Evaluation of the efficacy of 20% IR3535® with a sustained-release formulation and 25% DEET insect repellents against mosquitoes in a field setting in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Personal protection with topical skin repellents has been advocated for use against vector-borne diseases. This study compared the efficacies of a 20% IR3535® lotion with Staytec technology formulation and 25% DEET lotion in repelling mosquitoes in two rural communities in Ghana. METHODS: Mosquito biting densities were established at baseline and during the intervention using human landing collections (HLC). These were carried out overnight from 21:00-06:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Prior to the HLC, the exposed legs were treated with either a lotion of the 20% IR3535® or 25% DEE

Developing a national atlas to support the progressive control of tsetse-transmitted animal trypanosomosis in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are the sole cyclical vectors of African trypanosomosis, a parasitic disease affecting both animals and humans. The national atlas of African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) and its tsetse vectors in Zambia is an initiative by the Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Control Unit (TTCU) within the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock that aims to improve AAT surveillance and its progressive control by enhancing disease intelligence and data management. METHODS: All field data collected by the TTCU from April 2009 to July 2025 were systematically assembled, geor

Study on the role of RPL23 gene in active immunity of termite Reticulitermes chinensis against Metarhizium anisopliae.

Ribosomal proteins are considered to be involved in the immunity of different animals against pathogens. The protein level of RPL23 increased after fungal infection in termites, but how it influence active immunity in termites is unknown. The role of RPL23 gene was studied to evaluate its impact on active immunity of termite Reticulitermes chinensis against entomopathogenic fungus (EPF) Metarhizium anisopliae. The RPL23 gene fragment (414 bp) was cloned and phylogenetic analysis revealed that it's very close to termite Coptotermes formosanus. Expression of RPL23 gene was significantly higher i

The potential economic benefits of controlling trypanosomiasis using waterbuck repellent blend in sub-Saharan Africa.

Trypanosomiasis is a significant productivity-limiting livestock disease in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to poverty and food insecurity. In this paper, we estimate the potential economic gains from adopting Waterbuck Repellent Blend (WRB). The WRB is a new technology that pushes trypanosomiasis-transmitting tsetse fly away from animals, improving animals' health and increasing meat and milk productivity. We estimate the benefits of WRB on the production of meat and milk using the economic surplus approach. We obtained data from an expert elicitation survey, secondary and experimental sourc

Estimating the impact of Tiny Targets in reducing the incidence of Gambian sleeping sickness in the North-west Uganda focus.

BACKGROUND: Riverine species of tsetse (Glossina) transmit Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, which causes Gambian human African trypanosomiasis (gHAT), a neglected tropical disease. Uganda aims to eliminate gHAT as a public health problem through detection and treatment of human cases and vector control. The latter is being achieved through the deployment of 'Tiny Targets', insecticide-impregnated panels of material which attract and kill tsetse. We analysed the spatial and temporal distribution of cases of gHAT in Uganda during the period 2010-2019 to assess whether Tiny Targets have had an impac

Developing a national atlas to support the progressive control of tsetse-transmitted animal trypanosomosis in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) is a major livestock disease in Kenya. Even though, over the years various organizations have collected a vast amount of field data on tsetse and AAT in different parts of the country, recent national-level maps are lacking. To address this gap, a national atlas of tsetse and AAT distribution is being developed by the Kenya Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Eradication Council (KENTTEC) and partners. METHODS: All data collected by KENTTEC from 2006 to 2019 were systematically assembled, georeferenced and harmonized. A comprehensive data repository and a

Assessing Strategies Against Gambiense Sleeping Sickness Through Mathematical Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Control of gambiense sleeping sickness relies predominantly on passive and active screening of people, followed by treatment. METHODS: Mathematical modeling explores the potential of 3 complementary interventions in high- and low-transmission settings. RESULTS: Intervention strategies that included vector control are predicted to halt transmission most quickly. Targeted active screening, with better and more focused coverage, and enhanced passive surveillance, with improved access to diagnosis and treatment, are both estimated to avert many new infections but, when used alone, ar

Impact of vectorborne parasitic neglected tropical diseases on child health.

Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis are all vectorborne neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that are responsible for significant disease burden in impoverished children and adults worldwide. As vectorborne parasitic diseases, they can all be targeted for elimination through vector control strategies. Examples of successful vector control programmes for these diseases over the past two decades have included the Southern Cone Initiative against Chagas disease, the Kala-azar Control Scheme against leishmaniasis, the Onchocerciasis Control Programme and the lympha

Household model of Chagas disease vectors (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) considering domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic vector populations.

ABSTRACT Disease transmission is difficult to model because most vectors and hosts have different generation times. Chagas disease is such a situation, where insect vectors have 1-2 generations annually and mammalian hosts, including humans, can live for decades. The hemataphagous triatominae vectors (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) of the causative parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) usually feed on sleeping hosts, making vector infestation of houses, peridomestic areas, and wild animal burrows a central factor in transmission. Because of difficulties with different generatio

Vector control interventions for visceral leishmaniasis elimination initiative in South Asia, 2005-2010.

The Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) Elimination Initiative in the Indian subcontinent was launched in 2005 as a joint effort between the governments in the Region (India, Nepal and Bangladesh) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The objective is to reduce the annual VL incidence below 1/10,000 inhabitants by 2015 based on detection and treatment of VL cases and vector control. We present here a review of studies published in the period 2005-2010 on the efficacy of different tools to control Phlebotomus argentipes. The review indicates that the current indoor residual spraying (IRS) and novel

The Onchocerciasis Elimination Program for the Americas (OEPA).

Human onchocerciasis (river blindness) occurs in 13 foci distributed among six countries in Latin America (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Venezuela), where about 500,000 people are considered at risk. An effort to eliminate the disease from the region was launched in response to a specific resolution adopted by the PanAmerican Health Organization (PAHO) in 1991: to eliminate onchocerciasis from the region, as a public-health problem, by 2007. The effort took advantage of the donation of the drug Mectizan (ivermectin) by Merck & Co., Inc. In 1992, the Onchocerciasis Eliminatio

Present susceptibility status of rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae), vector of plague against organochlorine, organophosphate and synthetic pyrethroids 1. The Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu, India.

The susceptibility status of Xenopsylla cheopis, the efficient vector of human plague in India was assessed in erstwhile plague endemic areas of Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu following standard WHO techniques. The studies revealed the development of resistance in rat fleas to DDT--4.0%, Malathion--5.0%, Deltamethrin--0.05% and tolerance to Permethrin--0.75% in all the four blocks of Nilgiris hill district. Development of resistance may be due to the extensive use of insecticides in tea plantations and agricultural sectors where the domestic/peri-domestic rodents find their natural habitats and

Control of Chagas disease.

The Southern Cone Initiative (Iniciativa de Salud del Cono Sur, INCOSUR) to control domestic transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi is a substantial achievement based on the enthusiasm of the scientific community, effective strategies, leadership, and cost-effectiveness. INCOSUR triggered the launch of other regional initiatives in Central America and in the Andean and Amazon regions, which have all made progress. The Central American Initiative targeted the elimination of an imported triatomine bug (Rhodnius prolixus) and the control of a widespread native species (Triatoma dimidiata), and faced c

Repellency effect of forty-one essential oils against Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex mosquitoes.

Since ancient times, plant products were used in various aspects. However, their use against pests decreased when chemical products became developed. Recently, concerns increased with respect to public health and environmental security requiring detection of natural products that may be used against insect pests. In this study, 41 plant extracts and 11 oil mixtures were evaluated against the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus), the malaria vector, Anopheles stephensi (Liston), and the filariasis and encephalitis vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae) using the sk

Monitoring house reinfestation by vectors of Chagas disease: a comparative trial of detection methods during a four-year follow-up.

Domestic reinfestations by triatomine bugs were monitored after application of deltamethrin and apparent elimination of Triatoma infestans in Amama and other nearby rural villages, north-west Argentina, from 1992 to 1996. The five methods used were sensor boxes, sheets of pink typing-paper, timed manual catches by a skilled three-person team aided by a flushing-out agent, collections by house-dwellers, and knockdown using insecticide fumigant canisters. In bedrooms, house-dwellers collected T. infestans significantly more frequently than the flushing-out method, but the reverse occurred in per

The control of Glossina morsitans morsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae) in a settled area in Petauke District (Eastern Province, Zambia) using odour-baited targets.

A trial to control G. m. morsitans with the use of 980 odour-baited, insecticide-impregnated targets was conducted in a 300 km2 area in the Eastern Province of Zambia between 1989 and 1991. The area is highly cultivated and cattle density is high (about 8 cattle/km2). Targets were deployed along roads and tracks. Deployment was restricted to suitable tsetse habitat. The effect of the targets on the tsetse population and on the transmission of tsetse-transmitted trypanosomosis was monitored by means of man-walked fly rounds and sentinel herds, respectively. The apparent density of tsetse in the
