Analysis of the variation in low-level laser energy density on the crushed sciatic nerves of rats: a morphological, quantitative, and morphometric study.

The objective of this study was to evaluate three energy densities of low-level laser therapy (LLLT, GaAlAs, 780 nm, 40 mW, 0.04 cm2) for the treatment of lesions to peripheral nerves using the sciatic nerve of rats injured via crushing model (15 kgf, 5.2 MPa). Thirty Wistar rats (♂, 200-250 g) were divided into five groups (n = 6): C-control, not injured, and irradiated; L0-injured nerve without irradiation; L4-injured nerve irradiated with LLLT 4 J/cm2 (0.16 J); L10-injured nerve irradiated with LLLT 10 J/cm2 (0.4 J); and L50-injured nerve irradiated with LLLT 50 J/cm2 (2 J). The animals wer

[Low level laser therapy : A narrative literature review on the efficacy in the treatment of rheumatic orthopaedic conditions].

BACKGROUND: In low level laser therapy (LLLT) low wattage lasers are used to irradiate the affected skin areas, joints, nerves, muscles and tendons without any sensation or thermal damage. Although the exact mechanism of its effect is still unknown, it seems beyond dispute that LLLT induces a variety of stimulating processes at the cellular level affecting cell repair mechanisms, the vascular system and lymphatic system. LLLT has been popular among orthopaedic practitioners for many years, whereas university medicine has remained rather sceptical about it. OBJECTIVES: Overview of studies on t

Interventions for female pattern hair loss.

BACKGROUND: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL), or androgenic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss affecting women. It is characterised by progressive shortening of the duration of the growth phase of the hair with successive hair cycles, and progressive follicular miniaturisation with conversion of terminal to vellus hair follicles (terminal hairs are thicker and longer, while vellus hairs are soft, fine, and short). The frontal hair line may or may not be preserved. Hair loss can have a serious psychological impact on women. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of the ava

Treatment of early-stage erythematotelangiectatic rosacea with a Q-switched 595-nm Nd:YAG laser.

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea presents as persistent erythema and telangiectasia with frequent flushing and blushing on the facial and extrafacial skin. Additionally, papulopustular rosacea shows acneiform papules, pustules, and nodules with persistent plaque-form edema. Despite garnering only grade-C or -D level recommendations, a 585-nm or 595-nm flashlamp-pumped pulsed-dye laser can be considered as an effective therapeutic modality for the treatment of rosacea in patients who are refractory to topical and/or systemic treatments. In this report, treatment with a Q-switched 595-nm neodymi

Low-level laser therapy to the mouse femur enhances the fungicidal response of neutrophils against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

Neutrophils (PMN) play a central role in host defense against the neglected fungal infection paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), which is caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb). PCM is of major importance, especially in Latin America, and its treatment relies on the use of antifungal drugs. However, the course of treatment is lengthy, leading to side effects and even development of fungal resistance. The goal of the study was to use low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to stimulate PMN to fight Pb in vivo. Swiss mice with subcutaneous air pouches were inoculated with a virulent

Evaluation of two protocols for low-level laser application in patients submitted to orthodontic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Different low-level laser (LLL) irradiation protocols have been tested to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Nevertheless, divergent results have been obtained. It was suggested that the stimulatory action of low level laser irradiation occurs during the proliferation and differentiation stages of bone cellular precursors, but not during later stages. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of two protocols of LLL irradiation on experimental tooth movement: One with daily irradiations and another with irradiations during the early stages. Low-level laser therapy improves repair following complete resection of the sciatic nerve in rats.

The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the regeneration of the sciatic nerve in rats following a complete nerve resection. Male Wistar rats were divided into a control injury group, injury groups irradiated with a 660-nm laser at 10 or 50 J/cm(2), and injury groups irradiated with an 808-nm laser at 10 or 50 J/cm(2). Treatment began 24 h following nerve resection and continued for 15 days. Using the sciatic functional index (SFI), we show that the injured animals treated with 660 nm at 10 and 50 J/cm(2) had better SFI values compared with the contr

Effect of a novel low-energy pulsed-light device for home-use hair removal.

BACKGROUND: Removal of unwanted hair is the most popular skin treatment worldwide. Over the past decade, various lasers and light sources for epilation have been advocated for use in an office setting, although most people continue to treat unwanted hair with a variety of temporary physical methods (e.g., waxing, shaving) in a home setting, presumably due to cost and convenience factors. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a low-energy pulsed-light device intended for home-use hair removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty women (skin phototypes I-IV) with dark terminal hair in n
