Prosthetic Aortic Valve Endocarditis in a Patient With Birt-Hogg-Dube Syndrome due to Lactobacillus paracasei.

Various causative organisms and predisposing factors were implicated in the pathogenic process behind prosthetic valve endocarditis. Lactobacillus paracasei, a classic constituent of probiotics, rarely causes infections in humans and was reported only in few case reports. The use of probiotics was hypothesized to be a risk factor for these infections; however, no causative relationship could be drawn. We describe a 75-year-old woman with history of Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome and bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement who presented with worsening dyspnea was found to have Lactobacillus paracasei b…

Additive effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus L-92 on children with atopic dermatitis concomitant with food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) in infants is often related to food allergies (FA). The beneficial effects of lactic acid bacteria towards allergic diseases have been reported, but there are few reports on their effect and preferable dosages on AD in young children with concomitant FA. OBJECTIVE: To examine additional effects of two different dose of paraprobiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus L-92 (L-92) on the clinical treatment in young children afflicted by AD with diagnosed or suspected FA. METHODS: Fifty-nine AD young children from 10 months to 3 years old, with FA or who had not starte…

Administration of bifidobacterium and lactobacillus strains modulates experimental myasthenia gravis and experimental encephalomyelitis in Lewis rats.

Probiotics beneficial effects on the host are associated with regulation of the intestinal microbial homeostasis and with modulation of inflammatory immune responses in the gut and in periphery. In this study, we investigated the clinical efficacy of two lactobacillus and two bifidobacterium probiotic strains in experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG) and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models, induced in Lewis rats. Treatment with probiotics led to less severe disease manifestation in both models; ex vivo analyses showed preservation of neuromuscular junction in EAMG …

Effect of Pulsed Electric Fields (PEF) on Accumulation of Magnesium in Lactobacillus rhamnosus B 442 Cells.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of pulsed electric fields (PEF) on accumulation of magnesium ions in Lactobacillus rhamnosus B 442 cells. Under optimized conditions, this is, on 15 min exposure of the 20 h grown culture to PEF of the 2.0 kV/cm and 20 µs pulse width at concentration 400 μg Mg2+/mL medium, accumulation of magnesium in the biomass reached maximum 4.28 mg/g d.m. Optimization of PEF parameters caused an increase of magnesium concentration in the cells by 220% in comparison to the control not treated with PEF. Bacterial cell biomass enriched with Mg2+ may be an alt…

Generation of Lactobacillus plantarum strains with improved potential to target gastrointestinal disorders related to sugar malabsorption.

Malabsorption of dietary sugars is a common cause of gastrointestinal discomfort, affecting up to one in three people with debilitating symptoms, such as abdominal pain, osmotic diarrhoea, bloating and flatulence. Besides dietary interventions, it has been suggested that ingestion of lactobacilli may alleviate these symptoms. The objectives of this study were to generate strains with improved potential to ameliorate sugar malabsorption related gastrointestinal disorders. Initial selection was made from 183 natural isolates of lactic acid bacteria, on the basis of broad sugar fermentation abili

Novel bioactive from Lactobacillus brevis DSM17250 to stimulate the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis: a pilot study.

Commensal skin microbiota plays an important role in both influencing the immune response of the skin and acting as a barrier against colonisation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms and overgrowth of opportunistic pathogens. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a key constituent of the normal microbiota on human skin. It balances the inflammatory response after skin injury and produces antimicrobial molecules that selectively inhibit skin pathogens. Here we describe Lactobacillus brevis DSM17250 that was identified among hundreds of Lactobacillus strains to exhibit an anti-inflammatory effect i…

An assessment of adhesion, aggregation and surface charges of Lactobacillus strains derived from the human oral cavity.

UNLABELLED: There is limited information concerning the adhesion and aggregation of human oral lactobacilli. In this study, the adhesion of 10 Lactobacillus species was investigated using H357 oral keratinocyte cells as an in vitro model for oral mucosa. Coaggregation with the representative oral pathogen, Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, and the physicochemical cell properties was also evaluated. The results demonstrated significant variations in adhesion (42-96%) and aggregation (autoaggregation, 14-95%; coaggregation, 19-65%). All strains showed a high affinity for chloroform, and most stra…

Lactobacillus crispatus inhibits growth of Gardnerella vaginalis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae on a porcine vaginal mucosa model.

BACKGROUND: The vaginal microbiota can impact the susceptibility of women to bacterial vaginosis (BV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). BV is characterized by depletion of Lactobacillus spp., an overgrowth of anaerobes (often dominated by Gardnerella vaginalis) and a pH > 4.5. BV is associated with an increased risk of acquiring STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. While these associations have been identified, the molecular mechanism(s) driving the risk of infections are unknown. An ex vivo porcine vaginal mucosal model (PVM) was developed to explore the mechanistic role of Lactoba…

Selenium effects on the metabolism of a Se-metabolizing Lactobacillus reuteri: analysis of envelope-enriched and extracellular proteomes.

Selenium (Se) has received great attention in the last few years, as it is considered to be essential for human health (prevention of viral infections, heart diseases and ageing-related diseases). Se deficiency can be counteracted by the administration of selenium-enriched probiotics that are able to convert inorganic selenium into less toxic and more bio-available organic forms. This study was performed on Lactobacillus reuteri Lb2 BM DSM 16143, a probiotic LAB previously demonstrated to be able to fix Se into selenocysteines. The aim was to assess Se influence on its metabolism, by a 2-DE pr…

Inhibition of Streptococcus pneumoniae adherence to human epithelial cells in vitro by the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG.

BACKGROUND: Colonization of the nasopharynx by Streptococcus pneumoniae is considered a prerequisite for pneumococcal infections such as pneumonia and otitis media. Probiotic bacteria can influence disease outcomes through various mechanisms, including inhibition of pathogen colonization. Here, we examine the effect of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) on S. pneumoniae colonization of human epithelial cells using an in vitro model. We investigated the effects of LGG administered before, at the same time as, or after the addition of S. pneumoniae on the adherence of four pneumococc…

Comparative therapeutic effect of probiotic Lactobacillus casei alone and in conjunction with antiprotozoal drugs in murine giardiasis.

Various antiprotozoal drugs have been used to counteract the spread of giardiasis. However, due to increase in resistance to these compounds, there is an urgent need to find a natural biocompatible product to fight the pathogen in more healthy and effective way. The present study was designed to compare the therapeutic effect of probiotic Lactobacillus casei alone and in conjunction with antiprotozoal drugs on the outcome of giardiasis in murine model. BALB/c mice were challenged with Giardia intestinalis trophozoites, and 1 day after infection, these mice were treated with either probiotic al…

Anti-inflammatory effects of probiotic Lactobacillus paracasi on ventricles of BALB/C mice treated with ovalbumin.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are microorganisms that benefit animals with allergic diseases and intestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. We propose that LAB can prevent cardiomyocytes inflammation and apoptosis in BALB/c mice using an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergy. Thirty-nine male BALB/c mice were divided into five groups: normal control, allergy control and three allergy groups each treated with Kefir I (Kefir I), Kefir II (Kefir II) or GM080 products (GM080). The myocardial architecture and apoptotic molecules in the excised left ventricle from these mice were investigated a
