BACKGROUND: In order to assess safety of radioactive iodine administration in the treatment of thyrotoxicosis, we measured concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), its main inhibitor - TIMP-2 (tissue inhibitor of MMP-2), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), its main inhibitor - TIMP-1, adiponectin, as well as pro-inflammatory and procancerogenic thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1).

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR), a kind of central sleep apnea, is referred to as a poor prognostic factor in heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) play important roles in HFrEF patients and are markers of poor prognosis. However, there is no literature mentioning the changes in MMP and BNP in HFrEF patients with CSR.

The clinical course of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) is highly variable. Based on recent discoveries implicating angiogenic and inflammatory mechanisms, we hypothesized that serum biomarkers might reflect chronic or acute disease activity. BACKGROUND: Scarring of the liver is the result of prolonged exposure to exogenous or endogenous stimuli. At the onset of fibrosis, quiescent hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activate and transdifferentiate into matrix producing, myofibroblast-like cells.
AIM AND METHODS: To identify key players during early HSC activation, gene expression profiling was performed on primary mouse HSCs cultured for 4, 16 and 64 hours. Since valproic acid (VPA) can partly inhibit HSC activation, we included VPA-treated cells in the profiling experiments to facilitate this search.
