A unique case of compartment syndrome of the lower leg following hip arthroscopy: a case report.

Compartment syndrome is a serious condition typically arising from trauma, fracture, or vascular injuries but it can also occur following surgery. Recognized by symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, and neurological deficits, prompt diagnosis and intervention are crucial to prevent long-term complications. Here, we present a rare occurrence of compartment syndrome in the leg following hip arthroscopy. A healthy 25-year-old male underwent revision hip arthroscopy for cam resection and acetabular labral reconstruction. Postoperatively, the patient had progressively worsening pain and swelling

Limb salvage in polytrauma-pushing the boundaries.

This report presents a polytrauma patient with a pelvic ring injury, multiple lower extremity fractures and a mangled left lower leg. After initial vascular repair and a temporising external fixation, the patient's injuries were sequentially addressed. The left tibia was stabilised with an Ilizarov apparatus. Extensive bone and soft tissue damage necessitated the excision of a non-viable tibial shaft segment, enabling the creation of an artificial deformity for extensive temporary soft tissue coverage. Nursing and soft tissue management involved negative pressure wound therapy, copper-ion dres

[Emergency repair of skin and soft tissue defects of lower limbs with island fasciocutaneous flap supplied by superficial sural artery].

OBJECTIVE: To find a better method of emergency repair of skin and soft tissue defects in the lower leg, ankle and foot. METHODS: The distally based superficial sural artery flap was designed on the posterior aspect of the leg. From February 2000 to December 2003, 18 patients with skin and soft tissue detects of the lower leg, ankle and foot were treated with island fasciocutaneous flap supplied by superficial sural artery by emergency. The size of the flap ranged form 4 cm x 5 cm to 11 cm x 12 cm. RESULTS: The flaps survived totally in 16 cases and necrosed partially in 2 cases. After 1-2 y

Treatment for 332 cases of lower leg fracture in "5.12" Wenchuan earthquake.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively analyze the medical treatment of 332 patients with lower leg fracture in Wenchuan earthquake admitted in West China Hospital. METHODS: From May 12, 2008 to June 15, 2008, 332 patients with lower leg fracture injured in Wenchuan earthquake were treated in our hospital. The data on trauma condition and clinical treatment were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 332 cases of lower leg fracture, there were 179 cases of open fracture, accounting for 53.9%, in which 91% belonged to Gustilo II or III injury with serious pollution. Many patients had posttraumatic

Anatomical and clinical study of the common fibular nerve. Part 1: Anatomical study.

The aims of this research were: (1) to minimize injury to the common fibular nerve by a detailed anatomical study of the nerve and its branches and (2) clinically to establish a protocol for preoperative and postoperative assessment of patients undergoing surgery on the proximal third of the leg. Thus the incidence of fibular nerve palsy would definitely be negligible. The first part of the research consisted of an anatomical study of the common fibular nerve and its branches, paying particular attention to the motor nerve branches innervating different muscles of the leg. Dissections were don

Randomised trial of the effects of four weeks of daily stretch on extensibility of hamstring muscles in people with spinal cord injuries.

The aim of this assessor-blind randomised controlled trial was to determine the effect of four weeks of 30 minute stretches each weekday on extensibility of the hamstring muscles in people with recent spinal cord injuries. A consecutive sample of 16 spinal cord-injured patients with no or minimal voluntary motor power in the lower limbs and insufficient hamstring muscle extensibility to enable optimal long sitting were recruited. Subjects' legs were randomly allocated to experimental and control conditions. The hamstring muscles of the experimental leg of each subject were stretched with a 30

Descriptive Epidemiology of Injuries Sustained in National Collegiate Athletic Association Men's and Women's Lacrosse, 2004-2005 Through 2013-2014 Seasons.

Background: Men's and women's lacrosse operate with significantly different rules, equipment, and contact. Previous studies have assessed injury rates (IRs) in either men's or women's lacrosse, but a few studies have compared injury patterns in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's and women's lacrosse. Purpose: We sought to examine whether there were differences in injury type, mechanism, setting, and time loss in men and women playing lacrosse in the NCAA. Methods: We performed a retrospective case-control study using data collected by the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program

Use of a calf prosthesis and tissue expansion in aesthetic reconstruction of the leg.

We present a technique for reconstruction of the legs in patients with soft-tissue loss and formation of large scars with retraction of this tissue in the pretibial region. In such patients, a subcutaneous tissue expander is placed in the region adjacent to the scar tissue. With expansion, we obtained sufficient skin for use in the reconstruction, and the resulting asymmetry in leg diameter was compensated for by means of one or two calf prostheses, depending on the patient.

Pediatric pedestrian versus motor vehicle patterns of injury: debunking the myth.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanism of injury has been widely used to enhance the ability of EMS providers to recognize predictable injury patterns. One such pattern, referred to as "Waddell's triad," identifies a triad of injuries associated with pedestrian/motor vehicle collision (MVC), including trauma to the head, abdomen, and lower extremities. We questioned this choice as a common injury pattern for this mechanism. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 4444 pediatric trauma patients admitted to a regional pediatric trauma center between 1992 and 1996. The source of this information was the medic

New distribution sites and local population trends of the white-eared night heron (Gorsachiusmagnificus) in China.

The White-eared Night Heron (Gorsachiusmagnificus) is an endangered species facing increasing threats from human activities and ecological c … here were 17 reports of injuries to the White-eared Night Heron, including five wing injuries, four leg injuries, three eye injuries and five unspecified injuries. Our results suggest that discarded fishing lines, fishhooks and plastic contamination are the main causes of injuries to the species. For the local population, we recorded 12 breeding pairs of this …

The epidemiology of injury in skateboarding.

The purpose of this report is to review the available literature to provide an epidemiological overview of skateboarding injuries, as well as to suggest possible areas for future research. A literature search was performed with the databases of PubMed, Sport Discus, Google and Google Scholar using the search terms 'skateboard', 'skateboarding', 'injury' and 'injuries', with all articles published in refereed journals in the English language being considered. An ancestry approach was also used. Articles from non-juried journals were also infrequently included to provide anecdotal information on

Identifying Improvements in Treating Extremity Musculoskeletal Injuries During Prolonged Care.

INTRODUCTION: In prolonged care scenarios, where medical evacuations are significantly delayed, the treatment and transport of casualties with extremity musculoskeletal injuries will drain combat units' human resources. Developing enhanced splinting techniques to restore casualty mobility and function can alleviate this drain. To guide this development, a panel of tactical combat and wilderness medicine experts was assembled to determine which extremity musculoskeletal injuries had the greatest impact on unit capabilities, and the materials available for splinting these injuries. The associated factors for physical activity-related injuries among first-year university students in southern China from a biopsychosocial perspective.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the diverse factors influencing physical activity-related injuries is crucial for developing effective interventions that enable individuals to participate in physical activity (PA) while minimizing injury risk. Currently, research evidence on the multiple factors associated with PA-related injuries is inadequate. This study aimed to examine the associations between PA-related injuries and various biological, psychological, and social factors among first-year university students in China. METHODS: We recruited first-year university students from Shantou University in
