Historical suggestions of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) date back to the early 17th century. Placental anastomoses were first reported in 1687; however, it was Schatz who first identified their importance in 1875. He recognized 'the area of transfusion' within the 'villous district' of the placenta, which he named the 'third circulation'. This article describes how the management of TTTS has evolved as we have gained a more sophisticated understanding and appreciation of the complex vascular anastomoses that exist in monochorionic twin placentae. OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy of bedside treatment by laser photocoagulation for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in preterm infants hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
METHODS: The clinical data of 30 cases of ROP who underwent peripheral laser ablation on bedside in the NICU from March to August 2009 were studied retrospectively.

AIMS: Fetoscopic laser photocoagulation (FLP) has become standard therapy for severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome. Data on adverse maternal events are rare. We performed a literature review to obtain data on maternal complications of FLP.
METHODS: Extensive literature review, searching MEDLINE and other databases from 1990 to 2009, using MESH-terms and further keywords. Data extraction was performed using the following criteria: (i) maternal complications reported as primary or secondary outcome parameters; (ii) any comment on adverse maternal events.

Information on feto-fetal transfusion syndrome (FFTS) in higher-order multifetal gestation is limited. We report outcomes of 10 triplet pregnancies treated by fetoscopic laser occlusion of the chorioangiopagous vessels (FLOC). The study period was August 1992 to August 2008. AIM: To present the long-term structural and functional outcome of children treated with diode laser for retinopathy of prematurity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of six premature babies (12 eyes) in whom diode laser treatment was performed for acute retinopathy were followed up. The mean birth weight was 1185.0 +/- 309.6 g and mean gestational age was 28.5 +/- 1.87 weeks. Long term follow-up (18 to 41 months) included retinal examination, refractive status of the eye, and orthoptic evaluation: strabismus, amblyopia and nystagmus assessment.

A 74-year-old man was admitted to our department for surgery of light lung cancer (c-T1N0 M0 stage IA). Preoperative bronchoscopy revealed a smooth-surfaced polypoid lesion about 3 mm in diameter in the left main bronchus. Pathological findings of the biopsied specimen revealed inflammatory granulation tissue.
