0 cm from the mid-sagittal line (84.6%). The inferior thyroid vein was constant (96.7%) a …

Effect of orthognathic surgery on the posterior airway space (PAS).

Orthognathic surgery has been used regularly to treat dentofacial deformities. The surgical procedures affect both the facial appearance as well as the posterior airway space (PAS). Our current literature indicates that setback procedures produce an inferior repositioning of the hyoid bone and posterior displacement of the tongue and the soft palate. These movements cause anteroposterior and lateral narrowing of the PAS. Most authors agree that these effects are permanent. The PAS changes in turn produce an adaptive posturing, with an increased craniocervical angle to open up the PAS. Even tho…

Usefulness of cephalometry in sparing polysomnography of patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnea.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the contribution of cephalometry to a statistical model integrating clinical, physical, and ox … Significant cephalometric measurements were: the linear distance from gonion to gnathion, from the hyoid bone to the mandibular plane, and from the posterior nasal spine to the tip of the soft palate, and the thickness of the uvula as well. A statistical model was built to estimate a patient's probability of having OSA based on clinical variables, physical …

ISMAR: an autotherapeutic device assisting patients from drooling to articulated speech.

This overview of three decades of clinical experience with oral therapies complemented by oral devices-vestibular screens (VS) and ISMARs (Innsbruck sensory motor activators and regulators)-tries to put these devices into an oral functional context including postural control of mobile structures both inside and outside the mouth-down to the feet. ISMARs have certain unique features which teach a person not only better postural control of the lower jaw and, hence, hyoid bone and tongue, but also to stimulate movements of lips and tongue to improve salivary control, functions of eating and drink…

Craniofacial morphology in preschool children with sleep-related breathing disorder and hypertrophy of tonsils.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to examine craniofacial morphology, pharyngeal airway space and hyoid bone position in preschool children with sleep-related breathing disorder associated with hypertrophy of tonsils (SBDT). Thirty-eight preschool children, mean age 4.7 y, with SBDT and with an apnoea index (AI) of 0 < AI < 5, were divided into two groups. One consisted of 15 children with sleep-related breathing disorder (SBD) and more than 75% of the tonsils visible (GIII) and the other of 23 children with SBD and 25-75% of the tonsils visible (GII). The control group consisted of 31…

Advances in maxillofacial imaging.

The maxillofacial region, extending from the base of the skull to the hyoid bone, is one of the most anatomically complex regions of the body. This area contains elements and organs belonging to a number of different systems that can be affected by a variety of local and systemic pathologic processes. Diagnostic imaging has assumed a central role in the evaluation of this region. In the following monograph, we present the reader with an overview of contemporary maxillofacial imaging, focusing on three areas: recent technical advances that impact on the diagnosis of the maxillofacial region, th…

These findings were compatible with compression produced by an inflatable cuff. Toxicological analyses did not reveal any lethal substances. The Stylohyoid Complex: An Update on Its Embryology, Comparative Anatomy and Human Variations.

The stylohyoid complex (SHC), comprising the styloid process (SP), stylohyoid ligament, and lesser horn of the hyoid bone, arises from Reichert's cartilage and plays a central role in head and neck organization. Although anatomically small, it occupies a strategic position in the parapharyngeal space, linking neural, vascular, and visceral compartments. This review integrates embryological, comparative, anatomical, and clinical perspectives to provide an updated synthesis of SHC morphology and significance. Developmental studies highlight the early segmentation of Reichert's cartilage, its tra…

Methodological procedures for ultrasonographic assessment of the tongue during sucking in full-term infants: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: This scoping review aimed to identify methodological procedures for acquiring and analyzing ultrasound images of the tongue duri … nipple, and bottle nipple, and of kinematic measurements of the tongue, nipple, bottle nipple, and hyoid bone. They evaluated quantitative and qualitative parameters. Frequency adjustment depended on the child's age (the B mode was the most used), with babies reclined on the mother's lap to feed from the mother's breast and/or bottle.

Moreover, ≥5-mm upward movement of hyoid bone (P = 0.034) and every 1-mm increase in minimal hydraulic diameter (P < 0.001) correlated with an increase of the PA volume.
