Parkinson's disease focused multimodal wearable vision based gait monitoring system with real time feedback to support mobility and caregiver well-being.

A chronic and progressive neurological disorder, Parkinson's disease (PD) has a significant influence on patients and their caregivers. Motor symptoms such as postural instability, tremors, and gait dysfunction lead to increased dependency, high caregiver vigilance, and chronic psychological distress in terms of stress, anxiety, and reduced quality of life. Caregivers of patients with PD experience chronic emotional and cognitive distress due to the uncertainty and unpredictability of motor symptoms in daily life, which are not effectively managed by traditional episodic clinical evaluations.

Low-grade systemic inflammation stimulates microglial turnover and accelerates the onset of Alzheimer's-like pathology.

Several in vivo studies have shown that systemic inflammation, mimicked by LPS, triggers an inflammatory response in the CNS, driven by microglia, characterized by an increase in inflammatory cytokines and associated sickness behavior. However, most studies induce relatively high systemic inflammation, not directly compared with the more common low-grade inflammatory events experienced in humans during the life course. Using mice, we investigated the effects of low-grade systemic inflammation during an otherwise healthy early life, and how this may precondition the onset and severity of Alzhei

[With regard to COVID-19 contingency. ECMO in adults. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). To whom, how and when].

ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is an extracorporeal life support system in catastrophic lung failure, shock and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, in different age groups, with multiple physiologic features. When the candidate to be submitted is too unstable to be transported to a hospital with ECMO, cannulation before transfer allows stabilization and subsequent transport. The aim of this article is to review the current concepts of extracorporeal support, its indications, national and international experience, and its possible role in the SARS-Cov2 pandemic.

ECLS supported transport of ICU patients: does out-of -house implantation impact survival?

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is an established tool to stabilize severely ill patients with therapy-refractory hemodynamic or respiratory failure. Recently, we established a mobile ECLS retrieval service at our institution. However, data on the outcome of patients receiving ECLS at outside hospitals for transportation into tertiary hospitals is still sparse. METHODS: We have analyzed all patients receiving ECLS in outside hospitals (Transport group, TG) prior to transportation to our institution and compared the outcome to our in-house ECLS experience (Home Group, HG). Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy: respiratory vs. cardiac contributions.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) poses a significant risk to life expectancy for individuals with epilepsy. Mechanistic insight, while incomplete, has advanced through clinical observational studies and animal models. Yet we lack preventative therapies, which will depend on understanding SUDEP mechanisms. Recurrent convulsive seizures are the major SUDEP risk factor. Cardiorespiratory dysfunction precedes SUDEP, but whether cardiac arrhythmias are major proximate culprits for SUDEP remains to be determined. Here, we highlight recent data from mouse models and clinical studies that p

The pathogenesis of hemorrhoids.

The structure of the anal canal was examined in histology slides. Hemorrhoids are normal features of the human anatomy. They are pads that bulge into the lumen. Hemorrhoids have three parts: 1) the lining, which can be mucosa or anoderm; 2) the stroma with blood vessels, smooth muscle, and supporting connective tissue; and 3) the anchoring connective tissue system, which secures the hemorrhoids to the internal sphincter and the conjoined longitudinal coat. The anchoring and supporting connective tissue system deteriorates with aging. The hemorrhoids not only bulge, but descend into the lumen.

Suicidal Behavior in Women as a Risk Factor Generated by the Invisibilization of Their Affective Sexual Diversity, Gender Identity and LGTBphobia.

Introduction: Suicidal manifestations during the invisibilization of sex-gender diversity arise from various factors. The link between internalized and externalized LGBTphobia and suicide is crucial, as both forms of discrimination can increase suicidal behaviors. Informal social networks are vital, offering support and community, but they can also exacerbate isolation if not managed properly. Research Objective: To analyze the manifestations of suicidal behaviors experienced during the period of invisibilization of gender diversity, considering the interrelation between internalized/externali

Breast Cancer: The Psychological Impact of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Remission.

Breast cancer affects millions of people worldwide. With physical manifestations being the predominant feature of management, healthcare professionals can overlook the psychological toll that the disease can have on the patients and their support network. This literature review examines the vast multi-factorial approach that must be taken when managing breast cancer patients from initial screening to diagnostic investigations, treatment, and remission. A literature search in PubMed from January 2000 to April 2024 was executed. Data sets in the studies filtered during the literature search were

Determinants of Family Caregiver Well-Being in Home-Based End-of-Life Care: A Qualitative Synthesis.

CONTEXT: Family caregivers are fundamental to enabling home-based end-of-life care, yet their well-being remains inadequately understood. While previous research has documented caregiver burden, a comprehensive understanding of the multidimensional factors shaping caregiver well-being across diverse contexts remains lacking. OBJECTIVES: To synthesize qualitative evidence on the determinants of family caregiver well-being in home and community end-of-life care settings, developing an integrated conceptual understanding of facilitators and barriers across physical, psychological, social, and sp

Aryl-Boroxazolidones with Low In Vitro Neurotoxicity and Alleviative Effects on MPTP-Induced Parkinsonism in Mice.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most prevalent and extensively studied neurodegenerative conditions. One of its most challenging clinical manifestations is the emergence of dyskinesias, characterized by involuntary movements that significantly impair patients' quality of life. Meanwhile, boron, as a trace element, and boron-containing compounds have emerged as active modulators of neurotransmitter systems. To evaluate the effect of aryl-boroxazolidones on parkinsonism, the in vitro neurotoxicity of three boroxazolidones was assessed, along with the effects of two of them in mice with pa

Stable isotopes from Earth science to bedside medicine: beyond tracers and toward mechanistic biomarkers in medical oncology.

Stable isotopes are non-radioactive variants of the same element whose small mass differences produce predictable effects in chemical and biological systems. While medicine has mainly used the administration of enriched stable isotopes as tracers of physiological function, the natural sciences developed stable-isotope ratios into robust measures of source, transformation, and underlying mechanism across Earth and life history. This analytical power - that often goes beyond conventional concentration-based assays - emerged through advances in isotope theory, mass spectrometry, but perhaps most

BMA-YOLO: an object detection model for microscopic images of mouse embryos.

In vitro embryo culture is a pivotal technology in life sciences and medical research. However, automated monitoring remains challenging due to factors such as bubble interference and the frequent omission of small or peripheral embryos. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces BMA-YOLO, an enhanced model built upon the YOLOv8 architecture. By integrating BiFormer and Multi-Scale Attention Aggregation (MSAA) mechanisms, the model strengthens its capacity for feature extraction and multi-level feature fusion. Furthermore, a detection head specifically designed to capture small objec

Functional abiotic metabolite assembly hypothesis for the early events in the origin of life.

The RNA world hypothesis provides a compelling framework for the emergence of life, yet a fundamental gap remains between simple abiotic molecules and complex functional RNA polymers. Here, we propose the Functional Abiotic Metabolite Assembly hypothesis, in which simple prebiotically abundant molecules, particularly amino acids and nucleobases, preceded peptides and RNA as self-organizing functional entities. Unlike peptides, which are rarely detected in abiotic contexts, metabolite-like molecules are readily found in meteorites and early Earth simulations and can self-assemble into ordered,

Biomechanical anticoagulation by spherical platelets in extracorporeal systems.

Extracorporeal life support, such as hemodialysis, often face the risk of blood coagulation, where systemic anticoagulation with heparin is routinely administered. However, this strategy is contraindicated in patients at high risk of bleeding. Inspired by the observation that rolling motion of spherical platelets avoids their exposure to tangential forces, an anticoagulation strategy is proposed based on platelet spherification for extracorporeal systems. Experimental results prove that spherical platelets retain activation pathways and capacity compared to discoid platelets. Mechanical activa
