Facial reconstruction surgery 10 years after treatment for hemangiopericytoma: planning considerations and clinical outcomes.

This paper describes the surgical correction of ankylosis of the right temporomandibular joint and reconstruction of the middle and lower thirds of the right side of the face in a young man who had undergone treatment for hemangiopericytoma 10 years earlier, which led to serious functional, esthetic, and psychological problems and diminished his quality of life. The results of reconstruction surgery with alloplastic material (Medopor®) and surgical planning with fibrotic tissue due to radiation and the risk of osteoradionecrosis are discussed.

Peripheral osteoma of the maxillary sinus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Paranasal sinus osteomas are rare benign tumors. Although various theories such as trauma and infection have been proposed, it is difficult to establish the pathogenesis of osteoma. Osteomas may be detected with routine radiographic examination or the tumors may enlarge and cause symptoms. Osteomas most frequently occur in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses, and are rare in the maxillary sinus. CASE REPORT: In the present study, we report a case of an 18-year-old woman with a maxillary sinus osteoma. Radiographically, the tumor was characterized as a radiopaque, well-delimited lesion

Ganglioneuroblastic transformation in olfactory neuroblastoma.

Ganglioneuroblastic transformation in olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is an exceptionally rare phenomenon. We document the case of a patient with a poorly differentiated sinonasal malignancy that recurred following treatment with chemoradiotherapy and showed ganglioneuroblastic transformation. Although the index tumour showed neuroendocrine differentiation, it did not have the typical clinico-pathological features associated with ONB. We highlight the diagnostic difficulties in establishing an accurate diagnosis for undifferentiated sinonasal tumours and present evidence that the index tumour wa

Large central osteoma of the maxillary antrum.

The aim of this report is to describe a case presenting with complaints of orbital pain, altered facial sensation, nasal obstruction and unilateral spontaneous nose bleeding. Panoramic radiography and computerized tomography disclosed a large pedunculated heterogeneous mineral opacity with two impacted molar teeth invading the maxillary sinus. The patient was operated on under general anaesthesia. Microscopic examination of the surgical specimen revealed relatively dense, compact bone with sparse marrow tissue that was diagnosed as osteoma. Clinical characteristics and biological behaviour of

Blindness following medial maxillectomy.

Medial maxillectomy via lateral rhinotomy approach is used in the treatment for tumours affecting the lateral nasal wall. The most frequent complications are crusting, epicanthal scarring and epiphora. The authors report a rare case of blindness secondary to indirect optic neuropathy following medial maxillectomy undertaken to treat a malignant melanoma arising in the lateral nasal wall. It is important to keep in mind, the possibility of this rare complication, while patients are being counselled preoperatively for medial maxillectomy.

Vibrational mapping of sinonasal lesions by Fourier transform infrared imaging spectroscopy.

Fourier transform infrared imaging (FTIRI) is a powerful tool for analyzing biochemical changes in tumoral tissues. The head and neck region is characterized by a great variety of lesions, with different degrees of malignancy, which are often difficult to diagnose. Schneiderian papillomas are sinonasal benign neoplasms arising from the Schneiderian mucosa; they can evolve into malignant tumoral lesions (squamous cell carcinoma). In addition, they can sometimes be confused with the more common inflammatory polyps. Therefore, an early and definitive diagnosis of this pathology is mandatory. Prog

Metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a rare autopsy case without lung metastasis and a review.

A rare case of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of the maxillary sinus in a 67-year-old man is reported along with the findings at autopsy. A fine needle aspiration biopsy specimen revealed a characteristic tumour structure resembling primary HCC. At autopsy, metastatic lesions were recognized in the bilateral adrenals, spleen, sternum, vertebrae and lymph node at the lesser curvature of the stomach, but not in the lung, suggesting that the HCC had metastasized to the maxillary sinus via the plexus venous vertebralis and/or the azygos vein, or lymph duct. In our reviewed 29 cases of m

MLL rearranged acute lymphoblastic leukaemia presenting as a maxillary sinus mass with a discordant immunophenotypic profile from the bone marrow.

We describe an unusual case of pre-B lymphoblastic leukaemia presenting with a unilateral maxillary sinus mass in which biopsies of the primary mass and the bone marrow demonstrated conflicting immunophenotyping results. The extramedullary mass was consistent with a precursor B-cell malignancy, while the bone marrow was initially reported as a possible mature B-cell malignancy. The treatments for the two are fundamentally different, which necessitated a delay in the initiation of his chemotherapy until a clear diagnosis was made. Mixed lineage leukaemia gene rearrangement was confirmed by fluo

Primary mucosal melanoma of the sinonasal tract: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of thirty-two cases.

Sinonasal mucosal melanoma is a rare disease with poor survival. These tumors may have associated intraepithelial melanocytic proliferations, which are not extensively characterized. This retrospective analysis of 32 patients with sinonasal mucosal melanoma examined associated intraepithelial melanocytic proliferations in the context of diagnostic and prognostic features. Patient age ranged from 30 to 90 years (median 71) with a male to female ratio of approximately 3:2. Follow up for 31 patients ranged from 5 to 211 months (mean 42 months). Most patients died from melanoma-associated causes (

Maxillary Sinus Mass as First Presentation of Silent Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for more than 3% of all malignant diseases. Metastatic disease to the head and neck ranges from 15% to 30%. The 5-year survival rate after nephrectomy is 60% to 75%, but with multiorgan metastases the 5-year survival rate is significantly lower, 0% to 7%. The authors present the case of a patient with a progressive, painless right facial swelling over the maxillary area of 3-month's duration associated with a considerable decrease of right visual acuity. Cranial computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a maxillary sinus mass extending to the

[Ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus. Apropos of a case].

The ameloblastoma is benign odontogen tumour developed from epithelial remains of MALASSEZ. Because of the inclination to invade in an inexorable way all the surrounding tissues and of the faculty of recurrence after removal, one attributes him the qualifier of good-hearted tumour to local wickedness. The mandibulary localization is the most frequent. Toward the maxillary, it is mostly observed in the tuberosity region. The authors report in the work one case of ameloblastoma developed from the pericoronal cyst of an intrasinusal ectopic canine tooth.

[Treatment of advanced maxillary sinus squamous carcinoma: an analysis of 92 cases].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: There is no satisfactory treatment for advanced maxillary sinus squamous carcinoma. The treatment strategy is controversial. This study aimed to explore a rational treatment for advanced maxillary sinus squamous carcinoma. METHODS: Clinical data of 92 patients with stage T3-T4 maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma, treated in Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University from Jan.1978 to Dec.2001, were reviewed. Of the 92 patients, 21 received radiotherapy alone, 8 received surgery alone, 63 received multimodality therapy (51 received surgery combined with radiotherapy, an

Illosis of maxillary sinus in immunocompromised patient. Case report.

Aspergillosis, which was first discovered in late 19th century, is a relatively rare disease in the sinuses. In recent years, a number of invasive aspergillosis infections of the maxillary sinus in immunocompromised patients, as well as the non-invasive form of the disease, have been reported. They were caused by the materials used in endodontic treatment, like gutta-percha, antrolith and by foreign bodies. This paper reports a case of aspergillosis in the maxillary sinus of an immunocompromised patient. It is associated with a root fragment after a much earlier tooth extraction.
