The occurrence of abnormally low serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels is well-known in B chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but published data on IgG subclass levels are virtually absent. We measured serum IgG subclass levels in 52 B CLL outpatients, most in stage A and untreated, using an indirect immunoenzymatic assay with monoclonal antibodies. Mean levels of all Ig isotypes were lower than in normal controls in the whole group of patients, except for IgG2 in those studied at diagnosis. Levels of IgG1, IgG2, IgA, and IgM were lower in patients with a long disease duration than in those studied

UNLABELLED: Primary immunodeficiency diseases are not common in children. The possibility of an immunological defect should be considered in any individual with repeated infections. A definite diagnosis for immodeficiency is sometimes difficult to achieve because of overlapping clinical manifestations. Immunoglobulin subclass deficiency is an immunological deficiency disease with which, one or more IgG subclasses are deficient. T cell immunity is normal. Patients may develop recurrent bacterial and respiratory infections or could remain asymptomatic.
OBJECTIVE: The authors report a case of im

OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study were to identify whether left renal vein (LRV) entrapment was more prevalent in IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) compared with other types of renal diseases, and the association of LRV entrapment with glomerular incidental IgA and galactose-deficient-IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) deposition.
METHODS: A total of 797 patients with biopsy-proven kidney diseases have been screened for LRV entrapment by color Doppler ultrasound, and the prevalence of LRV entrapment in different types of renal diseases were then analyzed. Propensity score match

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide and is characterized by mesangial deposition of nephritogenic IgA-containing immune complexes. Increasing evidence suggests that dysregulated mucosal innate immune responses contribute to disease pathogenesis, particularly through activation of endosomal Toll-like receptors (TLRs). Among these, TLR7 and TLR9, which recognize single-stranded RNA and unmethylated CpG DNA, respectively, have been implicated in the abnormal mucosal immune activation observed in IgAN. Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated i

Background/Objectives: Coeliac disease is an immune-mediated disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that may result in significant nutritional deficiencies. Effective management requires strict, lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet. Both underdiagnosis and unnecessary dietary restrictions can adversely affect patients' health and quality of life. To assess adherence to the current recommendations for the laboratory diagnosis of coeliac disease and promote evidence-based practices while reducing inter-laboratory variability, the Spanish Group on Autoimmunity of the Spanish Society of Immuno

Immune response to tuberculosis (TB) has been extensively studied in the past decades and classically involves cellular immunity. However, evidence suggests that humoral immunity may play a relevant role. Past studies regarding serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels in TB are dated and only involve adult subjects. In this study, we retrospectively studied a cohort of 256 children with TB disease and analyzed 111 patients screened for total serum Ig at diagnosis. According to the severity and extent of organ involvement, subjects were divided into four groups, namely, uncomplicated pulmonary TB (UCPT

The mechanisms of broad cross-protection to influenza viruses of different subtypes, termed heterosubtypic immunity, remain incompletely understood. We used knockout mouse strains to examine the potential for heterosubtypic immunity in mice lacking IgA, all Ig and B cells, NKT cells (CD1 knockout mice), or gamma(delta) T cells. Mice were immunized with live influenza A virus and compared with controls immunized with unrelated influenza B virus. IgA(-/-) mice survived full respiratory tract challenge with heterosubtypic virus that was lethal to controls. IgA(-/-) mice also cleared virus from th

The concentration and distribution of immunoglobulin isotypes (IgG, IgM, sIgA) and IgG-subclass levels (IgG-1-4) were measured in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in 47 children with chronic chest disease (age range 1.0-9.9 years) and 18 healthy controls (age range 1.0-6.25 years). Of these patients, 19 had nonallergic asthma (Group A), 19 suffered from recurrent pneumonia or chronic bronchitis (Group B), and 9 patients had IgG-2 deficiency (Group C). In all individuals, IgG was the predominant immunoglobulin in the lower respiratory tract, followed by IgA and IgM. In patients of Group A an

The prevalence of iron (Fe) deficiency and subclinical lead (Pb) toxicity is high in developing countries like India, and information on their potential additive effects on immune responses is scant. The current study assessed immune parameters in dual Pb-exposed\Fe-deficient weanling SD rats. Rats were fed a control (CD) or Fe-deficient (ID) diet for 4 weeks and then evaluated for hemoglobin (Hb) and serum Fe status. Then, half the rats in each group began to receive daily oral Pb exposure (25 mg/4 ml/kg BW; gavage) or vehicle for a further 4 weeks (while maintained on original respective die

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerular disease worldwide and remains a major cause of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. Conventional monitoring still depends largely on proteinuria, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), hematuria, blood pressure and biopsy-based pathological classification. These measures are clinically indispensable, but they mainly capture downstream kidney injury and may lag behind the mucosal and systemic immune events that drive active disease. In the targeted-therapy era, this limitation has become more consequential. Targeted-releas

The phenotype of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is characterized by recurrent infections owing to hypogammaglobulinemia, with deficiency in immunoglobulin (Ig)G and at least one of IgA or IgM. Family studies have shown a genetic association between CVID and selective IgA deficiency (IgAD), the latter being a milder disorder compatible with normal health. Approximately 20-25% of CVID cases are familial, if one includes families with at least one case of CVID and one of IgAD. Nijenhuis et al described a five-generation family with six cases of CVID, five cases of IgAD, and three cases o…

The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is an immune deficiency disorder with an impairment of both humoral and cellular immune responses. Metabolic turnover studies of IgG, IgA, IgM, and albumin were conducted in seven patients with the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome using purified radioiodinated proteins. The survival of each of the proteins studied was significantly shortened with a half-time of 7.5 days for IgG (normal 22.9 +/-4 SD), 3.0 days for IgA (normal 5.8 +/-1), 5.0 days for IgM (normal 10.1 +/-2.1), and 8.6 days for albumin (normal 17, range 13-20); the fractional catabolic rates were corresponding

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease (CD) probably affects one in 100 Australians, but is greatly underdiagnosed. Heightened media interest in the negative effects of dietary gluten has led many patients to request testing for CD or follow inappropriate diets. Doctors have had little education in CD because of its perceived rarity.
OBJECTIVE: This article summarises current knowledge of clinical presentations, optimal screening and diagnostic tests, and how the general practitioner can best assist patients in adopting a successful gluten free diet.
DISCUSSION: Coeliac disease is associated with a ran

We developed an experimental model to study the effect of daily cocaine administration on the mucosal immune system during murine acquired immune deficiency syndrome (MAIDS). Mice were infected with LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus, a retrovirus which causes immunosuppression with development of functional murine AIDS. Mice were given cocaine by daily intraperitoneal injection for 11 weeks. Our objective was to investigate if cocaine treatment could alter the mucosal immune system at the level of the intestinal lamina propria (ILP) and if it could further modify the already altered mucosal immunit

Using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) the tear protein profiles were measured in controls, patients with Sjögren's disease, questionable dry eye (idiopathic dry eye), idiopathic chronic conjunctivitis and the corneal melting syndrome. Qualitative comparison of the protein profiles of patients with Sjögren's disease, corneal melting and IgA deficiency shows a marked difference in the heights of various peaks as compared to the profiles of the control group. The total protein content of tears in controls and in patients with idiopathic chronic conjunctivitis is age dependent and ap…
