PURPOSE: Structured clinical interviews, such as the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM (SCID), are considered the gold standard for diagnosing mental disorders but are challenging in routine clinical use due to their length. Therefore, screening instruments to identify the need for further assessment are required. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network Distress Thermometer (DT) screens for psychological distress, while the Emotional Functioning (EF) scale of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core (EORTC QLQ-C30) assesses emotion

Through psychiatric interviews and psychological tests the authors studied 38 adults who reported experiencing at least one nightmare per week. Nearly all of the subjects had a lifelong history of frequent nightmares. Four of the subjects met DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia, 9 met the criteria for borderline personality, and 6 met the criteria for schizotypal personality. The others had no specific diagnosis, and none of the subjects had a diagnosis of typical neurosis. Many had mentally ill relatives. Most had artistic interests and talents. These nightmare sufferers may be seen as unusual

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to study the associations of noise with heart rate, blood pressure, and perceived psychological and physiological responses among post-cardiac surgery patients in ICUs.
METHODS: Forty patients participated in this study after recovering from anesthesia. A sound-level meter was placed at bedsides to measure noise level for 42 hours, and patients' heart rate and blood pressure were recorded every 5 minutes. Patients were also interviewed for their perceived psychological/physiological responses.
RESULTS: The average noise level was between 59.0 and 60.8 dB(A) at t

Hirsutism, i.e. 'excess' body hair in the 'male' distribution, is a medical term applied only to women. Although associated with social and psychological difficulties including anxiety, social avoidance and a confusion of gender identity and although it raises important gender issues, there has been little systematic study. No prior research has focussed on the relationship between women's perceived degree of hirsutism and psychological distress. A survey of 53 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which often produces 'excess' hair growth, was carried out to assess any psychological co

In utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) was initially linked to vaginal-cervical cancer and subsequently to reproductive difficulties. These unanticipated and ongoing health risks to female offspring may constitute a chronic source of stress for DES mothers. We interviewed 60 mothers of exposed daughters and 30 acquaintance controls. Two hypotheses were tested in regard to DES mothers: DES discovery and its aftermath have a direct, long-term, negative effect on psychological health and the DES experience intensifies the negative psychological effects of other adverse life circumstances.

BACKGROUND: Broadway's extraordinary commercial success rests on the shoulders of elite performers whose psychological well-being directly contributes to the industry's artistic excellence and economic sustainability. However, the lived experiences of professional musical theatre performers remain underexplored in scholarly literature. Existing research has emphasized individual coping strategies, with less focus on the conditions that support sustained well-being in high-stakes performance contexts. This exploratory single-case study investigated how a seasoned female Broadway performer susta

BACKGROUND: Internet use, specifically problematic use of the internet (PUI), needs to be considered in child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) settings. Besides psychological symptomatology, childhood trauma (intrafamilial abuse and neglect) has been associated with PUI. The impact of various adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on PUI, particularly in CAP populations, is understudied.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate associations between PUI and various ACEs in a CAP population, considering gender differences and psychological symptomatology.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: 104 adolescents

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, ritualistic use of ayahuasca has spread throughout the world. Retrospective studies have suggested a good psychological safety profile, but prospective studies involving ceremony ayahuasca-naive participants are lacking.
METHODS: We conducted the study using a subsample from a previous study, for which first-time ceremony ayahuasca participants were recruited. The subsample consisted of 7 subjects who experienced acute and challenging psychological reactions. The semistructured Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and psychometric questionnaires were ad

BACKGROUND: People with developmental disabilities are at disproportionately high risk of abuse. Although considerable evidence exists on the health-related consequences of abuse in the general population, little is known about those consequences in people with developmental disabilities.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation of abuse with psychological and physical health outcomes in adults with developmental disabilities.
METHODS: We used an accessible audio computer-assisted self-interview to collect anonymous data on demographic and disability characteristics, childhood and adult abuse expe

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating disorder (BED) is positively associated with obesity and psychological distress, yet the behavioral features of BED that drive these associations are largely unexplored. The primary aim of this study was to investigate which core behavioral features of binge eating are most strongly related to psychological disturbance.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been found to be associated with abnormalities in memory function. This relationship has not previously been studied using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false memory paradigm in disaster-exposed populations.
METHODS: Three years after the September 11, 2001 (9/11) attacks, 281 participants from a volunteer sample of 379, recruited from 8 companies directly affected by the attacks, completed an interview about their disaster experience, a structured diagnostic interview, and the DRM paradigm.
RESULTS: It was hypothesized that participa

Background Growing up with a cleft lip and/or palate presents a number of challenges for those affected and their families. Understanding why some individuals cope well while others struggle is key to psychological research in this field. A better appreciation of the factors and processes that contribute to psychological adjustment to cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) from the patient perspective would be of value to both researchers and clinicians. Design Qualitative data elicited from individual interviews with 52 adults born with CL/P. Results Inductive thematic analysis identified three main
