Is serological testing a reliable tool in laboratory diagnosis of syphilis? Meta-analysis of eight external quality control surveys performed by the german infection serology proficiency testing program.

The accuracy of diagnostic tests is critical for successful control of epidemic outbreaks of syphilis. The reliability of syphilis serology in the nonspecialist laboratory has always been questioned, but actual data dealing with this issue are sparse. Here, the results of eight proficiency testing sentinel surveys for diagnostic laboratories in Germany between 2000 and 2003 were analyzed. Screening tests such as Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay (mean accuracy, 91.4% [qualitative], 75.4% [quantitative]), Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay (mean accuracy, 98.1% [qualitative

Identifying Subgroups of People Living With HIV in British Columbia, Canada Based on Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infection Testing and Diagnostic Laboratory Data: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although combination antiretroviral therapy has decreased morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV (PLWH), the prevalence of other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) is rising within this population. We used Latent Class Analysis to examine the diverse lab testing and diagnostic patterns of PLWH in British Columbia (BC), Canada to identify subpopulations of PLWH for targeted STBBI interventions. METHODS: Our study population included all known PLWH with at least one STBBI lab test or diagnosis in BC between December 2003 and March 2020. Lab

Simple demographic characteristics and laboratory findings on admission may predict in-hospital mortality in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection: development and validation of the covid-19 score.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) constitutes a major health burden worldwide due to high mortality rates and hospital bed shortages. SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with several laboratory abnormalities. We aimed to develop and validate a risk score based on simple demographic and laboratory data that could be used on admission in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection to predict in-hospital mortality. METHODS: Three cohorts of patients from different hospitals were studied consecutively (developing, validati

Laboratory-Confirmed COVID-19 Among Adults Hospitalized with COVID-19-Like Illness with Infection-Induced or mRNA Vaccine-Induced SARS-CoV-2 Immunity - Nine States, January-September 2021.

Previous infection with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) or COVID-19 vaccination can provide immunity and protection from subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection and illness. CDC used data from the VISION Network* to examine hospitalizations in adults with COVID-19-like illness and compared the odds of receiving a positive SARS-CoV-2 test result, and thus having laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, between unvaccinated patients with a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection occurring 90-179 days before COVID-19-like illness hospitalization, and patients who were fully vaccinated with an mRNA COVID-19 vacci

Association between number of previous malaria episodes and treatment failure among children and adults with laboratory-confirmed Plasmodium infection treated with pyronaridine-artesunate in Gabon: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a public health challenge in Gabon. Pyronaridine-artesunate is an effective oral treatment for uncomplicated malaria. In real-world context, treatment failures, though still rare, are expected to be more frequent than in clinical trials. Prior malaria episodes have been suggested as risk factor for treatment failure. However, most evidence relies on self-reported history, which is prone to bias. METHODS: A secondary data analysis of the CANTAM study, a prospective multicenter single arm open-label phase IIIB/IV study assessing the safety and efficacy of pyronaridin

Zika-Associated Birth Defects Reported in Pregnancies with Laboratory Evidence of Confirmed or Possible Zika Virus Infection - U.S. Zika Pregnancy and Infant Registry, December 1, 2015-March 31, 2018.

Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects of the brain and eyes, including intracranial calcifications, cerebral or cortical atrophy, chorioretinal abnormalities, and optic nerve abnormalities (1,2). The frequency of these Zika-associated brain and eye defects, based on data from the U.S. Zika Pregnancy and Infant Registry (USZPIR), has been previously reported in aggregate (3,4). This report describes the frequency of individual Zika-associated brain and eye defects among infants from pregnancies with laboratory evidence of confirmed or possible Zika virus infectio

HIV infection in patients attending clinics for sexually transmitted diseases in England and Wales 1988. A Collaborative Study by Consultants in Genitourinary Medicine and the Public Health Laboratory Service.

A national study of the prevalence of HIV antibody in homosexual and heterosexual patients attending sexually transmitted disease clinics in the years 1985-7 was continued in 1988. Among homosexual men in two clinics in south east England HIV antibody was less prevalent in 1988 (30 (7.1%) of 420) than in 1987 (81 (14.6%) of 556) but was more prevalent in 1988 in other regions where the corresponding findings were 48 (4.9%) of 975 and 36 (2.8%) of 1291. HIV antibody prevalence continued to be higher in homosexual men aged 25 or more years or with one or more specified minor complaints. The tren

Utility of Clinical and Laboratory Decision Rules in Identifying Bacterial Meningitis Among Children with Suspicion of Central Nervous System Infections in a Malaria-Endemic Area, Mbarara, Uganda.

Several decision rules combining clinical and biological parameters have been proposed to distinguish bacterial from aseptic meningitis, but have not been evaluated in Africa. In children hospitalized with suspected central nervous system infections in Uganda, we found that the Bacterial Meningitis Score and Meningitest showed lower performance than in European children, and that a decision rule designed specifically using parameters associated with bacterial meningitis also showed inadequate diagnostic performance for clinical use.

Correlation between Venereal Diseases Research Laboratory titers and CD4 T-lymphocyte count determined by flow cytometry in HIV-infected adults: A 5-year study.

INTRODUCTION: Venereal Diseases Research Laboratory (VDRL) is one of the key tests for the diagnosis of syphilis; however in HIV-positive individuals, it has been reported to give inappropriate results at times. Thus, this study was conducted to determine if the VDRL test titers vary with the severity of immunosuppression as determined by CD4 cell count. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2630 samples from HIV-positive adults were tested by qualitative and quantitative VDRL test and if reactive, by Treponema pallidum hemagglutination (TPHA) test. CD4 cell counts were determined at the same tim

Correlation of clinical and laboratory surrogate markers of immunodepletion with T cell subsets (CD4 & CD8) determined flow cytometrically in HIV infected patients: a hospital based study.

CD4 count is established in HIV medicine as a marker of immune depletion. However, due to financial constraints this facility is not readily available in India. Therefore, this cross sectional study in the setting of a government hospital in Pune evaluated 72 HIV infected patients for the surrogate markers of CD4 count by correlating CD counts with clinical and easily available laboratory parameters. Using a data extraction Performa, the epidemiological and clinical data of these patients was noted. Routine hematological parameters were determined. T cell subsets were studied by 2-color flow c

Gamma-proteobacteria Aquicella lusitana gen. nov., sp. nov., and Aquicella siphonis sp. nov. infect protozoa and require activated charcoal for growth in laboratory media.

Several isolates, belonging to two new species of the same novel genus of gamma-proteobacteria, were recovered from drilled well (borehole) and spa water at São Gemil in central Portugal. These organisms are phylogenetically most closely related to the strictly intracellular uncultured species of the genus Rickettsiella, which cause disease in arthropods, and to the facultatively intracellular species of the genus Legionella, some of which cause Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever. The São Gemil strains grew only on media containing charcoal, as is also true of the species of the genus LEG
