BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD), also known as mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, is an acute febrile exanthematous illness primarily affecting children under 5 years of age. It is characterized by systemic vasculitis of medium and small arteries. KD can present with cervical lymphadenopathy and fever as initial symptoms, often making it difficult to distinguish from acute bacterial lymphadenitis, parapharyngeal abscess or other cervical cystic lesions.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Tularaemia is an infrequently occurring disease in Poland. It has therefore rarely been taken into account in the differential diagnosis of skin lesions, lymphadenitis, or soft tissue abscesses. This fact, accompanied by non-specific initial presentation, may lead to a delay in diagnosis and a more severe course of the disease. Objective. The aim of the study is to present the current state of knowledge on tularaemia and convince medical professionals to take it into consideration in the diagnosis of skin lesions, lymphadenitis, and tissue abscesses.

Mycobacterium celatum is a recently described organism. Herein we describe a case of M. celatum lymphadenitis in an immunocompetent child and the first reported case of a M. celatum infection (lung abscess) in a transplant recipient. A literature review identified 19 other cases of M. celatum infection. Fifteen occurred in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. On the basis of 865 registered cases of adverse effects after mass BCG vaccinations in Poland the frequency of these effects has been estimated at 0.2/1000 i.e. 2 cases per 10,000 vaccinated. Among the 865 such cases there were 465 cases (53.8%) of local adverse effects and 365 (43.6%) of lymphadenitis. Within the latter there were 0.04/1000 (i.e. 4 cases per 100,000 vaccinated) of cases with suppurative lymphadenitis. They were found mainly in newborns.
