Excessive masturbation after epilepsy surgery.

Sexual behavior changes as well as depression, anxiety, and organic mood/personality disorders have been reported in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients before and after epilepsy surgery. The authors describe a 14-year-old girl with symptoms of excessive masturbation in inappropriate places, social withdrawal, irritability, aggressive behavior, and crying spells after selective amygdalohippocampectomy for medically intractable TLE with hippocampal sclerosis. Since the family members felt extremely embarrassed, they were upset and angry with the patient which, in turn, increased her depressiv

[Premenstrual syndrome].

The Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is defined as the repeated occurrence of psychic disability accompanied by physical symptoms such as weight-gain, mastodynia and edema during the luteal phase. Irritability, depressive mood, lack of concentration and anxiety are the dominant psychiatric features. These symptoms culminate during the premenstrual period and disappear at the onset of menstrual bleeding. The symptomatology is of variable degree. About 2 to 3% of all women of reproductive age are severely impaired by these symptoms. The etiology of PMS is unknown. Disturbance of serotonin metabolism

Severe premenstrual tension: delineation of the syndrome.

Forty-two women with severe premenstrual tension syndrome (PMTS) were studied to define the clinical phenomenology and examine its resemblance to common psychiatric disorders. They were mature, adult women suffering severe emotional and physical symptoms in the premestruum but well at other times. Their mean premenstrual score on the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) was twice as high as in the study of Moos. Symptoms showed a marked On--Off phenomenon between premenstrual and follicular evaluations with all rating instruments (p less than 0.001). Existing scales for depression, anxiety,

Irritable bowel syndrome and restless legs syndrome: a narrative review of epidemiological and pathophysiological overlap.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) are chronic, multifactorial disorders that have considerable impact on quality of life and common comorbidity with mood and sleep disorders. OBJECTIVES: The present narrative review consolidates existing literature to examine the epidemiological connection, shared pathophysiological mechanisms, and clinical implications of IBS-RLS comorbidity. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar (2015-2025). The inclusion criteria were adult population and peer-reviewed, full-text studies on co-

Chronic Pain and Major Depression: Shared Psychological and Neurobiological Mechanism.

Depression and chronic pain frequently co-occur, amplifying disease burden and complicating treatment. Shared mechanisms span immune, neurotransmitter, and neuroplastic domains. Neuroinflammation, characterized by elevated cytokines such as IL-6 (interleukin-6) and TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-alpha), drives both mood dysregulation and nociplastic pain through microglial activation and central sensitization. Dysregulation of glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling contributes to excitatory-inhibitory imbalance, while altered BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) expression li

Effects of Sex and Race on Epidemiology and Comorbidities of Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Rome III Era Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent disorder of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) with a negative impact on quality of life and healthcare expenditure. This study aimed to investigate sex-based differences in a large cohort of IBS patients from a multiracial safety-net hospital. METHODS: An electronic query was performed using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9) coding to identify 740 outpatients with IBS between 1 January 2005 and 30 September 2007. Demographic data and ICD-9 coded comorbidities were extracted from electronic records. Data anal

Effects of Rhythmic Sensory Stimulation on Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Pilot Study.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by joint hypermobility and skin extensibility and is often accompanied by chronic pain. Rhythmic sensory stimulation (RSS) can be defined as the stimulation of the senses in a periodic manner within a range of low frequencies. Music plus sound delivered through a vibroacoustic device is a form of RSS and has demonstrated utility in managing pain. In this current study, we conducted an open-label pilot study of 15 patients with hypermobile EDS using RSS as the intervention. Posttreatment improvements were seen in 11 of t

Higher prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome and greater gastrointestinal symptoms in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and mood symptoms often co-occur with gastrointestinal problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The extent to which these relate to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is unclear, despite anxiety being a prominent symptom of this disorder. The purpose of this analysis was to examine gastrointestinal symptoms in unmedicated, non-depressed adult OCD patients compared to age- and sex-matched community controls. METHODS: Twenty-one OCD patients and 22 controls were recruited from the community (Hamilton, ON, Canada) and enrolled in this cross-sectional study. In addit

Heterogeneity in chronic fatigue syndrome - empirically defined subgroups from the PACE trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome is likely to be a heterogeneous condition. Previous studies have empirically defined subgroups using combinations of clinical and biological variables. We aimed to explore the heterogeneity of chronic fatigue syndrome. METHOD: We used baseline data from the PACE trial, which included 640 participants with chronic fatigue syndrome. Variable reduction, using a combination of clinical knowledge and principal component analyses, produced a final dataset of 26 variables for 541 patients. Latent class analysis was then used to empirically define subgroups. RESU

Fibromyalgia and related conditions.

Fibromyalgia is the currently preferred term for widespread musculoskeletal pain, typically accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, memory problems, and sleep and mood disturbances, for which no alternative cause can be identified. Earlier there was some doubt about whether there was an "organic basis" for these related conditions, but today there is irrefutable evidence from brain imaging and other techniques that this condition has strong biological underpinnings, even though psychological, social, and behavioral factors clearly play prominent roles in some patients. The pathophysiolo

The impact of psychiatric and extraintestinal comorbidity on quality of life and bowel symptom burden in functional GI disorders.

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) patients report poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and experience high rates of psychiatric and extraintestinal functional disorder (EIFD) comorbidity. The independent influence of these comorbidities on HRQOL and symptom burden remains unknown. We sought to determine whether FGID with mood or EIFD comorbidity have poorer HRQOL and greater GI symptom burdens; to determine the influence of comorbidities on HRQOL in FGID independent of bowel symptoms. METHODS: Subjects reported on comorbidities (anxiety, depression, somatization,

Clinical and research implications of panic-bipolar comorbidity in children and adolescents.

A substantial portion of patients with juvenile bipolar disorder (BD) have a comorbid panic disorder (PD). The aim of our study was to analyze the cross-sectional and longitudinal implications of such comorbidity in children and adolescents with BD. The sample comprised 224 referred children and adolescents with BD, 140 males (62.5%) and 84 females (37.5%), mean age 13.8+/-2.8 years, diagnosed with a clinical interview (K-SADS-PL), and followed up naturalistically for 6 months. Fifty-one BD patients (22.8%) had a lifetime diagnosis of comorbid PD. Subjects with BD+PD and those without BD (BD-n

The effect of life stress on symptoms of heartburn.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial stressors have been associated with exacerbations of symptoms in functional and inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The present longitudinal study tests the general hypothesis that life stressors can exacerbate symptoms in patients with chronic heartburn. METHODS: Sixty subjects with current heartburn symptoms were recruited by community advertisement and assessed for presence of stressful life events retrospectively over the preceding 6 months and prospectively for 4 months. Symptom severity by daily diary, quality of life, and psychological symptoms
