Odontogenic myxoma in the paediatric patient: a review of eight cases.

Paediatric odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare pathological condition in the oral and maxillofacial region. There has been much debate in the literature regarding the preferred method of treatment; however due to the rare nature of this disease, definitive algorithms of management are yet to be determined. A case series of eight paediatric patients with OM is presented. Six of the lesions were in the maxilla and two were mandibular lesions. The patients were aged between 2 and 18 years. Treatment ranged from excision and the application of Carnoy's solution to segmental resection and reconstruct

Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the temporomandibular joint from the cardia of the stomach: a case report.

A case is presented of a 67-year-old man with adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia that metastasised to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A carcinoma of the cardia metastatic to the TMJ has not previously been reported. The case is unusual in many respects. The condyle and disc were anteriorly displaced by the tumour, resulting in progressive mandibular deviation and crossbite. Radiographically, however, no destructive changes of the joint were observable. Tumour staging showed this lesion to be the only distant metastasis.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma of the mandible.

A telangiectatic variant of osteosarcoma of the mandible was seen in a 15-year-old Chinese girl. It was first diagnosed as an aneurysmal bone cyst both radiologically and pathologically. There were local recurrences despite repeated surgery, and subsequent response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy was poor. The patient died 16 months later with direct cerebral invasion, but no distant metastases. Diagnostic and clinicopathologic correlative aspects of this tumor variant are discussed, but more study of this tumor variant in the jaw is needed because this is probably the first case fully report

Primordial Odontogenic Tumor: A Review of the Literature and Report of Three New Patients.

The primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) is a rare mixed odontogenic tumor composed of mesenchymal cells, columnar odontogenic epithelium, and fibromyxoid stroma affecting the posterior mandible of children and adolescents. Herein, we report 3 patients with POT and the clinicopathological features of POT previously reported in the literature. A 12-year-old, 19-year-old, and 4-year-old patient presented an asymptomatic swelling in the posterior maxilla and posterior mandible. Imaging exams revealed radiolucent lesions associated with unerupted teeth. The lesions were surgically removed, and the h

Reconstruction of the bony chin using sagittal split osteotomies of the remaining mandible - A new technique for a special indication: Case report.

There are several indications for resecting the bony chin, such as squamous cell carcinoma, sarcoma, or benign tumors of the jaw such as ameloblastoma. Several techniques for reconstruction of the bony chin, such as the use of metal plates and also revascularized free bone grafts of the iliac crest, fibula, or scapula, are common. In the case of poor vascular supply, however, alternative techniques may be necessary. In this report, a new technique is described using pedicled bone flaps from both sagittally split mandibular stumps following chin resection. These flaps were pedicled on the myloh

[Maxillary and mandibular carcinogenesis: research and prospects].

Development and growth of odontogenic tumours depend on impairment of numerous genes and molecules. In recent years, most of the genes involved in dental development were identified. This produced a new basis for the study of oral pathology and maxillofacial carcinogenesis. A better understanding of these molecular phenomena should allow to better determine the evolution of such lesions. Research breakthroughs should facilitate the development of new molecular and genetic therapeutic perspectives.

Peripheral osteoma of the mandible mimicking a parotid mass.

We report the case of a peripheral osteoma mimicking a benign tumor in the left parotid gland of a 75-year-old woman. The clinical presentation of the painless mass on the lateral surface of the mandibular ascending ramus was suggestive of a benign parotid tumor such as a pleomorphic adenoma. It was diagnosed using computed tomography (CT) and further delineated using 3D spiral CT scanning. Mandibular osteoma should be considered in differential diagnosis of parotid masses, which can be revealed by conventional radiographs.

Radiological and clinical features of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse systematically the radiographic features of the calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (CEOT). METHOD: Clinical and radiological features of 67 cases of CEOT (four new and 63 from the literature) were analysed. RESULTS: There were 27 (41%) males and 39 (59%) females with a male-to-female ratio of 1 : 1.5. Age ranged from 13 - 77 years (mean 43.5 years), with a peak in the fourth and fifth decades. The mandible was involved in 74% of the cases and 69% of all lesions were in the posterior area. The mixed radiolucent-radiopaque pattern was the most frequent (65%), with

Acute myelofibrosis and multiple chloromas of the mandible and skin.

Acute myelofibrosis is a rare clinical entity characterized by severe marrow fibrosis and peripheral blood pancytopenia. It may be very closely related to and has been considered synonymous with megakaryocytic leukemia. Chloroma is also a rare entity composed of a localized collection of immature myeloid cells and is associated with a known or covert leukemia. A patient presenting with a rare combination of acute myelofibrosis, megakaryocytic leukemia and multiple chloromas of the mandible and skin, are described. Although presenting a diagnostic challenge, their combination in one patient aid

[Multiple site epidermoid cysts. Relation to basal cell naevomatosis and value of systematic pathological examination (author's transl)].

After removal of epidermoid cysts from one side of the mandibular region, further cysts developed on the contralateral side in two patients. No evidence of basal cell naevomatosis was detected. The fact that the lesions recurred even though good cicatrization had been obtained, has to be emphasized. The dental germs, voluntarily left in place, developed in a fairly normal manner. Systematic pathological examination of such lesions would appear to be a valid procedure.

Clear-cell ameloblastoma (clear-cell odontogenic carcinoma): report of a case.

Clear-cell ameloblastoma (clear-cell odontogenic carcinoma) is an uncommon odontogenic epithelial neoplasm. We report a case of a well-circumscribed 2 cm radiolucent lesion of the anterior mandible in a 30-year-old woman; this tumor was curetted. The first recurrence (at 5-year follow-up) was treated by aggressive curettage, and in the second recurrence a block resection was performed. However, 2 years after the resection was performed, the tumor recurred for a third time as an extraosseous gingival tumor, and 6 months later a recurrence was noted involving only alveolar mucosa.

[Recommendations from the group of bone tumors of the French Childhood Cancer Society and the French Sarcoma Group/Group for the Study of Bone Tumors].

Osteosarcomas of the mandible represent 3-8% of osteosarcomas. The rarity of this anatomic site and its specific treatment explain that only retrospective and a few prospective studies are available in literature. However, there is a consistent evidence on the natural history and treatment of these tumors, which clearly differentiates them from osteosarcomas of the long bones. The aim of this study was to draw up recommendations based on these data and on a retrospective study by the French Sarcoma Group (GSF-GETO). Osteosarcomas of the mandible should be centrally reviewed by an expert pathol

Metastatic neuroendocrine carcinomas to the head and neck: report of 4 cases and review of the literature.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) is a cancer arising from neuroendocrine cells, most commonly in the lungs. Rarely, NEC may metastasize to the head and neck. Here, we present 4 cases of metastatic NEC to the jaws and major salivary glands. Patients were 3 females and 1 male, ages ranging from 48 to 82 (mean 59). Three primaries were located in the lung and one in the breast. The parotid was the site of metastasis in 2 patients, with the jaws being involved in the other 2. Histologic and immunohistochemical examination revealed 2 well-differentiated NEC and 2 poorly differentiated NEC. Treatment

AIDS-related plasmablastic lymphomas of the oral cavity and jaws: a diagnostic dilemma.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are highly pleomorphic in their clinical, pathological, and biological features. Recent investigations have led to the identification of a particular type of AIDS-related non-Hodgkin's lymphomas presenting in the oral cavity and jaws. This novel category of AIDS-related non-Hodgkin's lymphomas derives from B-cells and has been defined as plasmablastic lymphoma on the basis of its morphological and immunophenotypic features. Clinically, AIDS-related plasmablastic lymphoma is generally limited to the oral cavity at the tim

[Resection of metastatic pulmonary lesion of osteosarcoma extended into the left atrium and ventricle via the pulmonary vein].

A 35-year-old woman had underwent an amputation of the right hemimandibula for an osteosarcoma. Twenty months after the operation, she was admitted to our hospital with complaints of syncope. On chest computed tomography and echocardiography, an atrial tumor was disclosed, which extended from the lesion of the left pulmonary lower lobe. This tumor intravascularly developed through the left inferior pulmonary vein. The intracardiac tumor was resected through left atriotomy under cardiopulmonary bypass, and immediately after weaning of bypass left lower lobe was resected. On pathological study t
