Ileal inflammatory fibroid polyp causing ileocolic intussusception.

Inflammatory Fibroid Polyp (IFP) is an extremely rare tumour involving the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and especially the stomach and small bowel. It presents either as a solitary large or sessile lesion arising from the submucosa and despite a large size and sometimes infiltrating growth, the tumour is always benign and has a good prognosis. Histogenesis remains unknown and controversial. We report an ileal case presenting classically and typically with ileocolic intussusception. Diagnosis was made preoperatively with abdominal mdCT. The polyp itself does not have noteworthy radiological sign

[Explosion in rectum].

The article describes a case of gas explosion during diathermy snare resection of a polyp in the rectum, after cleansing with a sorbitol enema. Proximity to anus prevented perforation or other complications. The patient was shown to be a methane producer by a hydrogen-methane breath test. Gas explosion is a rare complication during use of diathermy in lower endoscopy, and usually occurs in patients with sub-optimal bowel cleansing. CO2 insufflation will prevent this and should be the method of choice; first of all because it reduces patient discomfort in the period after colonoscopy.

Nonfamilial juvenile polyposis coli manifesting as massive lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage: report of two cases.

Juvenile polyposis syndrome is an uncommon hamartomatous disorder with gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations of varying degree and malignant potential. We report the cases of an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl who suffered massive lower GI hemorrhage. Neither patient had a family history of polyposis. After the patients were stabilized, radiological evaluation, laparotomy, and intraoperative colonoscopy revealed multiple polyps in the colon. Both patients underwent total colectomy, mucosal proctectomy, and ileoanal anastomosis. The diagnosis of nonfamilial juvenile polyposis was based on

Hyperplastic polyps of the duodenum: an unusual histological finding.

A 58-year-old man underwent upper gastrointestinal surveillance endoscopy for Barrett's oesophagus. This showed a possible gastric ulcer, although histological examination was normal. Follow-up endoscopy showed white ridges in the distal duodenum and these were subjected to biopsy. Histological examination of the biopsy specimens showed polypoid duodenal mucosa showing features similar to those of a hyperplastic polyp of the colon. In addition, the mucosal surface was focally of gastric surface type. The features were interpreted overall as most likely to represent an unusual form of regenerat

Adult intussusception secondary to inflammatory polyps.

Adult intussusception is a rare entity that may present in the acute and subacute setting principally related to the degree of bowel obstruction. Preoperative diagnosis of this condition may be difficult. The intussusception is usually due to a definable intraluminal lesion, most probably neoplasia, unlike intussusception in children. We present the cases of two adult male patients with intussusception. The first presented with acute small-bowel obstruction secondary to a retrograde ileojejunal intussusception with a pseudopolyp as the lead point. This was possibly due to a retrograde ball-val

Inverted Meckel's diverticulum: an entity simulating an ileal polyp.

A case of inverted Meckel's diverticulum is described. This presented as an ileal polyp in an individual with chronic unexplained iron deficiency anemia. Most prolapsed Meckel's diverticula occur acutely as intussusceptions with bowel obstruction and characteristically develop in childhood. This case therefore represents an unusual surgical problem in an older individual in which the diagnosis was clinically unexpected.

Inflammatory cloacogenic polyp of anus: report of three cases.

The term of "cloacogenic anal carcinoma", "cloacogenic zone" and "cloacal membrane" have been widely used, but the term of "inflammatory cloacogenic polyp" (ICP) was first applied and published by Lobert PF and Henry DA in 1981. Here we present three cases of ICP to stress its inflammatory property, predilection to invade cloacogenic zone of anus and polypoid shape, and to differentiate it from its related lesions as concise as possible.

Further studies of intestinal heterotopia in urethral caruncle.

Colonic mucosa-like intestinal heterotopia in a urethral caruncle is reported in a 2 yr 7 mth old girl and three women; 55, 71 and 78 yrs old. The occurrence of the anomaly in a child supports the first two author's earlier suggestion that the condition is congenital in nature. In princip this could also be the case in post-menopausal women, although the possibility of metaplasia must also be considered. Perhaps the condition could be a precursor of some adenocarcinomas of the distal urethra.

Lymphangioma of the transverse colon treated by transendoscopic polypectomy: report of a case and review of literature.

This report concerns a 73-year-old man complaining of intermittent, dull, umbilical pain on one month's duration. Barium-enema examination and endoscopy revealed a hemispheric cystic tumor at the midportion of the transverse colon, and the presumptive diagnosis was cystic submucosal tumor of the colon. Transendoscopic polypectomy was performed and the bulk of the lesion was locally excised from the colonic mucosa. Histologic examination revealed cavernous lymphangioma originating from the submucosa.

Familial intestinal polyposis and device assisted enteroscopy: where do we stand?

INTRODUCTION: Hereditary polyposis syndromes are a group of inherited disorders associated with a high risk of developing colorectal cancer. The best known ones are familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Peutz-Jeghers (PJS), juvenile polyposis and Cowden syndromes, as well as conditions predisposing to cancer, such as Lynch syndrome. Some of them are characterized by an increased risk of small bowel polyps occurrence. AREAS COVERED: Literature search in PubMed was performed in November 2022 and a narrative review was carried out. Since performing small bowel polypectomy is important in such pa

Endoscopic features of lymphoid follicles in the colonic mucosa using the image enhanced endoscopy and its association with colorectal adenoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Lymphoid follicles hyperplasia (LH) is sometimes observed in the normal colon as small, round, yellowish-white nodules. LH is associated with food hypersensitivity and bowel symptoms and histologically characterized as intense infiltration of lymphocytes or plasmacytes. It is suggested that LH represents inflammatory immune response in the colonic mucosa. We investigated the presence of LH in the normal colonic mucosa and its association with incidence of colorectal lesions including colorectal cancer, adenoma and hyperplastic polyp. PATIENTS/METHODS: 605 participants undergoi
