Does low lactose milk powder improve the nutritional intake and nutritional status of frail older Chinese people living in nursing homes?

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is prevalent among nursing home residents in Hong Kong. Nutrient dense oral supplements and yoghurt are unpopular among the Chinese older people because of their unfamiliar tastes and relatively high costs. Vitamin and mineral supplements do not address the problem of protein calorie undernutrition. Milk powder may be a suitable alternative supplement, but diarrhoea resulting from lactase deficiency is common in Chinese people. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that a low lactose milk powder would be better tolerated in Chinese nursing home residents and result in improvemen…

Effects of protein restriction in early life on growth and function of the gastrointestinal tract of the rat.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition during early life may have both immediate and later consequences. This study was undertaken to measure the long-t … the small and large intestines and mucosal weights of the foregut were also significantly reduced. Lactase activities were significantly increased and sucrase and maltase activities significantly reduced. By 42 days all the effects were less marked, and at 1 year the dimensions of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract and the composition and enzyme le …

[Lactose absorption and tolerance to different types of yogurts in adults with hypolactasia].

It is known that lactose is better absorbed in yogurts than in milk by lactase-deficient individuals. This fact is due to the presence of beta-galactosidase activity in the yogurts, that are different concerning the caracteristics of the products. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify the absorption and tolerance of lactose in some yogurts consumed by our population. We studied 12 hypolactasic adults who, after diagnostic confirmation, were submitted to three breath hydrogen tests after ingestion of milk and two yogurts with different levels of beta-galactosidase. These activities were det…

Effect of vitamin A deficiency on the adherence of fimbriated and nonfimbriated Salmonella typhimurium to isolated small intestinal enterocytes.

In vitamin A-deficient children, increased rates of bacterial infections in the intestine have been observed. The adherence of bacteria is a … trol group (19.3 +/- 14.9 versus 8.7 +/- 3.5, p = 0.01). The specific activities of the enterocytes lactase, sucrase, and maltase and the protein content in the vitamin A-deficient rats were similar to those in the controls. These results demonstrate that vitamin A deficiency in rats is associated with the increased ability of S. typhimurium to adhere to …

The interactive effects of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) trypsin inhibitor, hemagglutinin and cyanide on some hepatic dehydrogenases, ornithine carbamoyltransferase and intestinal disaccharidases in weanling rats.

These factors had neither individual nor collective effects on sucrase in the small intestine. Lactase activity in the small intestine was influenced only by the RLB diet, while CN + Hgg, and CN + TI + Hgg dietary combinations induced significant (P less than 0.05) elevations in the activities of cellobiase when compared with the control. Although sy …

Diagnostic and metabolic insights into secondary lactose intolerance in infants via fecal lactose quantification and gut microbiome profiling.

BACKGROUND: Secondary Lactose intolerance (SLI) is common among infants in China, primarily resulting from secondary lactase deficiency due to mucosal damage. Current diagnostic methods are limited by poor sensitivity and specificity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate gut microbial composition and metabolic dysfunction in infants with SLI and to explore the potential utility of residual fecal lactose as a non-invasive indicator related to SLI. RESULTS: SLI infants exhibited significantly higher residual fecal lactose and lactate levels accompanied by reduced fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) avail…

Effect of animal plasma proteins on intestinal damage and recovery of neonatal pigs infected with rotavirus.

We used neonatal piglet … Infected, plasma protein-fed pigs maintained greater intestinal mucosa protein and estimated total lactase activity than infected, soy protein-fed piglets. Plasma proteins contain growth factors that may aid in rate of recovery as well as virus-binding proteins that may reduce infection pressure in the intestine. Bugs got milk? Exploring the potential of lactose as a prebiotic ingredient for the human gut microbiota of lactose-tolerant individuals.

Milk consumption is important to help meet daily nutrient requirements. However, lactose-present in dairy products-has been associated with digestive discomfort in individuals who are lactose intolerant or have inadequate lactase activity. Yet, a new perspective on this dietary component has emerged: its potential as a prebiotic for the lactose-tolerant population. We hypothesized that ingestion of lactose may improve the microbial community structure and metabolism of the gut microbiota from healthy adults. First, we assessed the acute impact of lactose ingestion on the gut microbiota of adul…

Human biological variation and the "normal".

Anatomically modern human being is a relatively young species (~300 000 years old) with small amounts of genetic variation contained within them. The vast majority of its existence was spent in Eastern Africa, migration out of the region began around 100 000 YBP. Sub-Saharan African populations have the greatest amount of human genetic variation. However, migration allowed populations to accumulate genomic variation associated with living in the arctic, higher altitudes, disease resistance, living on high fat or starchy foods, surviving toxic arsenic-rich environments, lactase persistence, cha…

Use of genetic testing for hypolactasia trait in the North Denmark Region.

OBJECTIVE: Lactose intolerance (LI) may be considered in patients with unspecific gastrointestinal symptoms, but there is no clear consensus on when and how to diagnose the disorder. The LCT-13910 CC genotype is associated with acquired primary lactase deficiency (adult-type hypolactasia; ATH). We aimed to describe the number of tests and test results in the North Denmark Region considering patient age, geographical origin and repeated testing. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of the polymerase chain reaction-based LCT-13910 genotype tests registered in the clinical laboratory information sy…

Colonic fermentation may play a role in lactose intolerance in humans.

The results of our previous study suggested that in addition to the small intestinal lactase activity and transit time, colonic processing of lactose may play a role in lactose intolerance. We investigated whether colonic fermentation of lactose is correlated with lactose intolerance. After 28 Chinese subjects had undergone 1 glucose (placebo) and 2 lactose challenges, consistent lactose tolerant (n = 7) and intolerant (n = 5) subjects with no complaints after glucose administration were classified on the basis of the 6-h symptom scores. Before the challenges, fecal samples were collected for …

The C/C_₁₃₉₁₀ and G/G_₂₂₀₁₈ Genotypes for Adult-type Hypolactasia are not Associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Lactose intolerance with adult-onset is due to the inadequate enzymatic activity of lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LPH). It is frequently seen in patients with Crohn disease, but the mechanism remains to be elucidated. Two DNA genotypes, C/C_₁₃₉₁₀ and G/G_₂₂₀₁₈, located upstream from the LCT locus, the gene encoding for LPH, were recently identified as representing genetic markers for lactose intolerance. We utilized these two DNA genotypes to study their role in inflammatory bowel disease. METHODS: We investigated the prevalence of these two DNA variants using specific restriction …
