Combining fMRI and MEG increases the reliability of presurgical language localization: a clinical study on the difference between and congruence of both modalities.

To avoid neurological impairment during surgery near language-related eloquent brain areas, we performed presurgical functional brain mapping with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) in 172 patients using language tasks. For MEG localizations, we used either a moving equivalent-current dipole fit or a current-density reconstruction using a minimum variance beamformer with a spatial filter algorithm. We localized the Wernicke and Broca language areas for every patient. We integrated the results into a frameless stereotaxy system. To visualize the result…

MEG phase follows conscious perception during binocular rivalry induced by visual stream segregation.

We have investigated an unusual form of binocular rivalry between two images that are flickered one to each eye, but are never presented simultaneously to the observer. The images were presented in alternation, with a brief dark period between the images. When the flicker frequency was < 5 Hz, the subjects primarily experienced a unitary flicker that alternated between the two images. When the flicker frequency was > 5 Hz, the subjects primarily experienced two single-image flickers that rival. We investigated magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses at the flicker frequency of the rival stimuli…

Image-guided removal of supratentorial cavernomas in critical brain areas: application of neuronavigation and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging.

In a retrospective study the postoperative results of 26 patients operated on for supratentorial cavernous hemangiomas either deep-seated or near eloquent brain areas are summarized. An exact surgical approach to these lesions is essential to prevent neurological deterioration. Three different navigation systems were used and compared according to their clinical applicability. Complete removal of the lesion was obtained in all patients of this series. In six cases (23 %) functional data from magnetoencephalography or functional magnetic resonance imaging were integrated into the navigational s…

The polarity of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation affects the planning and execution of movement sequences.

Noninvasive brain stimulation of the primary motor cortex has been shown to alter therapeutic outcomes in stroke and other neurological conditions, but the precise mechanisms remain poorly understood. Determining the impact of such neurostimulation on the neural processing supporting motor control is a critical step toward further harnessing its therapeutic potential in multiple neurological conditions affecting the motor system. Herein, we leverage the excellent spatio-temporal precision of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) imaging to identify the spectral, spatial, and temporal effects of high-d

MEG Analysis of Cortical Activity and Network Topology During the Interictal Period of Migraine Without Aura.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is the most common primary headache disorder encountered in clinical practice and is associated with a significantly reduced quality of life. Despite abundant research, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms behind migraine development remain unclear. Literature reviews indicate that most studies utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG), often yielding inconsistent results. In contrast magnetoencephalography (MEG) offers superior temporal and spatial resolution, making it better suited for capturing the neural dynamics un…

Differential resting-state MEG microstate patterns in migraineurs: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) microstates offer distinct and complementary insights into brain activity compared to electroencephalography microstates, but their role in migraine remains incompletely understood. This study used optically pumped magnetometer MEG (OPM-MEG) to compare resting-state microstate patterns between migraineurs and healthy controls and to evaluate their correlations with clinical characteristics. METHODS: Resting-state OPM-MEG data were collected in this cross-sectional study. Parameters of six MEG microstate classes (Ms1-Ms6) were calculated and compared be…

The significance of multimodality approach in the management of non-lesional drug-resistant focal parietal lobe epilepsies.

Due to extensive connectivity of the parietal lobe, non-lesional drug-resistant (DRE) parietal lobe epilepsies (PLEs) are difficult to localize and often imitate other epilepsies. Therefore, patients with PLEs have low rates of seizure freedom following epilepsy surgery. Previous studies have highlighted the need to combine EEG and semiology for more accurate localization of PLEs. As sophisticated tools for localization become more available, the use of multiple different neuroimaging and neurophysiologic diagnostic tests may more readily identify PLE. We hereby report a unique case of a compl

Tracking cortical entrainment to stages of optic-flow processing.

In human visual processing, information from the visual field passes through numerous transformations before perceptual attributes such as motion are derived. Determining the sequence of transforms involved in the perception of visual motion has been an active field since the 1940s. One plausible family of models are the spatiotemporal energy models, based on computations of motion energy computed from the spatiotemporal features the visual field. One of the most venerated is that of Heeger (1988), which hypotheses that motion is estimated by matching the predicted spatiotemporal energy in fre

Covariation Between Brain Function (MEG) and Structure (DTI) Differentiates Adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder from Typically Developing Controls.

The behavioral, cognitive, and sensory difficulties experienced by individuals exposed to alcohol prenatally currently fail to provide early identification for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Attempting to advance this pursuit through a multivariate analysis, we collected magnetoencephalography (MEG) data during auditory, somatosensory, visual paradigms, DTI, and behavior in adolescents ages 12-21 years (FASD: N = 13; HC: N = 20). We assessed the relationship between brain function (MEG) and structure (fractional anisotropy (FA)) utilizing joint independent component analysis (jICA), a…

The neurocognitive basis of knowledge about object identity and events: dissociations reflect opposing effects of semantic coherence and control.

Semantic memory encompasses knowledge of specific objects and their diverse associations, but the mechanisms that allow us to retrieve aspects of knowledge required for a given task are poorly understood. The dual hub theory suggests that separate semantic stores represent knowledge of (i) taxonomic categories (in the anterior temporal lobes, ATL) and (ii) thematic associations (in angular gyrus, AG or posterior middle temporal gyrus, pMTG). Alternatively, the controlled semantic cognition (CSC) framework suggests that semantic processing emerges from the flexible interaction of heteromodal se

Magnetoencephalographic Correlates of Suicidal Ideation in Major Depression.

BACKGROUND: Defining the neurobiological underpinnings of suicidal ideation (SI) is crucial to improving our understanding of suicide. This study used magnetoencephalographic gamma power as a surrogate marker for population-level excitation-inhibition balance to explore the underlying neurobiology of SI and depression. In addition, effects of pharmacological intervention with ketamine, which has been shown to rapidly reduce SI and depression, were assessed. METHODS: Data were obtained from 29 drug-free patients with major depressive disorder who participated in an experiment comparing subanes

Abnormal frontal generator during auditory sensory gating in panic disorder: An MEG study.

Patients with panic disorder (PD) exhibit abnormalities in early-stage information processing, even for the nonthreatening stimuli. A previous event-related potential study reported that PD patients show a deficit in sensory gating (SG), a protective mechanism of the brain to filter out irrelevant sensory inputs. However, there is no clear understanding about the neural correlates of SG deficits in PD. Moreover, whether SG deficits, if any, are associated with clinical manifestations remain unknown. In this study, 18 patients with PD and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were recruit

Occipital Alpha and Gamma Oscillations Support Complementary Mechanisms for Processing Stimulus Value Associations.

Selective attention is reflected neurally in changes in the power of posterior neural oscillations in the alpha (8-12 Hz) and gamma (40-100 Hz) bands. Although a neural mechanism that allows relevant information to be selectively processed has its advantages, it may lead to lucrative or dangerous information going unnoticed. Neural systems are also in place for processing rewarding and punishing information. Here, we examine the interaction between selective attention (left vs. right) and stimulus's learned value associations (neutral, punished, or rewarded) and how they compete for control of

Sex Differences in the Neuromagnetic Cortical Response to Biological Motion.

Body motion is a rich source of information for social interaction, and visual biological motion processing may be considered as a hallmark of social cognition. It is unclear, however, whether the social brain is sex specific. Here we assess sex impact on the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) cortical response to point-light human locomotion. Sex differences in the cortical MEG response to biological motion occur mostly over the right brain hemisphere. At early latencies, females exhibit a greater activation than males over the right parietal, left temporal, and right temporal cortex, a core of th

Nonlinear coupling between occipital and motor cortex during motor imagery: a dynamic causal modeling study.

We demonstrate the capacity of dynamic causal modeling to characterize the nonlinear coupling among cortical sources that underlie time-frequency modulations in MEG data. Our experimental task involved the mental rotation of hand drawings that ten subjects used to decide if it was a right or left hand. Reaction times were shorter when the stimuli were presented with a small rotation angle (fast responses) compared to a large rotation angle (slow responses). The grand-averaged data showed that in both cases performance was accompanied by a marked increase in gamma activity in occipital areas an
