Outcomes of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lip Treated With Mohs Micrographic Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs) of the lip have been reported to be at higher risk for poorer post-treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine outcomes of patients with SCC of the lip treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) and identify factors for recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective review of a single tertiary referral center's Mohs case logs from 2010 to 2019 identified cases of lip SCC. Clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes (local recurrence [LR], metastasis, and disease-specific death) were reviewed. RESULTS: One hundred ninety cases

The impact of lip-split mandibulotomy on patients treated for pT2 oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma: a study of 224 patients.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck surgeons often face a challenge in order to achieve adequate three-dimensional resection of tumours in the oral cavity, especially in the dentate patient. METHODS: We compared the outcomes of lip-split mandibulotomy and trans-oral access, respectively, in patients treated for primary pT2 oral tongue SCC with regard to the status of the resection margins and the incidence of tumour recurrence. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed a non-significant effect of the surgical technique used to the reported recurrence, F(1, 224) = 0.350, p = .555 and a significant effect o

Synchronous double malignancy of lip and submandibular salivary gland with rare histology.

In the modern era, there is an increase in the incidence of double malignancies owing to the remarkable improvement in cancer diagnostics and patient survival. Double malignancies can be either synchronous or metachronous. Synchronous double malignancy can present either at the same time or within 6 months of diagnosis of the first one. We present a case of double malignancy of lip and submandibular salivary gland, diagnosed in a 55-year-old male, who presented with ulceroproliferative lesion of the upper lip and a hard swelling in the right submandibular gland. The tissue diagnosis was sugges

High (nuclear) grade adnexal carcinoma with microcystic adnexal carcinoma-like structural features.

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) is a slow growing, locally aggressive sweat gland tumor. It predominantly affects the face and tends to recur despite local excision. Microscopically, MAC is characterized by a stratified proliferation of microcysts, cords, and ducts of cells that show squamous or adnexal differentiation. Atypia and mitoses are almost completely absent and metastatic deposits are rare and mostly limited to the regional lymph nodes; rather than real metastases, they might be the result of local extension of the tumor through perineurial spaces. We report a case of adnexal car

Salivary gland cystadenocarcinomas. A clinicopathologic study of 57 cases.

Current classification schemes for salivary gland neoplasms categorize cystadenocarcinomas on the basis of a recurring histomorphologic pattern of cystic, and often, papillary growth without features of other specific types of salivary gland tumors. To ascertain the clinicomorphologic spectrum and biologic behavior of this tumor, the clinicopathologic features of 57 cystadenocarcinomas from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were studied. Excluding five Veterans Administration military cases, men and women were equally affected. Patients ranged in age from 20 to 86 years (mea

The inverted Schneiderian papilloma: a clinical and pathological study.

Inverted papillomas which arise from the lining membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses are relatively unfamiliar lesions which have been reported in the literature under a variety of titles. The uncertainly surrounding their etiology, their relationship to nasal polyps and their malignant potential have resulted in an ill-defined clinical approach to their management. The designation Inverted Schneiderian Papilloma is suggested as an appropriate title that best conveys the qualities of inversion, location and distinctiveness of character. The characteristic microscopic feature is the incr

Thymectomy to achieve primary closure of total sternal cleft.

Total sternal cleft is a rare congenital malformation that may represent a challenge for the surgeon. In neonatal period, the primary closure is usually achievable, but at older age, this can be impossible. Moreover, the closure of the 2 sternal bars can bring to an exaggerated compression on mediastinal structures. Many different techniques for the treatment of sternal clefts have been reported in literature. We describe one case of total sternal cleft repaired at 4 months of age in which a partial thymectomy was performed to achieve the primary closure. We suggest considering this simple pro

Application of modified Karapandzic flaps in large lower lip defect reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of a lower lip defect with a Karapandzic flap often leads to greater rounding of the commissure. The aim of this study was to provide a new design of bilateral Karapandzic flap for large lower lip defect reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-series retrospective study, a modification of the Karapandzic lip reconstruction technique was used with an additional incision to obtain more tissue. The esthetic outcome of the reconstruction was assessed using a 4-point scale with regard to the shape of the commissure, lip symmetry, appearance of the scar, and lip

A rare case of canalicular adenoma in the parotid gland: Highlighting diagnostic limitations of fine-needle aspiration.

BACKGROUND: Canalicular adenoma is a rare, benign tumor of primarily salivary gland origin that presents mostly in the upper lip. However, there are only six reports in the English literature detailing canalicular adenoma of the parotid gland, none of which discuss discrepancy between preoperative cytology and surgical pathology. In this report, we present a rare case of parotid gland canalicular adenoma where preoperative ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (USFNA) suggested malignancy. The patient was treated with deep lobe parotidectomy due to the FNA results and her multiple comorbidi

Melanotic and non-melanotic malignancies of the face and external ear - A review of current treatment concepts and future options.

Skin has the highest incidence and variety of tumors of all organs. Its structure is of great complexity, and every component has the potential to originate a skin neoplasm (SN). Because of its exposed nature, skin is vulnerable to carcinogenic stimuli such as UV radiation. Various entities can cause SN. Nonmelanotic skin cancers (NMSC) are the most common of all cancers, with over one million cases diagnosed annually in the US. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) accounts for approximately 80% of all NMSC, most of the remaining 20% being squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The skin of the head and neck is

Eosinophilia is a favorable prognostic marker for oral cavity and lip squamous cell carcinoma.

Eosinophils are frequently encountered with squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and it has been proposed that tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE) could be of prognostic significance in oral SCC. The aim was to evaluate TATE in 83 oral cavity and 16 lip SCCs as well as the best possible use of TATE as a prognostic marker. The number of eosinophils was counted per high power fields (HPF, ×400) in three different representative areas of the tumor and its stroma. The degree of TATE was analyzed in relation to clinicopathological features of tumors and patients' survival (follow-up mean 40.7 mon

Two-Thirds Lip Defects: A New Combined Reconstructive Technique for Patients With Epithelial Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The lips are a common site prone to squamous cell carcinomas, which arise in the facial region. There are different techniques to reconstruct the excised lip region, according to dimensions, area, and position of the tumor. The authors describe a new technique of lip reconstruction born from a combination between a nasolabial flap and adipose tissue transplant. METHODS: The study was lead in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department of the University of Catanzaro. It includes 10 patients with squamous and basal cell carcinomas that interested lower or upper lip. The author

The Burden of Lip and Oral Cavity Cancer Among Women Across 204 Countries and Territories in the Context of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control: An Interrupted Time Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Historically, lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) has been more prevalent among men, largely due to higher tobacco use in this group. However, over the past decades, smoking rates among women have risen and, in some regions, are approaching those of men. This shift highlights the urgent need to analyze the burden of LOC specifically in women, as they may respond differently to tobacco control policies. This study assessed whether the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC), launched in 2003, and the implementation of MPOWER measures have influenced

The neural histogenetic origin of the oral granular cell tumor: an immunohistochemical evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Mpox is a zoonotic disease caused by mpox virus. Sporadic cases reported before 2022 were almost universally linked to a direct contact with animals or travel to endemic regions of Africa. However, in 2022, a significant shift occurred in human‑to‑human transmission, leading to a global outbreak in 117 countries. In Poland, 217 cases of mpox were reported. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiology, clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and coinfections with sexually transmitted pathogens among patients with mpox. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospec

[Spinocellular carcinoma of the upper lip in a child with Xeroderma pigmentosum].

Xeroderma Pigmentosum is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by marked sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation that leads to the development of multiple skin malignancies. We report a 4 years-old girl with Xeroderma Pigmentosum who, admitted to our cares, presented a squamous cell carcinoma of the upper lip. The rarity of the squamous cell carcinoma together to the very young age of the patient lead us to report our experience.
